My husband knows only ONE word in Thai and I didn?t teach him.

He said he knew the word from his first time visit Thailand. That word is ?GRA-THEEUY? ¡ÃÃà·Â

How he learnt it, up till now I have no idea.

LOL My imagination goes wild now

I would have thought a 'NON-thai speaker' would have trouble answering this question for obvious reasons

My first word ¢Ãâ·É as im pretty clumsy and keep on bumping into Thai people when walking through markets etc. . .

Besides learning the obligatory phrases such as "Khop khun krub" and "Sawasdee", the first actual word that was TAUGHT to me was the word "kaeng" (á¢ç§). This was with a group of Thai businessmen at a bar in the early 80's following dinner while parked at a cocktail lounge with a few hostess girls. And they were keen to point out to me that it had the same enriching versatility as in English. "Mike", one of them said, "you really should learn Thai! You have no idea how much fun you're missing." And the rest is history.

Teachers or tutors can basically teach you a few things. Grammar (structure, syntax), pronunciation (important), and many Thai words work the same as English, many don't, and you need to query your teacher as HOW you can use that word. For example, Thai has the equivalent to "By the way...", but it is used ONLY in writing, never in the spoken language. Vocabulary is your job. And learning the offensive (slang) words as a priority is dangerous. Maybe cute, but it ought to come later, not sooner.

:D The first Thai word I learned from a Thai person...

Well the first night I was in Pattaya. I was walking down the soi my hotel was on and saw a bar. So I thought I'd pop in and have a beer. I ordered a beer and had barely got my cigarette packet and lighter on the counter in front of me. When the girl I was talking to, turned to someone and called out - tee kee yah bouleh ! Seconds later an ashtray was produced. :D
