Six Arrested After Girl, 7, Is Gang-Raped in New Jersey

By AL BAKER and NATE SCHWEBER

Published: April 3, 2010

New Jersey officials announced on Saturday six arrests in connection with the gang rape of a 7-year-old girl who investigators believe was sold for sex by her 15-year-old stepsister at a party in a Trenton high-rise last weekend.

The developments followed an intense, weeklong inquiry into what occurred on March 28 in a 13th-floor apartment at the Rowan Towers complex on West State Street, near the State Capitol. Officials said they expected to make more arrests in the coming days.

Investigators arrested one man, Gregory Joseph Leary, 20, of Trenton, on Thursday and charged him with raping the 15-year-old girl, whom the authorities did not identify. Another man Tiemear Lewis, 19, of Trenton, was also charged in the case, officials said.

Joseph L. Bocchini Jr., the Mercer County prosecutor, said his office would likely seek to try at least one of three juveniles who were charged, ages 17, 14 and 13, in adult court.

But the 15-year-old girl may have been more than a victim, the authorities said.

She also was arrested this week on aggravated sexual assault and other charges “for her role in allowing her 7-year-old sister to be sexually assaulted,†the police said in a statement. The girl was remanded to the Mercer County Youth Detention Center.

Trenton officials said that the 15-year-old is accused of first having sex for money herself, then accepting cash to let men touch the 7-year-old. That touching then led to rape by multiple men, according to the investigation, which is continuing, officials said.

At a news conference at the city’s police headquarters on Saturday evening, Mayor Douglas H. Palmer of Trenton said: “Good people came forward to try and get justice for this 7-year-old angel, who was brutally gang-raped by pedophile animals. Everyone that was responsible is still not arrested. Police won’t rest until we get every one.â€

Officials said the two sisters went together to a party in the high-rise, where they were both assaulted.

The 7-year-old girl told the police she knew the party was trouble, but she went because she wanted to protect her sister, Mr. Palmer said. Both girls had been on the blotters of various child welfare services, he said.

The girls had been reported missing to the Trenton police at the time of the episode, Mr. Bocchini said.

Mr. Palmer said the 7-year-old met him at his office on Thursday, and he gave her a stuffed Easter bunny. But the family will soon be moved out of the area, he said, because “she will be stigmatized.â€

Mr. Palmer said the girl told him: “Everybody’s staring at me. They know it’s me.â€

This is the same world I was born into?????????????

Shirtless meat-heads, drunk beyond reasonable that have no tact or common sence. You are either in South Jersey shore or Sydney or Kao-sarn.

I'm sure it's not all Ausie heads. Just the most visible ones.

Indeed it was a somewhat dodgy thing to say. I find ozzies to be friendly and always up for a laugh, boozy, many times yes, but in BKK most blokes are. Never been to Oz so I can't say what they are like there but in BKK they arte like the rest, here for a party in the party capital of the world.

Oh Dear Mr digitalcat:

You seem to be very confused. The topic of this forum is not about drunken louts, It is much more serious that that.

It is about the raping of a underage teenage girl and the rape of a 7 year old child. Maybe you are not offended by that but find drunken louts offencive.

People the world over always play up when they go on holidays. It's not nice but it is a fact of life. Deal with it.

What is not a fact of life we should deal with is the way these 2 girls were treated, in particular the younger one. It is the sure sign of a very sick society. Also any one who glosses over a crime like this is also very sick.

I think your attempt at a cheap shot has left you bankrupt.

You do seem to have engaged your mouth without putting your brain in gear on this one Vlad.

This is far more than exposing your buttocks to a passing bus or putting traffic cones on top of a statue.

And this is not just rape, it is a sickening paedophile gang rape. The Gods only know what state this girl is in physically and mentally.

Since bullets in the head are not a legal option, I can only hope that these bastards get life without parole, and that they experience some of the same violence and sexual assault that the innocent 7 year old suffered.

Oh no I diverted from the topic. Yes I'm shoked and appaled that people can do such things! Let's all agree that raping children is horrible. Is there anything else left to say? Anyone for gang raping kids? no? Ok! On with it then.

You wanna be a hero? Make a difference in the world? Volunteer for a childrens organization. still not satisfied? Go to SEA and cut a childmolesters balls off. They're out and about, And more visible than you think.

Sitting there in your comfy chair and getting yourself all worked up accomplishes nothing. If this isn't the world you were born into change it. Luvlife So far all you've done is post irrating and crude comments on tf. I'll pass on the Lesson in trolling thank you. And as for the rest of you continue feeling shocked and appaled while your kids and best mates embarrass me as a white male everywhere I go in SEA.

Please try to get your point across clearly next time

This has gone a bit pear shaped, hasn't it?

I think we're all in agreement about the original post AND about badly behaved white (or any other colour) guys.

However, I think people are confused as to why the badly behaved white guys belongs in this thread. It's a question of levels of severity - whereas gang raping a child is appalling to us all, embarrassing drunks are... well, embarrassing and mildly irritating.

Perhaps the 'Australian' jibe got a few backs up too - there are many Aussies on here... and some Brits would like to know why THEY aren't included in the men behaving badly bit - we DO have a reputation to uphold.

But, as we're all basically in agreement, we can move on from this and maybe discuss other issues related to the original post...

For example, the quality of social services offered.... as I recall from the story, the NY authorities were aware there was danger to this child but were unable or unwilling to do anything to protect her.

Britain has a heartbreaking record of these cases wherein children have been murdered and even starved to death while under the 'care' of social workers.

Are more stringent rules required?

Who is REALLY to blame? The sister or the parents or the social service department?

Does this go back to the 'parenting licence' I once (half jokingly) suggested? Should ALL people be allowed to have kids?

Fair enough, i admit it was vague. Apologies.

A more underlying theme that I want to bring out is why even bother posting this ****? It really fucks up your day and there is little anyone can do about it. If some folks on here spent half the time doing something, (anything) positive for the world as they do wasting server space the world may be a better place.

Since the author is blog so horrified by the exploitation of women, let me draw this parallel - the girls that people in your alley pay money to sleep with really don't want to have that profession. Some do it out of simple economics, while others are forced into it. Yet, you don't seem so appalled by this because you or your friends (may) participate.

Now add 11 years to our victim, and trade her sister in law for a mama-san and all of a sudden it's not all that same same but different isn't it?

Keep on trolling.

You need to stop digging a hole to bury yourself...

The prostitute vs rape victim is a terrible analogy. Really bad - especially in Thailand. There is very little forced prostitution here. And economics isn't a valid reason either. A HUGE proportion of girls (and guys) working in this industry are here for purely monetary reasons - the latest phone, nice clothes, supporting babies etc.

Comparing that to a group of paedophiles gang-raping a pre-pubescent girl is extreme. I gave you an easy 'out' and a new topic to discuss - you should have taken it!

I know and thanks E_B very proper of you. Very British.

I like digging my own holes. Feel free to give me some of your righteous fury.

The topic is exploitation. Don't tell me the girls given the choice would take the same job having an alternative and that they don't get raped.

I certainly cant speak for how US social services are organised or how they work on child protection, but I do know from first hand experience the problems we have in the UK.

It is an area of social services in the UK which is grossly underfunded and often understaffed. The turnover of staff is also quite high due to the stresses involved with the job. There are far too many managerial level staff and way too much paperwork; a situation, which when combined with how overworked front line staff are, often leads to the tragic situations we see in the media.

For someone working in a priority child protection team (that is involving children deemed at 'high risk' or where there is some history of involvement with services) the recommended caseload is somewhere between 12 and 15 cases per worker. The reality of the situation is that these staff usually carry anything from 30 - 50 cases each, often more than 3 times the recommended level. No one can be expected to handle every case with the desired degree of care and competency when you are that overworked.

There has to be an increase, not only in funding, but in the level of wages offered. Cut the amount of useless managerial level staff who spend most of their time at committee meetings, and streamline paperwork, preferably to a National electronic recording system accessible by all Social Services departments in the country (at the moment each local authority have their own system - quite a few cases have slipped through the net by the family moving area and subsequent delays in transferring of information).

The perpetrators themselves are monitored stringently if and when they are returned to the community, but perhaps lifelong tagging would be an additional safety measure (though sure the civil rights groups would protest this)

Though I'm sure Iain is very right, the OP was more inclined, I think, to bring to attention that apparent fact that grown men, much like you and I, are capable of such abhorrent acts.

And he's right. Though I doubt that any punishment would be any kind of deterent to a pissed up teenager who just isn't thinking. Absolutely they should be punished to the maximum that the law allows, but I think, as I think the OP was alluding to, that society, it's values, morals; what it has become and what it seems to be becoming, needs to be seriously re-evaluated.

Not that I want to rain on your philosophical day out, but why? Society HAS changed, which is why the overwhelming majority of people find this sort of crime utterly abhorrent. Only a few centuries ago, this sort of action would have been commonplace.

Childhood is a relatively recent concept, and, if anything, the world (and society) is putting more stringent laws and checks in place to protect children. Child sex tourism is on the decrease, thanks to international cooperation, changes in the law (that means the perpetrator can be prosecuted in their own country for crimes committed abroad) and a huge increase in charities and NGOs working to eliminate child sex trade. Even child labour numbers are dropping.

Perhaps, if anything, we need to see these occasional horror stories to prevent complacency and to continually question whether the systems around us do enough, and what can be done to improve them (hence me bringing the funding/staffing question to the thread).

We DO live in a better world/society than existed even a few short decades ago. It is still far from perfect, but with the vast increases in information and knowledge being disseminated, we are far more aware of the imperfections than at any point in history and this is good, because it keeps the concept of protection of children (and thus innocence) very much in the public eye.

Not that I want to rain on your voice of experience so you know better so everyone has to listen to you **** you ******* retard.

I took pains to take into consideration what you said and made prety plain that I knew of what you spoke for ****'s sake.

I wasn't arguing in favour or against what you said. **** me. I was merely pointing out what the OP was bringning to our attention. Not anything about lack of funding for ex offender's monitoring and such.

Mate, for all your cracked up shite, you can be a real ******* tosser.

As for them, I'd glady put bullets through their brains in a heartbeat. But, there again, I'd gladly do that to a lot of people.
