Absolutely amazing that 100 odd rounds can be discharged at the car and that all 3 occupants survived.

u'd be surprised how many shots r fired in combat per death ... about 1,000 shots per fatality i read somewhere !!

This wasn't really much of a combat, though. 3 ducks in a car, completely immobilized. They must have been pulling some Matrix style moves to avoid that rain.

Both TRT and the PPP won with massive majorities ...

Sorry, but you're mistaken. The PPP did not win a majority of either seats in parliament or the popular vote, which is why it had to form a coalition government. They won more than the Democrats, but not a majority.

And in the party list vote, which is essentially a vote on which party you believe should run the country, the Democrats nearly tied PPP countrywide.

TRT won a massive majority in the 2005 election, right after the tsunami, when Thaksin demonstrated strong leadership and the economy was still strong.

In the 2006 election, boycotted by all the opposition parties, TRT won 460 out of 500 seats, but in many many districts the abstain vote was larger than the vote for the TRT candidate. Thaksin's support was clearly declining at that point.

That election was ruled unconstitutional and invalidated by the Constitutional Court because, among other instances of malfeasance on its part, the Election Commission denied many voters a secret ballot. You do accept that a secret ballot is an integral part of a free and fair election, don't you?

Democracy, in any case, is more than just elections. There is also respect for the law. The TRT and the PPP were dissolved because executives from both parties were caught on videotape bribing election officials or local officials to buy votes.

Reports from independent poll monitors have clearly indicated that some parties do a lot more vote buying than others. They are not all the same.

People on the red side of the divide feel cheated because the courts throw out the parties they vote in.

People on the yellow side of the divide feel cheated because the biggest vote buyers and most corrupt parties often win, and so they can't get a reasonably honest government that isn't stealing from them.

No government is completely clean. But not all governments are equally corrupt.

you'd be surprised how rarely combat involves stationary targets at point blank range, unlike this assassination attempt.

although to be fair they DID hit the guys they just didn't kill him. saw footage on the news where Sondhi had taken a bullet in the head... and survived... Thais are apparently quite eager to find out what kind of amulet he had so they can buy one for themselves, in hopes it will offer the same protection.

yeah but how many of those 100 shots were fired to stop the Sondhi's motor ? and as u say 3 guys were hit !!

also according to some reports the would be assassins were chased off by another car arriving on the scene before they could finish the job off !!

IN only heard about this 2 days ago so it is great to see some footage.

Fantastic that in the midst of serious drama some nerd or wanna be superhero can get involved and provide some respite to the worried residents. I read in one report that he distracted some of the red shirts long enough for someone to get in the gas truck and move it away. Even if not true or embelished, it is a good story. :D

Where was the Spiderman guy from the gas delivery company?!

The usual surreality in Thailand when it comes to high profile official investigations;

Army stays mum about bullet origin Bangkok Post 28/04/09

The army is back-pedalling on its remarks about bullets used in the shooting of media operator and political activist Sondhi Limthongkul.

Spokesman Sansern Kaewkumnerd yesterday said the army would not give any details on the bullets unless asked by police. "As the Royal Thai Police has not contacted the Royal Thai Army officially about bullet information, the army will not mention the details," he said.

Col Sansern insisted on not divulging information and dismissed army chief Anupong Paojinda's earlier confirmation that M16 bullets found at the scene of the shooting came from the 9th Infantry Division in Kanchanaburi province. He said Gen Anupong's comments might have been based on early reports and further supply of information might influence the investigation.

ie. the further supply of information might assist the investigation in determining who was involved!

A fairly light outcome it seems given that the sentences were suspended. Note the first half of the article relates to PAD civil cases.

Bangkok Post 20/05/09The Bangkok North Municipal Court yesterday sentenced four red shirts to three months in jail, suspended for one year, and fined them 5,000 baht each for causing a disturbance in the Din Daeng area during the Songkran riots. The court initially sentenced them to six months in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht each. But their confessions convinced the court to halve the sentences.

Pairote Ngamviset, Thongsuk Deesui, Koson Thirathammaporn and Chan Khuanmoon, of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship, were charged with breaching the Emergency Decree imposed in Bangkok and its surrounding areas on April 12. The four were accused of holding an illegal gathering of more than five people, blocking traffic on Vibhavadi Rangsit and Din Daeng roads, and causing a public disturbance in Din Daeng on April 13.

Kwanchai Sarakham, also known as Kwanchai Praipana, a community radio host and leader of the UDD supporters in Udon Thani, yesterday turned himself in to the police. Mr Kwanchai has been charged with setting up and operating a radio station without permission.

The Sondhi shooting case stills seems to be stuck in some internally confused and dysfunctional investigative quagmire.

However, I see that the defamation case against him was handed down today with a custodial whack;

Sondhi gets 2 years for defamation, BangkokPost.com 10/09/2009 at 12:36 PM

The Criminal Court sentenced media proprietor Sondhi Limthongkul to two years in jail after finding him guilty of defaming MR Pridiyathorn Devekula, a former deputy prime minister and finance minister. The defamation case was brought against Sondhi by MR Pridiyathorn. Also named as defendants were Thai Day Dot Com Co, the Manager Media Group and Khunthong Lorseriwanich, editor and publisher of the Phujadkarn daily.

According to the lawsuit, in a television programme aired on News1 ASTV on Jan 12, 2007 Mr Sondhi accused MR Pridiyathorn of allowing an old power clique to operate the two- and three-digit lottery, trying to protect former Revenue Department chief Sirote Sawasdipanich who failed to examine sales of Ample Rich shares to Singapore's Temasek Holdings, and allowing the transfer of Shin Corporation shares free of tax.

The court sentenced Sondhi to two years imprisonment, Thai Day Dot Com to a 200,000 baht fine, and Khunthong to a one-year suspended jail term and a fine of 30,000 baht. Sondhi said he would appeal the court verdict and fight his conviction all the way to the Supreme Court.
