One thing that pissed me off about farang guys when I first came to Thailand, was their assumption that because we share the same colour skin, we have something in common.

I remember sitting in bars and restaurants minding my own business when some random guy would sit opposite and start making banal conversation.

I made myself a promise, I wouldn't spend time with people in Thailand whom I wouldn't spend time with in UK. If I think someone is a d*ck, I don't waste my time with them.

It's nothing personal, but if they are boring, stupid, smelly, immature, whoremongering, alcoholic, junkie, scrounging assholes, I don't want to be around them.

(If I talk to any of you, it's because you have qualified as 'acceptable'... Be grateful.)

Miserable git. So if any white guy talks to you, you ignore him? How do you know if someone is immature, boring, stupid etc until you have had a conversation with them?

One of the things I have always liked about thailand is that people in general are more friendly, both thais and foreigners. Going for a beer alone in bangkok more often than not turns into an interesting experience due to the people you end up meeting. The same can't be said for going for a solo beer in England..

It depends on their approach...

If someone starts with, "Excuse me, do you mind if I sit here?" - I usually don't have a problem (unless they're wearing fisherman pants, henna tattoo, cornrows or dreadlocks).

If they open their conversation with, "Awright mate... 'Ow about veese Thai birds ven?" - I know I'm not going to have a decent conversation.

Besides which, I'm willing to take the risk that I won't have missed many stimulating conversations since the odds are severely stacked in my favour.

I've got a pretty low opinion of mankind as a whole, and Bangkok / Thailand has a lower than average range of specimens. I don't really want to spend countless hours searching for that diamond in the rough.

If you think you qualify (and bear in mind it's a difficult club to get accepted into), please send a resume and a humorous anecdote for my attention - I'll get back to you if you pass.

Before i came to Thailand i just thought foreigners are the same as theyd be back home.

But, and this applies more to Bangkok expats say under the age of 45 then anywhere else and ive lived in and worked in a lot of countries.

Ive never met so many people that are absolutely full of themselves in my entire life, they think theyre gods gift to women, are arrogant to the point where they overstep the mark when i know after 1 second of meeting them theyre a shy little boy back home, many like to think theyre a bit of a geezer come criminal and you shouldnt mess with them as their secretary wifes uncle is Plod, or they run some crappy bar and meet plod who comes and take money off them. And finally there is the kind that are making 3-4 million baht a year here and think theyre now the Bilderberg elites. So many like to reinvent themselves here.

Where as the many 60 year old + expats who come here to retire, the ones people like to mock for marrying some brass are pretty much the same as they are back home and are as nice as a person can be.

You met me at Cowboy and bugged me with conversations about 'Orange men', 'Papist arseholes' and 'Protestant *****'... I didn't know what you were talking about.

I remember a few months ago, wandering home when I saw a guy having a bit of trouble. He'd fallen over a little picket fence into a hedge. He was now being swallowed by the hedge, arse-first, arms flailing, not being helped much by the oldest hooker in Nana. It didn't help that he was pissed as a fart and couldn't control any of his limbs.

I stopped to pull the fucker out of the hedge, whereupon he wanted to hug me. He asked me where I came from (surprise - he was English too)... so now "We can be mates, you and me."

Sadly, I lost his number and wasn't able to find out what other adventures he'd been up to.
