admin
Cambodia sets age limit for foreign husbandsPosted Wed Mar 16, 2011 11:21pm AEDT Male foreigners over the age of 50 have been outlawed from marrying Cambodian women in the country under new rules designed to crack down on sham marriages and human trafficking, the government said. Foreigners who earn less than $2,550 per month are also barred from wedding local women, foreign ministry spokesman Koy Kuong said, but the restrictions do not apply to weddings taking place overseas. Marriages between old men and young women are "inappropriate", Mr Kuong said, and foreign men who wish to marry nationals must earn a high salary to ensure that "Cambodian women can live a decent life". "We are preventing fake marriages and human trafficking," he said, adding that the government was aware of cases, documented by rights groups, where Cambodian women were sent into prostitution or "used as slaves" in their husband's home country. The Cambodian foreign ministry has sent a diplomatic note to all the embassies and consulates in the country informing them of the new regulations, which came into effect on March 1. Kek Galabru, president of local human rights group Licadho, praised the government's intention to protect Cambodian brides. But she said the new guidelines "go against Cambodian marriage law and international law" - specifically the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. "This is discrimination against women because they will not be allowed to marry men who are over 50... while Cambodian men can marry any foreign woman they choose," she said. Cambodia imposed a temporary ban on foreign marriages in 2008 to prevent human trafficking, amid concern over a sharp rise in the number of brokered unions involving South Korean men and poor Cambodian women. That ban followed an International Organisation for Migration report that said many Cambodian brides suffered abuse after moving to South Korea in marriages hastily arranged by brokers who made large profits. The restriction was lifted about eight months later after new laws were introduced to prevent women becoming mail-order brides. - AFP http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/03/16/3166019.htm

admin
Rock it she did! An amazing voice she has!!My arm hairs stand up it made!!! I was having a bit of a conversation with simply_oriental about this girl in simply_oriental's blog but maybe it might get more exposure here . . . what I was trying to get at is that this girl chose a farang song that had a huge vocal range to it. But I've seen a bunch of clips from Thailand's Got Talent and most people just start applauding at the first few notes of the song even before they hear the singer open their mouth which, unfortunately, probably means the person who sings the most popular songs will win over the most gifted singer but . . . that's a whole other issue. I don't remember any Thai songs that exercise the kind of vocal range as this girl displayed. I was even comparing it to Paul Potts who won Britain's Got Talent singing opera. Are there any Thai songs that express emotion so rawly as songs like this? I know Thai songs rely more on the words but are there any Thai songs that have this kind of range? With all due respect to Bill. Not to debunk your point bro but, I believe there are plenty of classic Thai songs that have emotion and thai style tonal range. They are.. lets face it, two different styles or forms of music. IMOH if a westerner and a thai person listened to the same song each would get a different emotional response or feeling out of the listening experience. The example I will use is the year that Kevin Skinner a.k.a. the chicken catcher won Americas got talent, Pandorea(Nikki) might remember this but he won it by singing country and western songs. Country music in my oppinion is a style of music that rely's mostly on a listeners emotional perspective. I have had friends say why do you like that country song bro and yes I do occasionally listen to a country song or two. True the melodies may sound similar but when you really listen to the words thats a whole another different reaction. The song takes on meaning. The listener may say to themselves hey man I'm "feeling it" I've been there done that and wow so have you I can relate. Which in my opinion is the purpose of music to conjure emotion for the person to feel it. With all that said: I could be wrong on this but maybe because "the gots talent" series has a western theme to is maybe why the musical artist feel they should choose a western song. I am sure it has some influence on the artist musical choices. Maybe there are singers with Thai songs but do not make the prescreening I'm not sure on that one but. I think they should mix it up a bit and choose singers with Thai songs. It would give the feel to the show of the world region that it is in. It is however the first year running of the show, people may write into the show and maybe this will change. O.K. end of my rant..LOL ..so who do you guys think has a good chance to win the whole thing. The trans gender girl might have a good running to win it. She is very personable and has a very nice voice. heres the link to simply_Orientals blog post that Bill mentioned Thailand we got some talent too! btw I suggest you subscribe to simply's blog posts they are usually very well done

IMOH if a westerner and a thai person listened to the same song each would get a different emotional response or feeling out of the listening experience. What do you mean they have a "thai style tonal range"? I'm unclear on what that means. I would love to hear some Thai music that had some real vocal range. All I'm really saying is that I've seen probably close to a dozen clips from Thailand's Got Talent from people who made it to the next round. In many/most of them the crowd start applauding before the singer has opened their mouth because they're singing a popular Thai song. The song itself may be rather musically unchallenging compared to the one the 15 year old girl sang but the crowd goes crazy. I would be disappointed if someone of limited skills won over someone like this girl simply because they pandered to the crowd rather than displaying their best abilities. Isn't that the whole point of the show?

I would be disappointed if someone of limited skills won over someone like this girl simply because they pandered to the crowd rather than displaying their best abilities. Isn't that the whole point of the show? just to clarify of what I meant by style, it is the type of music or style of music, and tonal or vocal range, the breadth of pitches or the octaves the singer Carry's their voice. Sorry I agree I wasn't too clear with that statement.. Ya know, now that I re read your post I believe I must have misinterpreted what you said earlier. I think get it now.. probably means the person who sings the most popular songs will win over the most gifted singer but . . . that's a whole other issue. popular meaning Thai songs not the other way around western songs. Right? All I was trying to say earlier is that my western ear or taste of music may be a bit different than that of a Thai ear. I would love to hear from a Thai member on here that could give some insight on this. But yea I do agree it is all about talent not popularity unlike this shows sister show American Idol where someone with a kewl hairdo wins over the crowd. Another thing I forgot to mention on my last post and I am curious about. Is... I wonder how much professional vocal coaching Bell Nuntita or the 15 year old has both had they probably achieved their great voices without the help of little or no coaching. So who do you have your money on winning this thing.

GoodKarma
Bill you know I have been catching a lot of this on Youtube I missed the guy that could spin the top on his head. You are right they are letting a lot of bad acts get through they let the hand puppet dude get through. I did like the sparkly poi guy he was actually pretty good and I know the judges felt bad buzzing the little 4 year old girl but they had to do it... The judges buzzed this guy..the one handed guitarist..I thought he was pretty good.. he had the whole house in tears.... I really felt sorry for this guy..but he had me rotf

koolbreez
The judges all buzzed the one handed guitarist, then voted "yes" for him. That by itself is a WTF, but even more amazing if you look, he is flipping everyone off with his left hand in his lap.....lololol.
Teila
The auditions seem to be really quite long compared to Britain's Got Talent & America's Got Talent (the only others i've seen) So maybe they buzzed him to signal the end of his audition? I remember I was shopping in MBK with a friend & while she was looking at something I was watching Thailand's Got Talent on the Nail Salon's mini TV. It was the "& i'm telling you" chick.... & bloody hell!!! after 4mins I was like...Ok we can all see she can sing - wanna see the judges comments now. I'm sure the British & American auditions are only up to 2mins.
admin
Chavez says capitalism may have ended life on Mars(Reuters) - Capitalism may be to blame for the lack of life on the planet Mars, Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavez said on Tuesday. "I have always said, heard, that it would not be strange that there had been civilization on Mars, but maybe capitalism arrived there, imperialism arrived and finished off the planet," Chavez said in speech to mark World Water Day. Chavez, who also holds capitalism responsible for many of the world's problems, warned that water supplies on Earth were drying up. "Careful! Here on planet Earth where hundreds of years ago or less there were great forests, now there are deserts. Where there were rivers, there are deserts," Chavez said, sipping from a glass of water. He added that the West's attacks on Libya were about water and oil reserves. Earlier this month, the U.S. National Research Council recommended that NASA's top priority should be a robot to help determine whether Mars ever supported life and offer insight on its geological and climatic history. It would also be the first step in an effort to get samples from Mars back to Earth. A NASA team recently tested a space suit in a setting with extreme conditions akin to some of those found on Mars -- an Argentine base in Antarctica -- for possible use on a visit to the Red Planet. admin
Thailand crash airline 'faked papers to cover up for pilot who had worked illegal number of hours'THE owners of a plane that crashed in Thailand killing 90 people, tried to fake papers to cover for an Âoverworked pilot, an inquest was told yesterday. Eight Britons were among the dead when the One-Two-Go flight crash-landed at Phuket airport in 2007. Bonnie Rind, whose brother died, told the Lincoln hearing she found emails from bosses plotting to change records to hide the illegal number of hours the pilot had worked.
