Things you like and dis-like about bkk

Well....since I'm contemplating making the move to BKK, and I'm on another insomnia binge, I thought I would throw this out as my fist ever post!

I've travelled to BKK many times before for work. Normally my stays lasted between 4-6 weeks. My longest stay was a 3 month stint. So I'm pretty familiar to, certain extent, about what day to day life in BKK is like. But I have to believe living there year round is a completely different animal. So with that in mind I would like to hear from the expats...or even the Thais that have lived overseas and moved back to bkk.....

What do you like most and dislike most about BKK compared to your day to day life back in your home country....

this is my second time living here and i am still learning and evolving. I dont really 'hate' anything here (although a few things do get me down), but i do love many things. Living here long term is definately different from just staying a few months. Also, it depends how u gonna live that will determine what u love or hate here. Eg, if ur on a big salary and can live high, or if ur running ur own business but dont have too much in savings etc. Different lifestyles will have different issues. It also depends just how much u assimilate into 'thai', how many quality thai connections and friends you make, or how much you live a 'farang' life here. Whatever way you choose, if you stay here long term, one thing is certain - it will change you forever.

There are too many things I like about BKK to mention, but the 2 main things I dislike are the weather and traffic. I like spending time outdoors, but in BKK I don't feel comfortable staying outside too long because of the heat.

I lived abroad for a while and it made me realize how much I love the heat in this country!!

Actually BKK in Dec/Jan isn't too bad, but usually when I return home to Melbourne, I just wanna kiss the cold concrete ground when I get off the plane :P

I Love:

availability of food on the street after 10 pm.

a very good hub (land transportation to other provinces)

Villa Market and some other grocery stores

Pantip

Saensaeb Klong - long tailed boats, very fast.. pumping adrenalin.

ferry piers & sunset

cheap books, cheap & spicy somtam, cheap motorcycle taxi fare.

Dislike:

soi dogs

destroyed infrastructure

very pricey import taxes for wines

TRUE internet and it's so called "weekly maintenance"

elephants on the pavement

pedestrians, bikes, motorcycles share the same ole footpath

traffic congestion and some butthole drivers.

public restrooms .. cockroaches, bugs, no tissue paper, nasty toilet seat

sweltering weather, pollution, piles of trash after midnight

wires hanging down

I like how when you bargain, the "calculator" comes out

and after some "complex" calculations the "calculator" gets passed onto you the customer. You then pass on the revised calculation onto the merchant.

I think it's a very polite way of bargaining, no-one gets offended as the "calculator" gets the blame when a deal cannot be agreed upon.

Thanks for the feedback... I'm targeting mid year to make the move an will have a nice buffer savings. I would not make the move unless I am able to maintain my current lifestyle. I consider myself fairly middle class here in the California. Actually I'm assuming that living there will be cheaper! Living here in San Jose has a very high cost of living. Especially when it comes to housing expenses. I'm currently doing all of the due diligence on costs. But I basically have my own business that I can transact from anywhere (as long as I have the web)...so I figure ..why not do it from there for awhile... I have some thai friends from my work years there... also know a few that used to live here and have moved back... so no problem there.. thanks again!

thanks again...
