My answer is, I would for a while but in the end I'll return to Phuket. It's not a place but it is what makes you feel like home. You paint yourself as a humanitarian in Afghanistan no matter what your military role is if you are helping out you are that unless your in combat. Man has many bad characteristics but you can embrace the one you choose and you care more about life then you speak and don't seem as bigoted as you type. One moment of seriousness. Was the life of Idi Amin as sacred as the life of Gandhi? Yes, I have a girl who is special to me. And, yes, I hold her life sacred. More and more as time goes by and I get to know her and grow closer to her. But I do not believe that life is sacred. I believe it is what you do with your life that makes it sacred or NOT sacred. Some lives are sacrilege. Some are evil. I don't mean evil in the strictly religious sense. I wouldn't give a damn for the average trailer park living, mayonnaise sam'wich eatin' redneck or the Ghetto Gangsta out there in middle America. These folks aren't worth a damn. I don't give a damn about the worthless Wall Street types whose only concern is the nest dollar they can pick up off the next run on the next ENRON. But there are millions of persons out there who are living sacred lives. Scattered across the planet. Some are religious. Some are not. Buddhists, Atheists, Hindus, Jainists, Nestorians, Coptics, Shi'a, Ismaili, Sunni, Presbyterian, Socialists, Capitalists, Anarchists, maybe even some communists. Millions of folks whose lives are worthy. I don't subscribe to a general amnesty to life. It is our actions that make us worthy not the mere fact that we breath. I'm over here in Afghanistan making some good dough. I"m not military and don't even carry a weapon. I took this job for a couple of reasons. I was already over here making comparable salary and benefits. But with this job, I get to do something more. 1. I get to know the real Afghanistan. I get to know it's people. 2. I get to directly assist the Afghan people. I'm helping them rebuild their infrastructure and their logistics programs. Some things I do have a direct effect and immediate impact. That's an awesome feeling for me. 20-30 years from now. If Afghanistan continues to grow and becomes a viable nation as it was becoming prior to the Soviets meddling. Some of this will still be here and I can say to my kids or Grandchildren, if I"m ever so fortunate, that I was a part of something bigger than myself. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that I'm some national savior for the Afghan people. I play my small part and hope that I help in some small way. It's a part that I enjoy. I've grown quite fond of Afghanistan and it's people. They're some great folks over here. Just like the rest of the planet. Ooh....and they're Muslim, too. OH GAWD! I must hate them and be afraid of them. Afterall, I'm a bigoted xenophobe. lol Now I know a couple of folks will come and **** on this and/or tell me that I'm full of ****.
