Which is your preferred city to host the advertising, opps, sports fest that is the Olympics and why?

I'd like to see Rio get it as Brazil would be a wonderful host and the Olympics have never been in South America.

Of course the idea of volleyball on Copacabana beach is very appealling :D, as is the potential of the marathon course passing thru the favelas with participants being chased by gun toting gang members.

Have to agree on Rio LG, especially as Africa hosts its first ever world cup finals next year.

But given the level of crime in Sout Africa, I would not be overly worried about the crime in Rio.

My only concern is the notoriety of the Brazilian police in conducting brutal pogroms against the perpetrators of crime, in particular the street children.

While I would welcome the IOC awarding the Olympics to Rio, I would also hope that human rights groups monitor any developments in Rio very very closely.

Rio sounds like an interesting choice, and I reckon it has to be ahead of places like Chicago, which, historically is not very high on the list of safe cities in the minds of most...but as you say, SA with the World Cup - I would never consider going there until I could be sure it was safe.

As for the Commonwealth Games in India...I am sure they will get the venues ready in time (sort of) but I doubt they can clean up the city in time... the filthiest place I have ever been.

In places lik SA and Brazil, human rights groups have little chance of preventing the authorities from acting on street crime or anything else in any way they see fit - so dont expect it to be humane and pleasant...

The Olympics is becoming/has become a farce...I used to enjoy some aspects of it, but nowadays I couldn't be bothered to watch it at all. Its sporting events wrapped up in a huge advertising and media machine with a gigantic over-the-top "ceremony" at each end...I am saddened by this because the work and effort of the athletes is overshadowed by all the hype and rubbish...

The athletes are the reason for the games - make them the centre and most important part again - then it will be worth watching - but for now it is one giant commercial - yuck!

Vientiane isn't even on the list???? outrageous.

The Lao Peoples Democractic Republic national Olympic Committee could not agree on submitting an agreed nomination between the choices of Vietiane and Pakse!

i hear Vang Vieng threw their hat in the ring at the 11th hour too. why, why WHY, Laos??? why can't you get it together and make a bid, you'd be a shoo in.

This Olympic bid thing has been on TV and radio in Denmark all day. :eh: All those celebrities, leaders, royals and sports stars make Copenhagen more exciting.

From CPH post

  Prostitutes prepare for Olympic delegates
Thursday, 01 October 2009 14:29

Sex workers are, like restaurant and hotels, anticipating loads of work during the IOC meeting

While restaurants and hotels are busy feeding and accommodating an influx of visitors in connection with the International Olympic Committee delegates, prostitutes are likewise rubbing their hands with excitement over the many potential customers.

Niracha Andersen from the Social Service Centre in Vesterbro told public broadcaster DR that the IOC meeting was bringing many new prostitutes to Copenhagen.
?They?re hoping to earn extra during the meeting,? she said.

Prostitutes are also frequenting many areas of the city not normally associated with prostitution, including the main entrance to Tivoli and around the Scala shopping centre.

A month ago, the centre-left parties in the City Council launched a campaign to prevent an increase in prostitution during two-week UN Climate Change Conference in the city this December.

Ninna Thomsen from the Socialist People?s Party explained the campaign was taking place because there was always a serious increase in prostitution during large conferences.

?It is degrading for the women who sell their bodies and also gives a negative image of what the climate delegates are up to when they will come to the Copenhagen conference,? she said.

I have inside information.....

I heard RIO is a lock.

Funny that, I could have sworn you wrote Chicago....

Update from BBC

Rio de Janeiro and Madrid are vying to be the host of the 2016 Olympic Games, after Chicago and Tokyo were eliminated by the International Olympic Committee.

I called it....

RIO

And your prize is that tonight you get to chat with scantily clad, sexy brazilian women in order to congratulate them on their win!

I've been to Rio three times already and have had my share of them. No need to chat... Their English isn't good enough and my Portuguese is non existent.
