the number 1 beer is in China (snow) - this snow's for you!!

http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2009/04/03/chinese-brand-claims-top-spot-on-list-of-worlds-best-selling-beers.html

Reuters article - 31 march 2009

It tops budweiser in sales(this buds for you) and per hectorliter units without even selling a keg outside of China. China reportably has the biggest beer market in the world. overtaking the US market and also remember Budweiser an original czech style beer, also exports its product to over 80 countries and growing.

However the two dominant beer producing companies by volume, vehemetly dispute the numbers by arguing who holds the bragging rights of number one and number two status.

the research shows:

the top 6 selling beers by data research in the world per million hectoliters are

note: a hectorliter A metric unit of volume equal to 100 liters.

note: data taken from 2008 sales from market researcher Plato Logic

1. Snow (range) 61.0

2. Bud Light (range) 55.6

3. Budweiser 43.4

4. Skol (Brazil) 35.4

5. Corona 32.7

Bud Light has been leapfrogged by China?s Snow as the world?s highest selling beer brand, according to data obtained by Reuters from market researcher Plato Logic.

Snow, which is brewed by SABMiller with its Chinese joint venture partner China Resources Enterprises, reaped rewards from being the key player in the burgeoning Chinese market, with 2008 sales volumes surging 19.1 per cent to 61 million hectolitres*.

Plato found the top six brands included the Snow range, followed by the Bud Light range (55.6 million hectolitres), Budweiser (43.4), Skol (35.4), Corona (32.7) and Heineken (29.1).

Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world?s largest brewer and owner of the Budweiser and Bud Light trademarks, disputed the findings, asserting that Bud Light was the highest selling single trademark brand as Snow had a family of brands with over 25 different extensions.

You're talking about the american Budweiser in czech style, not the original czech Budweiser which is a huge difference in taste!

Czech (original) Budweiser-Budvar: http://budweiser-budvar.cz/en/index.html

American (Anheuser-Busch) Budweiser: http://www.budweiser.com/index.html

Adolphus Busch chose the name Budweiser because it had the slightly Germanic sound that would appeal to both Americans and German immigrants.

So IMHO the czech original is :thumbleft:

Spare me the comment about the american copy...

I agree hugo..no argument here..I have had the chance to taste both and their is a huge difference in tastes I agree..I haven't had the chance to taste the chinese snow beer yet....so I don't have an opinion on it...you are also on point with the marketing name for budweiser. ..I'm also aware of the legal riff still going on between the czech Gov(budvar brewery) and american budweiser....I say original czech style beer because believe it or not a lot of budweiser fans don't have the slightest clue that it is a czech style beer...that was not really my point...that would be a whole new discussion topic alone.. ...my main point was the numbers -- that china has passed Budweiser in beer sales volume sold...without even strongly exporting it which is amazing enough...take it easy dude..

Some great choices there!

I went to the Sunset bar and grille in Boston last night, and the bartender allowed me to steal a beer menu (no time in a Boston prison for stealing bar items...).

I'll try and scan or take a picture of it...it's quite impressive...over 400 beers.

Guiness stout celebrates 250 years article.- CNN

guinness.03.jpg

by julianne pepitone

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Arthur Guinness may have had the help of some liquid courage before he signed a 9,000-year lease on a brewery in Dublin in 1759.

But 250 years later, it's clearly worked out well. The brewery at St. James's Gate has helped make Guinness stout one of the most successful beer brands worldwide.

To celebrate what the company has dubbed "Arthur's Day," stout-lovers around the world lifted a glass of the foamy black brew to Arthur Thursday at 17:59 Greenwich Mean Time, or 1:59 ET. (See correction, below.)

Guinness parent Diageo PLC expects thousands to attend an invitation-only party tonight at the Dublin brewery, where musical acts Tom Jones, Kasabian and Estelle will play. Additionally, other artists will perform at events being held at four major music venues and 28 smaller pubs across the city.

Guinness may be distinctly Irish, but the celebration of its birth is happening all over the world; parties are being hosted in more than 150 different countries, according to the beermaker's website.

To mark the occasion, Diageo PLC has pledged to give ?2.5 million this year from the Arthur Guinness Fund to entrepreneurs.

The company says its founder was one of the first employers in Ireland to provide pensions and health care for workers, and the foundation aims to preserve that legacy.

What's your favorite beer? Pics will help.

I went to a liquor store today, and just walked down the beer fridge section for what could have been 20 minutes. I probably just stood there and "fire watched" for minutes at a time. Beer glorious beer.

I wish Thailand could get 5% of the beers that are available in other countries.

Anyway, back to the original question. What is your favorite beer?

Mine would have to be Gordon Biersch Martzen. It's a local micro brew here that is starting get a larger distribution. The Blond Bock would be my 2nd fav

I couldn't get it scanned, and now I can't even take a picture of the damn thing as I left my battery charger in the USA!!

However, I did bring the entire menu back to Thailand. I'll post that up as soon as possible :)

Harp is a horrible beer, not sure how it made it onto your list Timmy.

Now brewed exlcusively in Guernsey for Guernsey (although cans have been found in some Singapore 7 Elevens which is a bit random.

space_barley.jpg

Sapporo Breweries has begun selling six-packs of the world’s first “space beer†brewed with barley descended from seeds that spent time in space.

For now, only 250 six-packs of the beer, which Sapporo calls “Space Barley,†are available for purchase. Customers will be selected at random from those who apply through the Space Barley website before December 24.

The barley used in the beer is the fourth-generation offspring of seeds that spent five months aboard the International Space Station in 2006 as part of research that Sapporo conducted with the Russian Academy of Sciences and Okayama University. The aim of the research was to study the adaptability and life cycle of barley in zero-gravity and to explore the challenges of achieving self-sufficient food production in space.

Space Barley beer has a mellow flavor and slightly dark color reminiscent of deep space, according to Sapporo. The six-packs are priced at an astronomical 10,000 yen ($110), but Sapporo will donate the profits to Okayama University, who will use the funds to promote science education for children and foster the development of space science research in Japan and Russia.
