BANGKOK, 12 January 2010 (NNT) – More than 500 Cambodian panhandlers in Thailand were arrested and deported back to their home country yesterday. Most of them are illegal immigrants.

On 11 January 2010, Deputy Prime Minister Major General Sanan Kajornprasart, as chair of the illegal migrant labor board, accompanied by Social Development and Human Security Minister Issara Somchai and Immigration Bureau Commander Police Lieutenant General Wuthi Liptapallop, gave a press conference about the arrest of 557 Cambodian beggars. He said the panhandlers, most of them were old people, were found in bustling areas of Bangkok such as the Ying-Charoen Market, Saphan Mai, Bang Kapi, Pratunam, sky train stations, as well as any tourist attractions in other provinces nationwide.

The alien beggars were apprehended from 8 to 10 January 2010.

Major General Sanan added that the arrested beggars had been smuggled into the Kingdom via northeastern and eastern border checkpoints such as Aranyaprathet in Sa Kaeo province.

The city administration is getting ready to tackle human-trafficking rackets and will move to make the issue part of the national agenda, deputy Bangkok governor Theerachon Manomaiphiboon said yesterday.

A Bangkok-wide survey will be conducted to estimate the number of beggars, both Thai and illegal immigrants, operating in the capital's 50 districts, he added.

Over the weekend the authorities arrested 557 foreign beggars, of whom 220 were men, charged them with illegal entry and are preparing to have them repatriated to Cambodia. The arrests were made jointly by the Social Development and Human Security Ministry and its newly established National Operation Centre on Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking.

Speaking at a press conference, Deputy Prime Minister Sanan Kachornprasart, who oversees the government's overall operations, said the arrests would kick-off measures against human traffickers. Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration hopes spearheading this project would help make it a role model for other provincial authorities.

Well I suppose for most of us, this will make the city a pleasanter place, but it's hard not to feel sorry for these people, and wonder what will become of them. I doubt either their gang bosses, or the Cambodian government will do anything for their welfare.

I was in Seam Reap at the weekend, and compared to the tourist areas of Bangkok, there were relatively few beggars. I guess that might be about to change.

I highly doubt that this will change anytime soon. This is a minor "bust," and these 500+ beggars will be replaced by new ones shortly. Sad but true.

Completely true as the smuggling, trafficking and exploitation of the Cambodian "beggars" is controlled mainly by Thais and Thai officials. Are they suddenly going to stop this profitable exploitation?

The principle of policing and eradicating Human Trafficking is NOT to target the victims - the Cambodian 'beggars' in this case - but to target those persons that conduct and profit from the human trafficking. Your not going to achieve that aim very well by arresting all the victims and engaging in a mass deportation.

Thus the newly established National Operation Centre on Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking has made itself look fairly silly IF it is meant to stop human trafficking!

Yet another brief Futile PR excercise which misses the point and will not change the status quo for those that control and profit from exploiting others.

AAaawwWW!!! SEE THAT?! Always happens... My Cambodian brothers & sisters always gettin' the bum-rap! THEY WERE FRAMED!!

I don't think anyone framed anyone. It's just a fact and it's in a news.

Cambodian baggers are just few percents of baggers in Thailand. Many of baggers in TH are Thai, I guess.

It has become *business* and it's sad but true.

Hmmm.... business huh? How about an AMERICAN beggar?? What a novel IDEA!!! As my manager, you'd be entitled to an unreasonable percentage of earnings... wha'dya think??

The "framing-thing" was a joke but what’s not a joke and is more of a blight on humanity are "businesses" like: attorneys, politicians, arms dealers, anyone working in commercialized religion.

Lots of ppl tend to frown on beggars, prostitutes, even drug dealers (and while these occupations may, for you & I, leave little to be desired) I “personally†believe them less toxic than the aforementioned occupations.

With these occupations (e.g. beggars, prostitutes, drug dealers) non-involvement is as easy as saying “No!†With true scumbags (e.g. attorneys, politicians, etc.) their duplicity reaches infinitely more ppl who don’t have the option to say “No!†So you tell me… which is worse? Just give the beggar 10 baht & forget about it… or don’t (give) & think about where these problems truly originate…

I think you miss my point.

I say *business* because those beggars have some kind of gang/mafia (or whatever you call it) behind them. It has been like this for ages.

I didn't say anything about who is worse who is better. ( again.)

When people are poor and their government doesn't give a ****, this kind of bloody thing happen.

BTW, do I know you?

I admit... today I AM feeling a little "OFF" my sanity mark... I apologize for thinking I DIDN'T need my meds today...

Also many from Laos and Myanmar, DANNO (and of course Thai, as I mentioned earlier). Sending those people back home don't solve the problem. Get the big guy behind the game and jail him for life, that will do.

Small children beg in the streets in Peru , working for parents who are often drinking at a bar waiting for their money. Sad !

Also in India..

I saw a documentary a month ago about Indian homeless kids.

Girls were forced to become prostitues and all that..

I just got tears in my eyes..

And then we still complain how bad we have in our lives..

Just doesnt feel fair for kids..

I once watched a guy begging outside a pub in Glasgow. Tattered clothes, unshaven and sitting with cup held out for money.

2 hours later we were walking further into town and saw the guy get into a new BMW!!

That could mean he has a sideline job, massage a rich Glasgowian in a new BMW for eample. :?:
