12 hour jet lag, how to fix?

I'll be flying home to BKK from Central America on Saturday morning.

The time there is 12 hours different from Thailand. Last time I did this trip I was a wreck / night owl for over a week after arriving to Thailand.

Does anybody know of any trick to adjust my internal clock after arriving home?

Drink lots of water, and get lots of sunlight...just like a flower.

Your body will recognize natural sunlight and adjust itself. Try getting some exercise in the later afternoon if you can...fight to stay awake during the regular hours.

Before I leave for the flight, sometimes I try to adjust my sleeping times a couple days in advance by 2-3 hours each day...it lessens the blow.

I always set my watch to the time zone of arrival as early as possible (i.e. shortly after take-off) and then try to live after this time from the beginning. Worst I ever experienced was that I had a jet lag for one day, but only when flying from East to West.

For me, if I arrive early evening then by the time you get through immigration, get your bag, shower and something to eat...you'll be wiped and then its time to sleep on the right time as your new time zone. Next morning is a breeze.

Any number of good suggestions...Melatonin is off the shelf (in the US) ...

I have used it did not hurt but I did not feel it was a complete cure.

I might add:

get a local "guide" to re acclimate you to Bkk ! O___o!

--> semi serious, I really mean push yourself to get on board the new daily schedule...

it is not just the 12 time zones---it's the 25-35 hours of travel, in my opinion...usually traveling East gets me... but when you are coming from the other side of the world, the direction doesn't matter.

If all else fails...go to the beach for a week! I feel your pain, Good luck

Oki, will try not sleeping in the plane. Yes I'm flying east from west, so that sux.

I do have a "guide" that will meet me up at 06.00 at the airport, so after the romp at home I have no idea how NOT to fall asleep, especially after skipping a nite. Ahh.

Better stock up on Red Bull's!

Well see how all this goes...

Cheers!

I have to do it, or similar, every 5 weeks. It totally depends on your flight times (departure), and what you were doing before you fly. If it is bedtime when you board, have a few red wines and go asleep. If not wait till it is bedtime. I always find if you can sleep periodically through the flight, arive in 1 piece and get well and truly pissed on (but not before) the first night, you should be fine.

But I am still capable of waking up at 3am, wide awake, wondering what to do. A beer or 2 and I am back asleep by 4.30, golfcourse by 10 am.

My tricks are stop drinking coffee and once get on the plane, I started train myself daily activities the same time schdule of the country I will visit; sleep and wake up things.Althugh , I still had jetlag for a week, but it was bad at all.

i wouldn't know a cure...I live in a perpetual state of jet lag.

All good suggestions above, but I disagree with which direction is harder to recover from. Traveling in an Easterly direction is always much worse for me than say...going from Shanghai to Amsterdam. I just arrived in Amsterdam and I feel fine, but I know when I head back to China I am going to be a wreck until I get a few beers in me.

have a chitchat with flight attendant and there might be something to do after arrival there :P

Joking! Well i would say from my experience, make yourself believe that you are 'at the time'..I believe in the power of mind.
