bottom line though is that if the hello boss crowd (or the hookers, or bad american, english and european pop music from the 70s) annoys you, then stay away from the areas that cater to sex tourists and sexpats and you'll have a better second trip to thailand. with or without mor lam.

sex tourists, on the other hand, have to put up with the "hey boss" as they know enough of them will buy cheap poorly made suits. the supply wouldn't last if there were no demand.

Fair enough, point taken. I had no idea that Phuket was sextourist heaven, know several people back home (among elderly couples) that goes to phuket often and they have always spoken very fond of it. Apparently i just hit the wrong side of the road.

But no worries, i wont come back - next time is north for me - if you already now have some advice where not to go, feel free to share ?

unfortunately, anywhere that there are lots of tourists, you will probably find girlie bars, freelancers and dodgy trade.

Even in chiang mai, the main street is lined with dozens of bars, all with same log garden furniture and 70s music, girls out front parroting "welcome hansum man!".

But, you shldnt be discouraged. 99.9% of the north is wonderful. In phuket, just avoid patong area. Most of the rest, and surround islands, are great. Avoid pattaya all together (its the most disgusting beach in thailand anyway) and avoid any place in thailand where you see packs of numb nut guys who are all viewed by the locals as the scum of the earth only worth skimming cash from.

as many others have already pointed out, it's only certain towns on the island that are overrun like that, particularly pathong (i haven't been to bang la). i liked kata beach quite a bit but it's a bit pricey. there are also out-of-the-way places to stay that aren't in any proper town at many different budget levels.

in general, there are very few towns you ought to avoid entirely if you wish to avoid touts and hookers. well, one primarily: Pattaya

as for things to actually see and do, many of the national parks are well worth checking out, and i hear there are many great dive sites (can't dive myself though as my sinuses are screwed up). i quite like ayuthaya too, but i have an inordinate fondness for old piles of rocks and it's a day trip from where i live.

are there an inordinate amount of indians in egypt? i would have expected more ... egyptians? if looking for indians i would expect bombay or delhi would be a more efficient choice than egypt.

no one "puts" them there, they choose to open businesses there because there are many dumb, rich farrangs who buy suits on vacation.

Hmm okay this wasnt meant 'racist' in any way,'indian' or 'pakistani' was just because thats what i thought they were, meaning not thai. I judged them by their accent.

The comparison to Egypt was the way they approach people, which is absolute hell to be in if you go into bazaars.

It wasnt just suits, it felt like it they owned 90% of the streetshops.

But fair enough, they are just trying to make a business & and i didnt stop them, i just find their style totally unacceptable & not very pleasent to be around.

Maybe its like that every tourist-hotspot, i dont know, im not an expert in Thailand, im a noob, this was just the first time i experienced this.

strange post. you could always go to a beach that *isn't* as touristy, but i suppose it would be harder to find hookers than phuket, huh? gotta take the good with the bad you know.

Well i had no clue was i was getting into when i went, first time there - and there wont be a second time, in fact i left it before planned. And if you think i travel to thailand for hookers, then think again idiot.

good theory

Funny. I was walking through "those areas" with my gf while in Koh Samui.

I've seen women with their children walking through "those areas" on Silom Road. I wonder if those women and their children were on the prowl for prostitutes. As a matter of fact, I see women and children accompanied by their husbands in those areas in Bangkok every time I go there.

I wonder if all of those children are looking for prostitutes as well. Starting young, I suppose. Little Blonde girls on Silom Road and along Sukhumvit getting their fill of prostitutes.

I've even seen older ladies in those areas. WOW! I guess they were all old lesbians looking for prostitutes as well.

******* EYE OPENING!

Thanks Zeus. You've enlightened us all.

I think someone is full of ****.

so it's my turn to be full of ****? why, you need a break? pretty clear you couldn't be bothered to read what i actually said. but hey, it's good to flail against a straw man isn't it? about the only time *you* ever look like you know what youre' talking about... unless the reader figures out your'e not actually responding to what was said. then you're f**ked. as usual.

NERD FIGHT!!!!

The bounty of TF. Nerd fights galore...and even better...we got overly sensitive politically correct nerd-herd fighters. Defenders of the Faith of Nothingness. Gotta love that.

calling someone a 'nerd' is a tacit admission that you're not smart enough to keep up. given the dire level of debate on this site, that's a pretty brave confession.

Pattaya will never be a destination that much ive learned by now. I just spoke to a friend who's parents got a house in Phuket, and they just have a totally different impression of Phuket, so unless they are pervs, then i might have missed something while being there. Might return one day when im wiser.

But next time i will avoid South, and start off in ChiangMai and take it from there.

Thanks.

I think he meant Auntie Esther (Anderson?).

Aunt Esther was Fred Sanford's nemesis on the show. and she was alive. Elizabeth was his dead ex wife whose name he called out every time he faked a heart attack...

for those of you who haven't seen the show... no really, trust me it's FUNNY.

lol just laugh say no and keep walking and make sure you never visit india

Sure - i think origin has been settled to Nepaleese, but origin really doesnt matter other than it was non-thai and non-western, and they were dead-annoying and trespassing my little thin red line.

Gladly i had a totally different positive experience away from all that, and im just too old for Patong Beach i guess.

the aussie-bar owner about the beer-mat incident :

http://phuketwan.com/tourism/aussie-bar-solves-beer-mat-heist-problem-11182/

But then regarding the problem in Phuket today he says:

Among the tourists the number one gripe, he says, is the tailors and touts.

''Thais will talk to you, but they won't grab you. The tailors stand there, blocking your way, and try to sell you a suit, or whatever.

''The Nepalese are more of a problem than anything. As a foreign tourist you get grabbed 30 or 40 times just walking down the road . . . plenty of time-share people, too, all just trying to make a quid.''

interesting couple of quotes from his "interview"

''We've got video cameras everywhere. If they don't believe us, we usually just show them the video.

''It's not a $5 thing. By the time I actually bring them here, it has probably cost me $100.

several times the lady arrested requested the video to be played as she claimed it would prove her story, was never provided !! and $100 is he having a laugh !!

''My staff went down the next day to the police station and tried to get her out, but by then they weren't going to let her out. The police weren't going to say what she actually did.

my understanding is that the only thing she was actually charged with was stealing the beer mat ... no resisting arrest, no verbally or pyhsically abusing the police or bar staff !!
