Richard Dawkins in his book The Selfish Gene introduced the idea that 'mating values' are inherently cylical. Now he was not really thinking about humans but species in general so we have to be careful applying these theories to human behaviour. However, lets have a go.

Now I realise that there are lots of guys on TF who say they want a girlfriend when they just want to shag everything in sight. And I know there are plenty of girls who say they want a boyfriend but really just want to shag anything in sight. (I also know there plenty of TFers who have no frigging idea of what they want.)

However lets assume that there really are some TFers out there who are genuinely looking for a partner. The mating game works like this. Females can be 'coy' or 'fast'; males can be 'faithful' or 'philanderer'. Coy females insist on a long courtship, whereas fast females do not; all females want a faithful relationship. Faithful males are willing, if necessary, to engage in a long courtship, and also care for the female. Philanderers are not prepared to engage in a long courtship, and are not prepared to care for the female.

The cycle works like this....

If females are coy, it pays males to be faithful.

If males are faithful, it pays females to be fast.

If females are fast, it pays males to philander.

If males philander, it pays females to be coy.

Now we are currently at the stage in the cycle that 'females are fast, it pays males to philander'. It follows therefore that 'if males philander, it pays females to be coy'. Do you think this is true?

It implies that for those girls 'really' looking for a boyfriend, they should go out with a guy a few times and for a few weeks before they shag him to see if he is genuinely interested in a serious relationship or not.

However, we may not respond the same way as say fruitflies. Alternative strategies could work such as 'If females are fast, it pays me to be even faster.' Grab the alpha male first before anyone else and then see if you can train him into faithfulness.

(Please note the underlying assumptions. Girls just looking for a shag clearly adopt different strategies.)

You clearly do not understand the game.

If you really understood the game you would realise it is not worth you asking the guys anything about strategy. You see males who play the game and think they understand it, think that it 'pays' to say you are 'faithful' even if you are a 'philanderer'.

That it pays to say you are 'faithful' is evident by the fact that the number 1. male on TF has a whole load of wishy washy gooey romantic stuff in his profile. Whether he happens to be a romantic gooey individual is, in fact imposssible to tell (and irrelevent) - it could just be his mating strategy.

All you really need to know is that it doesnt 'pay' females to ask males about strategy.

I have no idea where you read this stuff - Cosmo or the Prada book store - but it sounds like a pile of crap to me.

The disadvantages of going for the 'unsuccessful young male' are numerous. In particular.

1. The ratio of 'unsuccessful' young males becoming 'successful' is very low indeed. Colleen did indeed get very 'lucky' with Wayne but lets not pretend she can read the future.

2. When a 'unsuccessful' male turns into a 'successful' male his 'options' expand enormously. This leads Wayne ro replace 'Colleen' with 'gorgeous pouting nubile starbird'.

Most evidence would suggest that a more successful 'niche' strategy for a 'second rate' female is to go for a 'slightly used second or third hand' successful male who will normally be 'happy' to settle for anything that isnt 'too old and wrinkly' and that 'moves'.

Here your advice is a little more sound but not for the reasons you outline.

If you choose to steal a 'male' from another 'female' and succeed, it is a clear sign that he is a 'philanderer' rather than a 'faithful' male. As such the chances of him moving to another available female when he next hits the dance floor are extremely high. As such it is a mating strategy usually only persued by 'attractive' females with limited 'intelligence'.

Its amazing what you can learn from studying the mating habits of fruitflies.

Remember.... there are 3 stages.

For a female, finding a guy to impregnate her is not difficult - arguably, with sperm banks, it is not even strictly necessary in this day and age.

Finding a successful male prepared to look after and nurture her is far more difficult but starting with an unsuccessful young one and hoping he gets successful seems like a risky strategy.

I was thinking more of a 'Donald Trump' - either he is going to die on you or get bored (a well known philanderer) and leave you with part of his vast fortune.
