that shows how culture expert you are, drlove

I'm no expert, but I just think 'farang' isn't racist

It's not racist. It's the same as saying "that guy over there." It can be taken in any way you want it to be.

You might get away with classifying it as ignorant, but it's so far from racist it's funny that anyone would ever even consider arguing about it (usually the people who think "farang" is racist are those who can't speak more than taxi/restaurant Thai).

I agree 50% farang man

RACIST !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not racist.

That was an ad for a beer distribution company so I understand why they wouldn't want to leave "yer kinda people" alone with boxes of beer!

And lets not get into the stupid debate of whether or not the word "farang" is racist or not. To the PC brigade: IT'S NOT f*cking RACIST!! It's just that the BS PC world hasn't yet fully installed itself here, so enjoy it while it's here.

Farang is not "racist" word. I insist!

That is the problem though. They are being very polite not trying to offend, but haven't you introduced your farang friend, or don't they really know the philipinos names? That is where the unintended rudeness comes in. To those foreigners it looks like they don't even care enough to remember their names, and that is rude. I know they mean no wrong, but they are doing wrong without even knowing, and to the foreigner it looks like they really don't care to know their name. That is racism. Even though it isn't intended, it is.

This is one big point of "Culture different" too.

Direct experience, this might help you to understand Thais more.

When i talked on the phone with my friends in Thailand.

My bf asked me. "Who are you talking too?"

I said, "My friend in Bangkok" or "My university friend" etc...

My bf pissed off one time and he said to me. "Dont they have f*cking names?!!!"

And I didnt realise that, that bothered him,, LOL

I didnt mention their names to my bf because he never met her and if I say "It's Apple"

he would ask me more.. "Which Apple?, Is that one in Bkk or the university friend? so on."

And instead of explain the whole things, i just say "My university friend"

There is nothing to do with being "racist" or "rude" in this case, is it?

In this case how you explain it, it is a case of being lazy....lolol. You don't want to take the time to explain to your BF who your friend is. Is he interested? From how you explained it, yes he is, and you only have to explain once to him who it is, then it is much less words to use in the future to let him know who it was you were talking to. Just because he has never met her doesn't mean you can't let him know who she is.

He is your BF, and interested in your life. Is it rude to not take the time to explain who your friend from the university is? Learning culture when you are in a relationship with a foreigner works both ways. He has let you know that to him it is rude not to use a persons name. Do you not care about his feelings? The way you explain it, it sounds like you don't, because it is too much work. Yes, that is rude, and has nothing to do with culture.

So, open your heart abit if you want to learn to understand other cultures.

I think that is very important.

more seriously ....

MORE seriously? So you were still serious about comment, eh? ;)

Like SBI said, it's neutral but can be used in a negative way. I have seen very few people claim farang to be a racist word and a lot of people repeating over and over that it's not racist. I'm not really sure who they're talking to :-)

I can say after consulting with the TF oracle that farang is officially not racist. Now, can people quit writing posts saying that it's not racist to imaginary opponents? LOL

What I believe Ciaran and I are talking about is whether or not referring to someone in the 3rd person is rude.

Is the following rude or not?

Apple: Lek, this is my friend Bob.

Lek: Sawadii ka.

Bob: Sawadii khrap.

Apple (in Thai): So where do you want to go eat?

Lek (in Thai): Can the farang eat Thai food?

Apple (in Thai): Yes, my friend loves Thai food.

Lek (in Thai): Does the farang have a car or do you want to take a taxi?

Apple (in Thai): He knows a nice place close to here he wants to go to.

Lek (in English): Khun Bob, we can walk to the restaurant from here?

In my opinion, Lek is being rude. She can use, "him", "your friend", or "Bob" to refer to Bob but she keeps using "farang". She not being racist (though she might be that as well) but I consider that rude.

And I'm fairly sure that most Thais would be insulted if you turned the table on them. If I'm sitting there talking with another farang who is with his girlfriend I'm pretty sure she would not be crazy about me referring to her as "the Thai".

So where did you meet the Thai?

Does the Thai speak English?

I don't mind being called a farang. In fact, my original screen name on TF was farangfarang. And I don't mind walking into a nightclub or out in the sticks someplace and hearing people saying "farang" as I walk past. But once you get to know me or we're introduced I do expect that people quit calling me farang instead of using either my name, "him", or any of the proper terms Thais use (pee, nong, etc).

Now, it could be a cultural difference as SBI says but since this thread has started I've asked a few Thais if they would mind it if when two farangs are talking they called them "the Thai". Not one person was fine with that. Nearly everyone has said it would be impolite.

And that is what I think KB is talking about in terms of hypocrisy. I think the best way to describe it is what one person said to me. Calling us farang in conversations in Thai after they know our names is not polite. But the people doing it usually don't mean offense. There's no intent to convey anything hurtful even if what they are doing is rude.

YES, Im lazy to explain the whole things and NO, I need to explain it more than one time.

Because i have 250 people who I get contact with and there are maybe 10 of them that are actually the close ones.

And all 10 of them, my bf knows everyting about them even though he met a few of them.

So, what i wrote to reply you is what im trying to explain to you in general when you commented on bCool's comment.

when you said that not mentioning the name is racist and bla bla bla..

So, why don we stick to the THAT subject that "NOT CALLING THE NAME doesnt always mean "RACIST"

But it might be becoz Thai ppl are lazy and we dont think that it's important.

And the issue about "caring about my bf's feeling" that you just mentioned.

Just because you read some of my comments that I wrote, you JUDGE me that i dont care and Im rude.. LOL

Oh well, from many of your comments about Thai culture and Thai people that you have been giving in many topics.

I still close my mouth shut becoz i dont know you and Im trying to understand why you think like that,

and try to explain as Im THAI so we can understand each others abit more..

But seem like you are not really interested in OTHER'S PEOPLE opinions anyway..

So what's the point..

Obviously, you havent seen when "Im rude" yet.

I wasn't referring to this thread per say, but on TF I've had endless debates (especially with digitalcat) over the past couple of years about the word. It just turned into one of those points where everyone just shutup because we weren't getting anywhere...what's new?

By definition you would call the word "farang" as it is used in Thai culture, a stereotyping of a class of people, not recognizing the individuality of that person. Dehumanizing them if you know their real name, and by some definitions racist if you don't know their name, just by the fact that you are stereotyping them.

Bill explains exactly what I am talking about. If you know a foreigner's name, yet you choose to call him, or her, farang when you are talking to your friends in Thai, you are stereotyping that person, dehumanizing them, and that, by some people's definition, is racism. That is exactly what I am talking about in one of the ways Thais use the word farang. It is very rude.

Again, it is a 2 way street, I do understand how the word farang is used in Thai society, and I usually just smile when I hear it in reference to me, but to discount a person you know by name as "farang" to your friends, or family, is dehumanizing that person, and not trying to understand a different culture yourself, as you expect the farang to do. That is hypocracy, and considered rude, even by quite a few Thais.

As my friend did in adapting to his wife's family, he calls them all "Thai" now, and his wife supports him in this. They get very upset, but his wife just laughs at them.

Actually it works both ways. I'm guessing other farangs (oh, I used the bad word) are like me so I'll generalize and say that this is common. What you are talking about isn't a Thai thing at all.

I'm not even sure if it's a bad thing. Especially in my world where I might be getting a phone call from someone in Europe who wants me to do some research for them or write a paper for them on some sort of issue dealing with gambling laws or gambling issues in some European country.

The time it would take me to explain who it was, how I know them (or how they know me), why they wanted to hire me, what I have to do, and exactly what it is that they want me to do to someone who knows nothing about my industry seems wasteful.

It doesn't mean that I don't respect them but it's much easier to say something like "Oh, it's just some business."

In this case how you explain it, it is a case of being lazy....lolol. You don't want to take the time to explain to your BF who your friend is. Is he interested? i just don't get it WHY some FARANG don't like to be called FARANG even though this FARANG word is not rude nor racist at all. yes, of course, surely, definitely, absolutely, first and foremost, i did read most of earlier comment except ones that too darn long and i can't be bother with long comment but going nowhere.

i even told some of my FARANG men friends including my ex-boss why we, thais, call them FARANG and they see it in funny way so this bullshit thought of we are racist just because we call white people as FARANG is...... whatever.

bye for now all FARANG here and there.

Hello Karnie, even though farang may not be rude or racist, I still think its derogative. We know already that we are not part of 'the club', there is no extra specific word needed.

The political correct word for us, which already perfectly exists in thai language in an equally short format, is 'human with different nationality'. Why don't you make use of this expression (its just one syllable more)?

Because (thank god) the PC brigade hasn't yet found a home here in Thailand.

Let's try and keep it that way for as long as possible!
