drlovelife8
What was the final straw? What was it that made you have enough and take a change on living in another country? For me in the UK it was......... I was tired of hearing about smack-heads beating up old women for 10 pounds in her purse, sometimes less, and then receiving almost no punishment. Street violence getting seriously out of control in Handsworth (My home district), young kids being stabbed or shot and justice never being served. The British Governments dealing of the IRA....... I still can't forgive the consessions made. I had enough and went to live in Greece, then Itlay, then Iraq, then China, then here, then Saudi, then here again. How about you? Admin_2
Boredom. I was always just generally bored. I had this HUGE love to travel...I mean I really loved traveling, but I would always return to the US to plan how I could make enough money to buy another plane ticket. Once I landed in Thailand, I lost my love for traveling. I had found whatever it was that I was looking for...though I didn't think I was actually looking for something at the time. Don't get me wrong...I still want to see other countries, but just not for too long. I'm no longer bored.
English_Bob
Also from the UK.... For me it was a mixture of high taxes, high prices and violence. 1) Taxes - I paid 40% income tax - but I didn't have kids to use the education system, I didn't need NHS, I lived on a private estate so I paid for rubbish collections and drainage through my ground fees. The only time I saw my tax money in action was when I got stopped by the police for doing 55 on a bone dry, dual carriageway in the middle of nowhere. 2) Prices? 3 or 4 quid for a tiny sandwich and 3 quid for a coffee? 3) Everyone I knew had been mugged or carjacked. And I knew I wouldn't be able to hand over my wallet to some scumbag teenager with a knife. I knew I would have to fight back. I'd done a lot of karate and was pretty handy - and I would have ended up in prison for beating a would-be mugger into a coma.... or I'd have ended up getting stabbed. Oh and 4) I hated my job. grezzzy_greer
I came to Bangkok for a 2 week project - I liked theplace and decided to stay. I wasn't really sick of Australia, but as I stayed away longer I became aware of the things I didnt like about the place. Taxes are astronomical at 49% for anyone earning over A$60,000 a year - which is JUST enough to live on in that country! Yes its a stepped tax system, but still...then there are all the "hidden taxes" in fuel, food etc... Since I left, the PC movement became increasingly powerful and is driving everyone crazy - but the Aussies - like everyone else - were too gutless to say anything - and by then I was already out of it... The police state mentality of the place - every government form has a huge red warning on the front of it about what they will do to you if the information is not absolutely accurate - and the points system for applying for anything - we need so many points of identification... The "little Johnny me-too" attitude that was perfected by the last PM...hiding behind the trouser-leg of the US and UK and when someone made an agressive statement againt one of those, Australia would act as if they were threatened too...when in reality half the world doesnt KNOW where it is and the rest dont care - and to be honest, when I lived there, that was exactly how we liked it...at that time we had a great country with a great attitude. Now they just want to copy America...and its all the **** they are copying too - not the good stuff...but ask any Australian and they will say "No, we are NOT copying them!"...haha! Look again... So - will I go back to live there - not as things stand...I love the country - the PLACE...but not the attitudes...I do go for holidays there with my kids and Grezzzy...I have relatives there of course...but to stay? Nope..Thailand is home.

Crustyjuggler
I don't have any problems with the UK. I miss drinking from the tap, the quality of food from supermarkets and the changes in the weather. I also miss my home which is now rented.... Most of all i miss my double oven, a roast dinner and 5 quid bottle of French plonk. I've been living in BKK for over 2 years now and although not a die hard Thai lover it suits my lifestyle.. I think in another 2 years i will be somewhere else... I'm not attracted to Thailand anymore and in many ways it makes my stomach turn..
PJack
I was running from the tax man. But I already had a relationship with Thailand prior to 2003 so when the opportunity came to move back here I took it. But I travel once or twice a year to the States and I like it that way.
