Ironically, the American boy scouts burn thousands of US flags every year; when will the US declare war on them?

:?

They already have...

Have you seen some of the inner city public schools in the USA?

would not have thought that the Boy Scout movement had a big membership in US inner cities??

Unless there are Crack Dealing and Car Jacking merit badges?

:?

Yeah, but they (Boy Scounts) burn it according to the rules

Yes, and the American Legion. They burn the flags if they are in a bad state of repair and is done as part of a ceremony yada yada yada...

What? Did you think I was accusing the Boy Scout movement of being infiltrated by fundamentalists and mounting a mass protest against the government??

Though if would be funny if that happened...

Bill Hicks pointed out that it wasn't the flag... it was what the flag stands for.

So despite the error in the number of stars etc, it's still a symbol for many Americans.

When Americans see their flag being burnt in Cairo and Islamabad, it is offensive to many.

When I then read that American GIs have burnt a copy of the Koran, I don't care at all.... if Islam is the one true religion, a mere book makes no difference whatsoever.

When I was young private stationed in Fort Hood, I was told that I would see a lot of people around the base burning flags(flag desecration). They told us to pay no mind and they can do what ever they want, since US citizen are protected by the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Yes, but the last time an amendment to make desecrating the flag a criminal offence (and thus negating that first amendment right) was voted on, it only lost in the Senate by one vote!!

:)

I have a feeling that more Americans get upset when they see someone on television buring and stomping on an actual flag, than they do a stupid advert like this one. Well, maybe except for the diehard red-neck who can't count the stars

For what it is worth:

Iain as I recall your right it was voted down by one vote or a very small margin (by a republician -i. e. conservative Senate-the current one is 60-40 in reverse and now unlikey to take such a position).

But if the Senate does pass an admendment it then has to be ratified by 2/3 of the 50 states ( a popular vote in each individual state)...one of the "safeguards" to the consititution. It is hard to mess around with it--some would argue it gets backdoored by the courts though.

I don't like seeing the St Georges Cross or Union Jack being burned ESPECIALLY when it happens in our own country. I think anyone caught doing it on British soil should be deported back to wherever they came from (or in the case of british born dissedents back to wherever their heritage may be even though this is probably not possible).

Can't stop them doing it in their own country but I always ask myself, do they have a stockpile of british and american (and danish) flags to be burned when we do something they don't like or do they order one from ebay and hope it arrives in time for the news cameras?

I don't mind seeing people burn British/Yank flags after we've gone over and terrorized them.

I despise the, 'go back to your own country attitude' as well, its so damn BNP.

In that case it would seem normal venting right. Its amazing the things people will stand up and get pissed about. The whole world is being squeezed into the role of little worker bees ! Its so Orwellian and in our face daily but somehow everything is ok. Well got to go ....great show on the tube

so where would they have repatriated my mate to?? Considering he was of Scottish descent?

It's a flag. If someone wants to burn it to show dissent, let them.

And mate, if you are going to get all teary eyed and patriotic, at least know the name of your flag;

the UNION JACK only flies on ships.

the UNION flag flies everywhere else.

Really? I didn't know that... I've always called it the Union Jack.

Thanks.

On a separate note - I always consider myself English, although I respect the Union FLAG - how about you... are you Scottish, British, European?

Which is the one you most associate with?

(Same question for anyone else who's interested...)

The Union Flag, also known as the Union Jack, is the flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.[1] It retains an official or semi-official status in some Commonwealth Realms; for example, it is known as the Royal Union Flag in Canada.[2] The current design dates from the Union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801.[3]
Wikipedia
Whether to use "Union Flag" or "Union Jack" is a matter of debate.

The Flag Institute, the vexillological organisation for the United Kingdom, stated that the term Union Flag is a "relatively recent idea". Jack was a word previously used to denote any flag.[4] It also noted that "From early in its life the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag".[3] Nevertheless, the term "Union Flag" is used in King Charles's proclamation of 1634,[5] and in King George III's proclamation of 1 January 1801 concerning the arms and flag of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.[6] One theory is that the "Jack" part of the name may also have come from the name of King James I/James VI of Scotland.[7]

I think either can be used - but it was an interesting side note, Iain.

hmmm. Yes, who the f*ck is Scott? And anyway, Hadrians Wall had nothing to do with Scots - you are a few centuries out. In those days it was the Picts. At the time of the Romans, the Scotii were still in Ireland...
