Ryan Dunn, star of MTV TV and film franchise Jackass, was killed in a car crash early on Monday morning.

The 34-year-old and another passenger died at about 2.30am local time when the car they were travelling hit a tree and burst into flames in West Goshen, Pennsylvania, NBC Philadelphia reported.

Dunn was identified by his tattoos, according to a witness who was on the scene when the bodies were pulled from the wreckage.

The mother of Dunn's Jackass co-star Bam Margera reportedly called a local radio station to confirm that he was killed in a car accident.

Dunn was one of the stars of Jackass, the MTV show in which he and a group including Margera and Johnny Knoxville conducted crude, ridiculous and often dangerous pranks and stunts.

Jackass ran for three series on MTV from 2000, followed by three movies and several spin-off shows.

'Roi Et disease' cure costs locals

Published: 20/06/2011 at 12:00 AM

Newspaper section: News

ROI ET : The northeastern province of Roi Et is notorious for sparking the "vote-buying epidemic" in Isan but is unusually quiet in the run-up to the July 3 election.

Many voters in Ban Non in tambon Phon Muang of At Samat district are complaining they have not seen the regular election canvassers and campaign volunteers who usually descend on the village with cash and gifts.

Ban Non is the village where ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra held a so-called "resolving poverty reality show" in 2005.

Normally, elections in the village are celebrated as events when money flows in and voters collect generous "hand-outs" of several hundred baht from the various candidates.

Others make tens of thousands of baht from being hired by parties as election campaign staff. Somchai Kandi, a 48-year-old farmer-cum-driver, said he understood that usual vote-buying activities have all but vanished from his community during this election, largely because the Pheu Thai candidates hold high hopes for a landslide victory, something recent opinion polls confirm.

Conversely, their rivals from other parties might feel there is little chance of them winning a seat from the Pheu Thai candidates, Mr Somchai said, and therefore are not wasting their money.

Gen Kriangsak Chomanan, the 15th prime minister of Thailand, won a seat in 1979 in Roi Et, which was not even his hometown, and returned as prime minister because he was the first candidate to switch from buying votes with gifts to handing out cash, Mr Somchai said.

Ever since, vote buying with cash had spread to the entire Northeast and that was where the deprecating term "Roi Et disease" came from, he said. Unlike the previous general election four years ago, there is not even a small-sized poster of the candidates or the parties posted on the fences of the villagers' houses proclaiming their allegiances.

A few reminders of the July 3 election can be found in Ban Non _ the odd election campaign vehicle equipped with an audio player and speakers roams around, some of the usual large posters of the candidates and election campaign messages come on the radio and TV from time to time.

"In the past elections, a lot of canvassers came to us and paid money. From two to three parties, each voter could get almost a thousand baht in total," Mr Somchai said.

"But now, with only a couple of weeks before the election, not a single canvasser has shown up, nor any candidate," he complained.

For some reason I read this and just couldn't get this picture out of my head of all these people up in Roi Et walking around looking confused. "Hey, I thought democracy meant you get paid to vote."

Man robs bank to get medical care in jail

James-Verone.jpg

Some people who need medical care but can't afford it go to the emergency room. Others just hope they'll get better. James Richard Verone robbed a bank.

Earlier this month, Verone (pictured), a 59-year-old convenience store clerk, walked into a Gaston, N.C., bank and handed the cashier a note demanding $1 and medical attention. Then he waited calmly for police to show up.

He's now in jail and has an appointment with a doctor this week.

Verone's problems started when he lost the job he'd held for 17 years as a Coca Cola deliveryman, amid the economic downturn. He found new work driving a truck, but it didn't last. Eventually, he took a part-time position at the convenience store.

But Verone's body wasn't up to it. The bending and lifting made his back ache. He had problems with his left foot, making him limp. He also suffered from carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis.

Then he noticed a protrusion on his chest. "The pain was beyond the tolerance that I could accept," Verone told the Gaston Gazette. "I kind of hit a brick wall with everything."

Verone knew he needed help--and he didn't want to be a burden on his sister and brothers. He applied for food stamps, but they weren't enough either.

So he hatched a plan. On June 9, he woke up, showered, ironed his shirt. He mailed a letter to the Gazette, listing the return address as the Gaston County Jail.

"When you receive this a bank robbery will have been committed by me," Verone wrote in the letter. "This robbery is being committed by me for one dollar. I am of sound mind but not so much sound body."

Then Verone hailed a cab to take him to the RBC Bank. Inside, he handed the teller his $1 robbery demand.

"I didn't have any fears," said Verone. "I told the teller that I would sit over here and wait for police."

The teller was so frightened that she had to be taken to the hospital to be checked out. Verone, meanwhile, was taken to jail, just as he'd planned it.

Because he only asked for $1, Verone was charged with larceny, not bank robbery. But he said that if his punishment isn't severe enough, he plans to tell the judge that he'll do it again. His $100,000 bond has been reduced to $2,000, but he says he doesn't plan to pay it.

In jail, Verone said he skips dinner to avoid too much contact with the other inmates. He's already seen some nurses and is scheduled to see a doctor on Friday. He said he's hoping to receive back and foot surgery, and get the protrusion on his chest treated. Then he plans to spend a few years in jail, before getting out in time to collect Social Security and move to the beach.

Verone also presented the view that if the United States had a health-care system which offered people more government support, he wouldn't have had to make the choice he did.

"If you don't have your health you don't have anything," Verone said.

The Affordable Care Act, President Obama's health-care overhaul passed by Congress last year, was designed to make it easier for Americans in situations like Verone's to get health insurance. But most of its provisions don't go into effect until 2014.

As it is, Verone said he thinks he chose the best of a bunch of bad options. "I picked jail."

Colonel blames hit-and-run victim

Doctor jumped on to moving car, police told

Published: 22/06/2011 at 12:00 AM

Newspaper section: News

The army colonel accused of a hit-and-run incident which left a female doctor in a coma has told police that she injured herself by jumping on to his car as he drove away.

Col Saksit Phuklam, director of the administrative office of the Royal Thai Armed Forces' Comptroller General Department, attended Phaya Thai police station to give a preliminary statement about the incident, accompanied by officers from the Judge Advocate General's Department.

In his statement, Col Saksit denied driving into 34-year-old Maj Hathaiporn Imwitthaya, a doctor at Phra Mongkut Hospital in Ratchathewi.

Maj Hathaiporn sustained severe head injuries when she was reportedly struck by a Nissan car outside her home on Set Siri Road in Phaya Thai district on June 11.

But Col Saksit, 51, said the doctor was hurt after she jumped on to his car as he drove away following an argument over a parking space.

The colonel claimed that he and Maj Hathaiporn had argued over parking as his daughter had written "bad-mannered parking" in dust on the windscreen of the doctor's car.

He said he and his family were returning from dinner at a nearby restaurant when he found his car had been blocked in by Maj Hathaiporn's car.

He said they had argued over the parking space before Maj Hathaiporn moved her car, but when he was about to drive away, the doctor walked up to his vehicle and pounded on it.

Col Saksit said when he again went to drive away, the doctor climbed on to the car's bonnet and pulled a windscreen wiper off.

He said he abruptly drove backward, causing Maj Hathaiporn to fall down.

Col Saksit said he did not hit her with his car and had no intention of doing so.

However, Maj Hathaiporn's mother, Pannakorn Imwitthaya, insisted that the incident was a deliberate hit-and-run attack and said her daughter had not argued with Col Saksit.

After questioning, the colonel was released without charge. Pol Maj Gen Amnuay Nimmano, deputy chief of Metropolitan Police Bureau, and Pol Maj Gen Wichai Sangprapai, chief of Metropolitan Police Division 1, joined the questioning.

Pol Maj-Gen Amnuay said no charge was filed against Col Saksit as investigators have to examine additional evidence and interview witnesses to establish whether a crime had been committed.

He rejected accusations that the police were trying to stall under pressure from the army, saying they are instead trying to build a solid case.

But Pol Maj Gen Wichai said the colonel's statement is not consistent with preliminary evidence.

Pol Lt Gen Charamporn Suramanee, commander of the Forensic Science Office, said the seized car has been examined and valuable forensic evidence has been found.

"The evidence suggests the car hit the doctor," he said. "But we can't tell the speed of the car because the tyre tracks were not examined."

A colleague of Maj Hathaiporn, Thasanee Thongpan, said it was impossible for the doctor, who weighs almost 90kg, to jump on to the vehicle.

Army Commander Prayuth Chan-ocha yesterday promised to ensure justice for the doctor.

He also said the army has launched an investigation into the incident.

Maj Hathaiporn remains under close medical supervision at Phra Mongkut Hospital and has shown signs of improvement.

Dr Boonchote Kiangkittiwan, a Phra Mongkut Hospital neurologist, said the swelling on her brain had eased and there are no complications.

"Even though she remains unconscious, her body has some reactions. That's a good sign," he said.

Who says domestic helpers are overworked?

IT IS true that maids should not be treated differently from other workers, and they need rest ('Consider law to give maids a day off every week: Halimah'; Monday). But do they really need one weekly day off for that? Do they not rest in the course of their work every day?

My current maid has a day off once a month. Every time she comes back from her outings, she appears even more tired and listless, and needs to recuperate from her outing. When she is not around, both my husband and I, who are teachers, have to juggle with the care of our toddlers (two and three years old), besides catching up with whatever work we have not completed in the week.

Singaporeans work very long hours too and while we do not work officially on weekends, many of us catch up with work on weekday evenings and weekends.

My maid has more than enough time to rest daily, when the kids are napping or when my older one is in kindergarten. My maid is the one who goes to bed by nine every night and my husband and I are the ones who are still up way beyond nine to tuck in our children and catch up with school work.

Are maids really that overworked? The many maids congregating and chatting away happily at my condominium on weekdays present a different picture.

My previous maid met her boyfriend on her day off and even while we were at work. I have also heard of other maids doing part-time work on their days off.

The slew of social problems that will result from a weekly day off is unthinkable.

And think of those taking care of old and disabled people. It will not be easy for someone else to take over their duties when they take their day off.

I urge the Government to consider carefully the many factors at play and the consequences of legislating a day off for maids.

Yeah, screw those lazy maids! One day off per week? You give them that and the next thing you know they'll be asking for other rights and shit.

http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Story/STIStory_682454.html

BTW, I know this is going to sound racist but of like the last 30 or 40 news stories I've read about people being convicted of abusing domestic staff, they've all been Asian. And the head-abuser is always the woman. I'm talking about stuff like chaining the maid to the sink, beating them (sometimes to death), torture, etc.

Let him be outraged. The guy (Dunn) was an asshole. He was drunk and driving at over 100mph - the only good thing was he did not kill any other road users with his idiocy...

Obviously there's a lot of emotion when a friend dies but at the same time he was doing something amazingly stupid. Bam would have been better off expressing his grief over his friend dying and reminding people that this is the reason people shouldn't drink and drive.

Agree 100% Bill; as one of the replies to his tweet said; Bam would have been better off agreeing to do PSAs about the dangers of drink driving than venting at someone pointing out the repercussions of such irresponsible behaviour.

@Bill

@Stramash

I totally agree with you guys. This guy puts other sober folks at grave risk with this behavior. Ebert is getting heat for the verbiage of his statement. But after all what do you expect from the guy, he's a critic that critiques movies. Isn't that what critics do 'criticize', calling it as they see it...LOL

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) – Ryan Dunn, a co-star of the hit "Jackass" movies, had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit when his speeding Porsche careened off a highway, killing him and a passenger, police said Wednesday.

The sports car was traveling at speeds of up to 140 miles per hour when the crash occurred early Monday in West Goshen, a suburb of Philadelphia, police said.

Dunn's blood-alcohol reading was 0.196, according to a toxicology report released by authorities. The legal limit in Pennsylvania is 0.08.

It wasn't the first time the daredevil personality, 34, got behind the wheel after drinking, authorities said, noting he was cited for driving under the influence in 2005.

Woman walks through market holding severed head of man who tried to rape her

Crowds in a busy market fled in terror as a woman walked among them holding aloft the severed head of a man who had attacked her.

Covered in blood, she held the head high like a trophy, said police - her way of showing that she had delivered her own kind of justice to her attacker.

The gruesome scene was played out in Makkapurva village, 170 miles south east of the Indian city of Lucknow, where, last night, the woman was being held behind bars.

According to police officer Ram Bharose, the unnamed 35-year-old woman had sliced off the man's head with a sickle she had been using to cut grass near her village.

'She was getting grass for her cattle when the man came up from behind her and tried to sexually assault her,' said Mr Bharose.

'In a bid to save her dignity, she turned on him and during a struggle managed to chop off his head with the sickle.

'We have no doubts about her story because she had bite marks on her neck and cheek when the man tried to take advantage of her sexually.'

So determined was the woman to show that she had beaten off her attacker, who she claimed had been stalking her for three months, that she decided to take his head immediately to the local market.

'She put the head on parade,' said Mr Bharose. 'She walked right through all the crowds who were buying their vegetables, holding the head up high.

'All her clothes were covered in blood, but as far as she was concerned that didn't matter. She just wanted to make a point and she definitely succeeded in doing that.

'Everybody scattered. It was a very terrifying sight.' Mr Bharose said the woman had no regrets about her actions.

'We have to follow the letter of the law and although she says she acted in self defence she will probably be charged with culpable homicide,' said the police officer.

with the ******* knuckle trailers in NI making the headlines this week .... and knocking the fantastic Rory McIlroy of the front pages it's good to see some ppl have moved on beyond all the secterian bullshit !!!!

GAA star signs for Glasgow Rangers

He’s a young Catholic, pretty nifty with a Gaelic football — and on his way to Rangers.

Budding football star Aaron McGregor is set make a remarkable transition this week when he swaps his GAA jersey for the Glasgow side’s blue strip.

The 17-year-old has been snapped up by the Scottish giants, signing a two-year full-time professional contract.

And while excited to be joining the Ibrox club and the Scottish Premier League, young Aaron is disappointed to be leaving behind his squad place with Limavady Wolfhounds Gaelic Club, for whom he’s played for since boyhood. Indeed, his last competitive sporting action before joining Rangers was to set up a winning injury time goal for his elder brother Conor in the Wolfhounds’ most recent league match against Ogra Colmcille with a searing run and clever handpass. Such an action, of course, would see him penalised for handball in his new career.

For Aaron, the opportunity to make a full-time career in football is a dream come true.

“I was delighted when Rangers made an approach, it’s an opportunity to make a career as a full-time professional footballer,†he said.

“When you see Rangers’ facilities and their coaches, it’s a fantastic set-up. I’d been on trial with a few other teams — Bradford, Burnley and Aberdeen — but the Rangers set-up was the best.

“Bradford actually put a deal on the table, they offered a contract straight away. I was over three times with Burnley and they were in the process of bringing me over again when Rangers moved in between times. They moved very quickly once they had made their decision.â€

Aaron’s move to professional football has come as a result of a lot of hard work over the years with Limavady Youths, Newtown Youths, Foyle Harps and Ballymena United — and Limavady and Ballymena are both set to get a financial boost for the work they invested in his development.

“I’ve always wanted to be a professional footballer. It’s been hard at times to combine keeping up school work, with going for trials and training,†said Aaron.

“I’m really looking forward to training full-time. It’s going to be a big change leaving home and moving to a big city but I’m looking forward to that as well.â€

As for Gaelic football, the teenager is sad to leave his first love behind. “I’ll miss the Gaelic, of course. I wanted to play senior football for my club before I left and I’m glad I got the chance,†he added.

Aaron’s proud father Michael explained how the switch to Glasgow came about.

“It turns out Rangers had been watching him since he was 12, on and off. They actually made the approach to him around Christmas at Seaview after a game between Ballymena United reserves and Crusaders,†he said.

“We’d heard that they had looked at him at the Milk Cup, but hearing something and having a concrete offer are two different things.

“The Milk Cup is a great tournament. Aaron played in it at both junior and premier level. He actually captained his county one year and it was real opportunity for Aaron to impress scouts over the years. He also played in the Foyle Cup in Derry and scouts come and watch those tournaments.â€

Michael took every step to make sure his son had the best opportunity to make the most of his talent.

“When he was 13 there were enough men who told me Aaron would be good enough, and after that I decided that I would give him the best chance possible. I got Ollie Cummings to train him on the fitness aspect and I’d like to give a big thanks to Ollie for his help,†he said.

Aaron won’t be the only player with a GAA background in the Rangers reserve and Under-19 squads he’ll initially be joining.

“Rangers is full of lads who have played Gaelic: there are five in the squad that Aaron’s joining, three Dublin fellas and one from Omagh, and three or four of the Rangers scouts had Celtic tattoos on them,†said Michael.

“At this level it’s all about professionalism.â€

It’s a testament to how well things have moved on that Michael is able to say that the reaction to Aaron’s move has been universally positive.

“The reaction locally has been brilliant, from all sides of the community. We have had so many phone calls wishing him well.

“We had a going away party for Aaron at the weekend and the turnout was mixed right down the middle. Everybody is very proud of him,†he said.

Dodgy ******* jambo paedos !!!!

Craig Thomson, who plays for Hearts in the SPL, has been put on the sex offenders register for five years for preying on underage girls on the internet.

Thomson pleaded guilty to lewd, libidinous and indecent behaviour after engaging in sexual conversations with the girls, aged 12 and 14, by chatting with them over Facebook, email and webcams.

He was also fined £4,000 and successfully pleaded not guilty to a similar charge involving a third girl.

He avoided a prison sentence.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard that Thomson, 20, had contacted the first girl when she was 13 and when she turned 14 he told her he wanted to have sex with her and sent her a photograph of naked male private parts.

Thomson, who has been capped by Scotland at Under-21 level, knew the second girl since she was small and first got in touch with her online when she was 12.

Claire Bottomley, prosecuting, told Edinburgh Sheriff Court that "initially, their conversations were of a general nature," before he then repeatedly discussed showing his private parts to the girl.

"He discussed sexual acts, made inappropriate comments about her body and asked her to expose herself online," she added.

The girl then reported the conversations to her mother who got in touch with the police.

You'll love this Ciaran; after the nonce and then another player getting done for having cocaine in a club, Romanov issued this statment on the club website today; (I'm switching to Partick Thistle)

Hearts statement

24.06.2011

The Hearts Board of Directors has issued the following statement in relation to outside influences on players and the club.

"What's happening with the club today is not a new thing. For almost 7 years we have been fighting to shield the club from crooks, criminals and thieves. Many of the top players at the club have felt the bitter results of the swindles that have been carried out with them on their own skin. Skacel and Webster have returned to the club after realising where these 'football patriots' have led them.

"Over a short space of time 4 players at our club have been on the wrong end of the law. We note that 3 of them are represented by the same agent - Gary Mackay - who has been so vicious in his attacks against Mr Romanov.

"Taking into account the facts that have been omitted by the media it can be presumed that each of these cases is not a coincidence, but the result of targeted actions of a mafia that wants to manipulate the club and the results.

"Every year Hearts fights to be in the top 3, but even last season in the last 12 games of the season it was almost like someone replaced the team with a different one. Whose fault is that? Players? Manager's? Or it is mafia.

"Stealing players, bad games, problems with the law - all of that on top of record SFA fines. Problems are just shifted to another level.

"Mafia are dragging kids into the crime, in order to blackmail and profit on them. It is not possible to separate these people from pedophiles, and you don't need to do that. Each year we are forced to fight against these maniacs harder and harder. We are standing in their way not letting them manipulate the game of football in the way they want. As such they undermine us in every possible way they can.

"The task of the club is to tear these kids out of hands of criminals."

He has seriously and totally lost the plot. On the club site they have announced that 'following an investigation' Craig Thomson will remain at the club - they have said he has apologised and that his offences were down to naivete and 'possible outside influences'. WTF??? They have only ever been my second team, but I do feel this is the last straw for me...

17 year old Chinese girl to sell virginity for iPhone 4. Critics tell her to wait for upcoming iPhone 5 release.

299.jpg

A teenage Chinese girl has reportedly offered her virginity in exchange for an iPhone 4 according to a report from The Korea Herald.

The girl, who is not named in the article, took to Sina Weibo (the Chinese Twitter equivalent) to first lament that her father would not buy her the device before she later posted “a picture of herself along with other basic personal information saying she is willing to “sell” her virginity to anyone that buys her a iPhone 4”.

From the Herald article:

Her post has received negative feedback, pointing out that a phone is not worth what she giving in exchange. Others think that someone is using her account and pulling a malicious prank on the girl.

This story comes weeks after a 17-year-old Chinese boy sold his kidney in order to buy an iPad 2. Both sad tales demonstrate just how popular Apple, and its gadgets, are in China, so much so that the country is now the second biggest market on Apple’s app store.

Unlike the kidney-iPad news earlier in June – which proved to be genuine – it remains unclear whether the Weibo account and messages from the girl have been posted as a hoax.

Stories of voluntary organ donation and the selling of virginity are not uncommon in China, or other parts of the world, however these actions – in the pursuit of luxury items rather than more typical motivation such as debt repayment or paying college fees – will raise eyebrows in demonstrating the lengths that some in Asia, and China in particular, will go to for the latest must-have technology items.

As with the kidney-ipad 2 story, jokes have begun surfacing on Twitter suggesting she should hold out until the upcoming iPhone 5 is released.
