Apple urges Scotland to learn English

Apple has responded to Scottish criticism of its iPhone 4S Siri voice-activation service by suggesting that the people of Scotland try and learn English.

The new service, available only on the iPhone 4S, has difficultly picking up the guttural utterances of anyone living further north than Newcastle, causing concern for Scottish consumers.

An Apple spokesperson said, “Siri is an English-speaking service, and we would strongly recommend any Scottish iPhone 4S owners look to take a class or something.”

“There are a few good ‘Learn English’ apps in the App Store too, if they’re interested.”

“Before long they’ll be able to successfully shout at their phone on the bus like all the other iPhone 4S owners in the English speaking world.”

Siri not Scottish

Scottish consumers have reacted angrily to the announcement, explaining that a broad Scottish accent is one of the most easily understood dialects in the Western world.

Glasgow resident Simon McKeith said something about culture, history and there might have been the mention of pride in there, too, we think.

Technology analyst Will Matthews said that Apple could do much to mitigate the issues currently being experienced in Scotland simply by having Siri default to answers to the most common Scottish questions.

“You know, something like, Yes of course you can fry that, or The nearest pub is straight ahead.”

Worlds Population Estimated to reach 7 Billion..

Just How Big is 7 Billion?

(CNN) -- The global population is expected to reach 7 billion Monday -- just 12 years after hitting 6 billion -- and the milestone has many pondering the complex challenges associated with billions more people on Earth in the coming years.

Some are also pondering something else: Just how big is 7 billion really?

It's a number that's easy to underestimate.

On the surface, it doesn't look much different than 6 billion, either in written form or numeric form. There are nine zeros in 6,000,000,000, just like there are nine zeros in 7,000,000,000. But if you counted every number in between them, it would take more than 30 years. Yes, three decades.

Globe Trekking World Population

Meet the Worlds Biggest Family

Soon to be 7 billion people on earth

Why is global population spiking?

And when was the last time you used 7 billion in everyday life? Have you ever eaten 7 billion of something? Have you ever owned 7 billion of anything? Early this year, there were only 140 people in the world who were worth $7 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

"The number is just outside of our usual everyday scale of thinking," said Klaus Volpert, an associate professor of mathematics at Villanova University. "We count to 10 on our fingers and that's our scale, you know? Even counting to a million is already kind of outside of the everyday experience. And then once you go past a million, it becomes a blur."

Here are some different ways that might help you envision the enormousness of 7 billion:

-- Seven billion seconds ago, the year was 1789. That was the year George Washington was inaugurated as the first U.S. president and Congress met for the very first time.

-- If you took 7 billion steps along the Earth's equator -- at 2 feet per step -- you could walk around the world at least 106 times.

-- Suppose an average thimble holds 2 milliliters of water. Seven billion of those thimbles would fill at least five Olympic-sized swimming pools.

-- Let's say the average human is about 5 feet tall, accounting for children. If you stack those 7 billion people end to end, they would reach about 1/14th of the way to the sun -- or 27 times the distance to the moon, Volpert said.

-- Seven billion ants, at an average size of 3 milligrams each, would weigh at least 23 tons (46,297 pounds).

"Our mind just staggers," Volpert said, when thinking about how big 7 billion really is. He said there's a similar feeling when trying to grasp ultra-tiny measurements or something as vast as outer space.

"Every once in a while when we look up at the stars, we get a glimpse of the scale that's beyond the human scale, and it's fascinating and great," he said.

Population experts are hoping that more people begin to grasp the 7 billion concept soon, because the number has skyrocketed in recent years and the situation is becoming more urgent. (See populations country-by-country)

The world didn't reach 1 billion inhabitants until 1800, according to the Population Reference Bureau, and it reached 2 billion in 1930. But with advances in modern medicine, it took only 30 more years to reach 3 billion, 14 years to reach 4 billion, 13 years to reach 5 billion and 12 years to reach both 6 billion and 7 billion.

The U.N. has estimated a population of 9.3 billion by 2050, and there is expected to be more than 10 billion people on Earth by 2100.

"We're getting into more and more trouble the bigger the number gets," said John Bongaarts, vice president of the Population Council, an international nonprofit group. "Every billion people we add makes life more difficult for everybody that's already here."

Reformed Skinhead, Bryon Widner, Endures 25 Surgeries To Remove Racist Tattoos

By HELEN O'NEILL, Associated Press

Julie Widner was terrified – afraid her husband would do something reckless, even disfigure himself.

"We had come so far," she says. "We had left the movement, had created a good family life. We had so much to live for. I just thought there has to be someone out there who will help us."

After getting married in 2006, the couple, former pillars of the white power movement (she as a member of the National Alliance, he a founder of the Vinlanders gang of skinheads) had worked hard to put their racist past behind them. They had settled down and had a baby; her younger children had embraced him as a father.

And yet, the past was ever-present – tattooed in brutish symbols all over his body and face: a blood-soaked razor, swastikas, the letters "HATE" stamped across his knuckles.

Wherever he turned Widner was shunned – on job sites, in stores and restaurants. People saw a menacing thug, not a loving father. He felt like an utter failure.

First it was child-pornography sites. Now the hacker collective known as Anonymous is going after a Mexican drug cartel.

The Zetas are one of the biggest players in Mexico's drug war, which has resulted in about 40,000 deaths since 2006. Earlier this month, a YouTube video showed a man in a Guy Fawkes mask who claimed to speak for Anonymous warning the Zetas that the collective would reveal the names of people who had aided the cartel, including taxi drivers, police officers and journalists, if a kidnapped member of Anonymous weren't released.

BBC News reports that local authorities weren't able to authenticate the video, in which the claim was made that "we cannot defend ourselves with weapons, but we can with their cars, houses and bars" and that exposing Zetas is "not difficult ... we know who they are and where they are."

If the message is real, it means Anonymous is playing with fire. In September, the narcogang decapitated 39-year-old Marisol Macías Castañeda in the town of Nuevo Laredo for supposedly posting comments to social-networking sites under the name Laredo Girl. The sign next to her body (pictured above) read, "Nuevo Laredo en Vivo and social networking sites, I'm The Laredo Girl, and I'm here because of my reports, and yours."

That same month, two bodies were found hanging next to a sign that stated, "This is going to happen to all Internet snitches. Pay attention, I'm watching you."

The name of the supposedly kidnapped Anonymous member was not revealed. If the collective does reveal the identities of Zeta members, those members will likely be vulnerable to attacks from rival gangs.

Golden iPad With T-Rex Bone: Yours For £5m

gold_124616.jpg

The £5m device is being promoted by British luxury goods specialist Stuart Hughes. The iPad 2 is encrusted with 12.5-carat diamonds and has 53 separate gems forming the iconic Apple logo.

The back section has been formed in 24-carat gold and weighs two kilogrammes.

But the most expensive part is actually the main front frame which is made from the oldest rock the world has to offer - Ammolite.

Sourced from Canada, the stone is more than 75 million years old.

Just to cap off the unique design, part of a T-rex thigh bone dating back 65 million years is claimed to have been shaved into the stone.

The final touch is a single-cut 8.5-carat flawless diamond inlaid in platinum surrounded by 12 satellite gems.

Despite the hefty price tag, one of the devices is already said to have been sold to an anonymous buyer.

Stuart Hughes is renowned for creating "ultra-luxury" goods, including a £219,995 Macbook Air and a diamond and platinum iPhone costing £20,995.

It was claimed earlier this year he had built a super yacht encased in gold worth £3bn for an anonymous Malaysian businessman but doubts were later raised about the boat.

Kiwi woman kept as sex slave in Philippines

[h=2]Mary Jones was severely beaten when she tried to escape. Photo / Natalie Slade[/h]

A New Zealand woman has told how she was kidnapped, beaten and forced into prostitution after being duped by a Facebook invitation to join a martial arts school.

Mary Elizabeth Jones, 39, was held captive in a tiny, filthy room for five and a half months and forced to have sex with up to nine men a day, after being kidnapped in the Philippines.

The martial arts enthusiast's ordeal began when she answered a message from a top martial arts group, inviting her to a month's intense training in the country in October.

"They were meant to be world class and I thought this was a chance for me to learn from the best," said Ms Jones.

But after being picked up from Iloilo City's airport by the purported leader of the group, Ms Jones was robbed of her belongings and thrown into the bug-infested room.

She was visited by up to nine men a day and forced to have sex with them. Each paid 5000 pesos ($140).

"I felt utterly disgusted, and I was treated like a piece of meat," she said. "It was meant to be a trip of a lifetime but it has destroyed my whole life instead."

Ms Jones said her attempts to escape and fight back resulted in severe beatings, which caused her to lose several teeth.

And after months of torment and starvation, which left her too weak to stand, she was dragged from the room and dumped on the streets of Manila.

"I hate myself immensely and feel so dirty. I wish I could have just died in the Philippines rather than go on living like this," said Ms Jones, who is now recovering at a boarding house in Mangere.

Five months after being rescued, she wants to share her story to serve as a warning for others who "may be tempted" by similar invitations.

Ms Jones said the room where she was kept was full of bugs and insects and the food - which came once every two days - often contained "creepy crawlies".

"It was so bad, I doubt even dogs would have eaten it," she said.

"Even now, I still wake up shivering and can still smell the stench of the enclosed room I was kept in ..."

In the five months, she lost around 30kg, dropping from 90kg.

"I don't know whether it was because I grew too weak to continue servicing the men or they had found a replacement, but they just came, dragged me away, and I was dumped on the streets in the city," she said.

Ms Jones was taken in by a women's refuge centre and stayed at the Haven National Centre for Women before receiving help from the US Embassy to return to New Zealand.

The embassy confirmed that it had helped Ms Jones in the Philippines.

Immigration New Zealand's general manager (fraud and compliance), Peter Elms said Ms Jones was holding a British passport and the department helped with her re-entry into the country.

Ms Jones was born in the UK but moved to Auckland as a child and attended Avondale Intermediate and Avondale College.

She moved to the United States and worked in business management and computer technology in Alaska before her trip to the Philippines.

"Our role was to endorse her status as a New Zealand citizen in her British passport which entitles her to remain here indefinitely," Mr Elms said.

The latest Trafficking in Persons Report by the US Department of State lists the Philippines as a source country for human trafficking and a destination and transit destination for men, women and children who are subjected to sex trafficking and forced labour.

"Hundreds of victims are subjected to forced prostitution each day in well-known and highly visible business establishments that cater to both domestic and foreign demand for commercial sex acts," the report said.

"Child sex tourism remained a serious problem ... with sex tourists coming from Northeast Asia, Australia, Europe, North America and New Zealand to engage in the commercial sexual exploitation of children."

Philippines consul-general Emilie Shi said the sex trafficking problem in her country involved mainly "domestic people", and cases involving foreign nationals were "extremely rare".

"As with any society, there will always be a few scumbags who run illegal rings and try to make a profit at the expense of other human beings," Ms Shi said. "To be safe, it is advisable to check with the embassy here before going there for holiday or for business, if there are any doubts at all."

Lion Mutilates 42 Midgets in Cambodian Ring-Fight

You can't make this stuff up...only I can.

lion22.jpg

"Spectators cheered as entire Cambodian Midget Fighting League squared off against African Lion

Tickets had been sold-out three weeks before the much anticipated fight, which took place in the city of Kâmpóng Chhnãng.

The fight was slated when an angry fan contested Yang Sihamoni, President of the CMFL, claiming that one lion could defeat his entire league of 42 fighters.

Sihamoni takes great pride in the league he helped create, as was conveyed in his recent advertising campaign for the CMFL that stated his midgets will "... take on anything; man, beast, or machine."

This campaign is believed to be what sparked the undisclosed fan to challenge the entire league to fight a lion; a challenge that Sihamoni readily accepted.

An African Lion (Panthera Leo) was shipped to centrally located Kâmpóng Chhnãng especially for the event, which took place last Saturday, April 30, 2005 in the city’s coliseum.

The Cambodian Government allowed the fight to take place, under the condition that they receive a 50% commission on each ticket sold, and that no cameras would be allowed in the arena.

The fight was called in only 12 minutes, after which 28 fighters were declared dead, while the other 14 suffered severe injuries including broken bones and lost limbs, rendering them unable to fight back.

Sihamoni was quoted before the fight stating that he felt since his fighters out-numbered the lion 42 to 1, that they “… could out-wit and out-muscle [it].”

Unfortunately, he was wrong."

[h=1]Fears for Italian economy as Berlusconi faces cash demand from bunga bunga organiser[/h]

berlusoni-bunga-bunga.jpgThere are renewed fears for the Italian economy this morning after it was reported that prime minister Silvio Berlusconi was was asked for cash payment in advance to organise his latest bunga bunga party.

As borrowing rates for the Italian government hit a euro-era high, party organisers have said they will need to see the cash first before arranging further sex parties for the country’s leader.

As one organiser told us, “The 10-year yield of Italian bonds has risen to 6.64%, and in an economic climate such as this we simply need to pay our ‘performers’ in advance.”

“We are not prepared to offer the favourable credit terms that were available last year. It’s nothing personal, and we’re happy to organise more parties for Mr Berlusconi, but we need paying up front. It’s just business.”

“Even party organisers are not immune to economic uncertainty.”

[h=4]Italian rates rise[/h]Concerns for Italy are over-shadowing developments in Greece, where the prime minister George Papandreou is expected to step down after suggesting the countries economic future should be decided by the people who have spent the last two months throwing bottles of piss at the Acropolis.

Analyst Georgios Levendakis told us, “Angry people with no money don’t tend to make great economic decisions, it’s just a shame the prime minister didn’t realise this.”

Meanwhile back in Italy, it is hoped the bunga bunga party stand-off will soon come to a satisfactory close after Berlusconi told advisers he’s “good for it”.
