should I worry?

Took the bus back from the West End Festival tonight.

It went through Glasgow's Southern General Hospital; where there are quite a few cases (Scotland has had a lot of cases).

A couple got on at hospital (obviously just after visiting someone)

They sat in front of me; guy started reading hospital instructions on swine flu, then started sneezing, WITHOUT COVERING HIS F**KING MOUTH!!!

Have gargled with bleach, boiled my head and taken 4 paracetemol and a large bourbon...

I also walked round a sacred stone 3 times widdershins, licked a toad and invoked several demi-gods...

my preventions are complete...

(though I am sure Dr Mike would prescribe me another bourbon)

dear Rob;

site suggestion; next time you are adding emoticons, could we please have either a 'groan' icon, or a 'tumbleweed' icon?

Just a thought, and in no way a reflection on your competence in humour...

I am slightly unsure what the fuss is about swine flu. It is not particularly deadly, out of 1000 cases, 40 need hospital care and about 1 dies. That puts it on a par with normal flu which affects 'tens of millions' each year and kills a 'few hundred thousand' mostly young, old, weak immune systems. So far less than a hundred have died of swine flu.

I suspect because of the level of high alert there must be some reason for thinking this virus is particularly viral in that it might spread from a few thousand to tens of millions at an exponential rate. While it is a bad case of the flu though, I dont think there is any reason to think that the average person properly treated should find it anything but that.

BTW considering there are tens of millions of flu sufferers each year why did they stop flu vaccinations?

I just read this http://phuketwan.com/tourism/panic-needed-patong-joins-swine-flu-club-11216/

I live in Phuket and work in a nightclub. So closing the clubs for 5 days is a bit of a pain in the ass.... particularly as our soft-opening was scheduled for this 5 day period.

However, I want to write about me.

I think I have Swine Flu.

Seriously. On Friday one of my colleagues complained of a sore throat and exhaustion. The following day he was absent from work. At about 5pm, I started feeling the same symptoms.

Yesterday (Sunday; my day off) things were worse, so I decided to go to the hospital.

I told the doctor I believe I have Swine Flu, only to be told that Phuket doesn't have any Swine Flu.

"Oh.... that's not what BBC, Newspapers and Internet say."

"No... big boss of hoppital say Phuket no hab Pig Flu" (sorry for comic accent, just feeling grumpy)

I asked to get a test for H1N1. But the system for testing runs as follows...

1) Take a throat swab and a blood sample

2) Test the throat swab (3 days)

3) If it's positive, send the blood sample to be tested (in another province for 4-5 days)

4) When the resuts come back, the doctor can safely tell the patient what strain of flu he had 7-8 days previously!

Also I can't even get Tamiflu or Relenza unless I can prove I've been in contact with an H1N1 sufferer.... which is impossible because 'big boss hoppital say no hab in Phuket'!!!

That doesnt sound very smart if thats things are treated in Phuket ? why dont you print off all the articles about it, and take them with you ? possible get some in thai too if they exists.

Good thing is that its doesnt seem that dangerous but bad thing is that if Phuket health athorities dont take it seriously then they are just allowing it to spread.

An alternative could be to go to a BKK hospital where they might take it seriously, but then you have to travel, and thats really not what anybody wants so more can be infected.

Simply take along a copy of the Phuket Gazette, which has both this article below and the one above.

http://www.phuketgazette.net/news/

Ultimately there are something like 9 hospitals in Phuket so one is going to handle you. I think it is extremely unlikely you have swine flu but who knows. As far as I know it is very important to treat the symptoms early so simply find a hospital that will put you on the appropriate course of antibiotics rather than wait a week. It wont do you much harm certainly relative to an early death.

P.S. Arent all openings in Phuket soft at the moment?

English_Bob - how's the health ? have you been to another hospital to be checked or ?

The doctor said that there is no swing flu in Phuket, but English_Bob says he is pretty sure he has it after making out with a pig after training his staff one evening.

I have to respond for EB, because he is currently dealing with yellow card fever.
