Updating my life in UK - Part I

It's been 11 days in the UK. I still haven't been doing much except from going to supermarkets. My bf has been busy and it's been raining so I haven't been doing much. I am so used to BKK that if it rains, then I'll do something the next day. Here my bf said life must go on, no matter what the weather is like. Tomorrow seems to be a good day since there'll be no rain, according to the weather forecast. It's gonna be very cold, but I guess that's better than rain. I think I'll have to start doing something on my own, or I'll be stuck at home. Will start looking for some evening classes that I can attend, just so that I can occupy myself with something. I've been looking at salsa class, spanish class and something... it might keep me here longer!I've been eating out a couple of times since I'm here. I'd say the food was not impressive over here. It's so not the same eating out here, coz it's very expensive and doesn't taste any good. My bf took me to a Thai restaurant last night because it was Loy Krathong. First time ever eating in a Thai restaurant overseas, the conclusion is it's NOT worth it. I have better food with the spices from Lobo packets!  Been watching some programs on TV as well. One of my most favorite at the moment is "The World's Strictest Parents". It's quite scary to see how disrespectful, and careless British teenagers are. Thai society is moving towards western parenting, western education, etc., we are totally not aware of what might follow. I would hate to see a child growing up and has no respect for adults or even to himself. There were a couple of teenagers on this program saying that they only care about today and don't wanna think about future because it's too stressful. They only care about partying and living on council tax. Although Thailand doesn't have this system for people to totally be lazy, but I think the same way of thinking is starting to show more and more in Thai society now. I'd hate to think what it'd be like if we totally adopt the western way of parenting and education, where children grow up and hardly have any respect for their parents, not doing what they are told, and don't care about their future.  One of the boys on the show said that in the UK if one wants to be cool, one has to be a rebel, but where he was sent to, one has to be smart to be cool. It's really true for most Asian countries, and I think it's a much better mentality to have. If you want to be accepted, you have to be smart, you have to be knowledgeable, not being a drug addict or a drunkard. Another shocking part is how cruel and malicious teenagers can be over here. A group of teenager killed a puppy because it was running towards them. A group of teenagers killed a man, because he asked them to give back his gf's hat. Both incidents were killing for no cause, no reason. If there was a financial matter behind it or something else, I wouldn't be so shock. But this is killing for no reason, just for the sake of killing and vindiction. It's scary to see what the world has become. It's getting long already. I'll leave you guys at peace. Take care and enjoy!

Stop watching Jeremy Kyle and take some courses at your local college. Jewelery or stained glass making could be good.

What you say about the weather, food and teenagers is true.

I guess late October isn't the best time to start your new liife in England Shannon - but I understand exactly what you mean about teenagers and disrespect. As for eating out, you can find good places, but they're few and far between and they can be very expensive. I regularly go to an Indian vegetarian restaurant not far from my home, where we can get a tasty and nutritious buffet for less than five pounds. Hope yr new life over here is happy

i felt the same way when i went to one of the most popular Thai restaurants here.they didn't have many options nor my fave gaang ga ree gai. When i had my dinner it was like WTF! you call this Thai food?.I think my wife would ooak if she ate it.So i asked the waitress If the cook was Thai, and of-course not they were all Chinese making knockoff food and passing it off as authentic to people that don't know any better. they didn't even have any friggin lime for my kowl pot kai. What few things i can make at home is way better, and my gaang ga ree gai is awesome.

disrespect for parents is the norm. hit tem up for cash, and when they get old you stick them in a home.then visit on the odd holiday maybe, or next time they are seen is at the funeral thinking about the stuff they will get.

Shannon many Asian woman never make the transition & the change of cultures as many foreigners don't when placed in the same situation or get married with out thinking and understanding the brides culture.

Any one that thinks they can just be or go to another country and think that they will fit in instantly should think again,it ain't easy.

I feel in your update that you have some extremely good points about punks etc,and my personal opinion is that a lot of the crap and dead beat activities they get up to is down loaded from their parents and its a bit late for governments to make parents accountable.

And rounding up my comment that's why in many ways that Asian people who in general look up to their parents and respect are in a better situation than our selves.

Never trust Thai restaurants overseas !!!!

My friend drove to the very 'authentic Thai cuisine' in the US that when I ordered 'pad kraprao' but I had to force myself to eat 'pad horapa'

Kids are certainly more respectful here, that much is true... Probably because the ability to think for themselves is universally stripped at primary level.. Judging a country from its 'made to shock' reality TV quite eloquently shows the problems with the Thai educational system..

You've already set yourself up to dislike another culture in just 11 days... this speaks volumes of your own personality more than it does regarding your situation.

However, keep posting.... i really want to see how miserable you become when it actually does become cold.

I know how it feels, the first few months was the most hardest thing I had to cope with as you missed all those things you used to. Just find something that makes you feel excited and fun because I know staying at home all day will be bored as hell. Maybe you can find some thai friends over there and have a get together, usually talking to someone in your own language will ease some of the homesickness. While for food I prefer to cook my own but in the end I'm kind of use to the taste of bland food over here now.
