Let him be outraged. The guy (Dunn) was an a**hole. He was drunk and driving at over 100mph - the only good thing was he did not kill any other road users with his idiocy...

No, but he did kill his passenger, and that is not a good thing. You don't always look to others he might have hit on the roadway to find the victims of a drunk's stupidity.

Yes, but his passenger had been out drinking with him, had probably encouraged him in that drinking, and got into the car knowing full well that; a) Dunn was well over the legal limit to drive, and B) That he was hardly likely to carefully drive home at 30mph.

Ergo he shoulders as much culpability as Dunn.

I like this story; proof that people cam make a choice other than the 'traditional' ones normally presented to you at the polling booth. Thailand take note!!!

Iceland brought in from the cold thanks to party of punks and pop stars

Grey clouds hang heavy in the skies as the scout troop marches into the cemetery, followed by a noisy brass band made up of scruffy teenagers in trainers and elderly men in suits. Behind them tramp hundreds of Reykjavik residents, many carrying Iceland's flag.

The music stops, then the crowd gathers round as a woman in traditional dress places a large wreath on a grave. It is Independence Day, and people are here to honour the 200th anniversary of the man whose birth this day marks: Jón Sigurdsson, hero of the nation's struggle for freedom from Danish control.

Overseeing it all is a burly man with a sharp haircut. People come up to greet him. Some take their photograph with him. He smiles, then chats to environmental campaigners carrying banners against political corruption, one of which features a picture of Jón Sigurdsson with a wordplay on his most famous slogan, changing "We all protest" to "We all puke".

This is Jón Gnarr, the unlikely mayor of Iceland's capital, who delivered a huge shock to the political system in the wake of the country's financial meltdown. One year ago the comedian led a gang of ex-punks, poets and pop stars to control of city hall. They call themselves anarcho-surrealists and their aim is to transform politics.

A stylish blonde woman in a bright green coat bounds up to say hello. Eva Einarsdóttir, a human rights activist nicknamed "Palestine Eva", is chairwoman of the national day committee and has arrived fresh from a ceremony with the president and prime minister. How was it? "Fine," she says. "I managed not to laugh, although it was hard at times."

Such irreverence has made the Best Party loved and loathed in equal measure. It burst on to the scene before last year's municipal election, satirising politics and throwing traditional parties into disarray.

Its first pledge was to break all its promises, making the party almost impossible to attack, then it promised a polar bear to the zoo and a drug-free parliament within 10 years.

The party's only advertisement was in a newspaper personal column, saying: "The Best Party wishes to meet good people aged between 18 and 90." Its 10-point plan had 13 points. And the party's campaign video featured candidates singing Tina Turner's Simply the Best, with the chorus: "We are the best, the bestest of parties, best for Reykjavik, best city of every week." It works in Icelandic.

Iceland was ripe for change, having effectively gone bust thanks to the cronyism of a cluster of politicians and bankers who thought that they could turn an island of fishermen with a population of 318,000 into a financial superpower.

In less than four years, the most rapid expansion of a banking system in history saw three privatised banks develop assets 10 times the size of the country's GDP. It was the Icarus economy. Property prices tripled, the stock market multiplied nine times, and people borrowed heavily – often in foreign currencies – to cash in on the boom. The crash was fast, hard and painful, worsened by the collapse of the krona as the state, unable to bail out the banks, refused to pay foreign creditors.

The strategy looks smart now, compared with events in Greece and Ireland, but the country was angry and frightened. Voters wanted change, and the Best Party caught the mood, capturing Reykjavik with 34.7% of the vote. "No one has to be afraid of the Best Party," said Jón in his acceptance speech. "Because it is the best party. If it wasn't, it would be called the Worst Party or the Bad Party. We would never work with a party like that."

The tone was jocular, but the intent deadly serious, as becomes clear talking to Jón and Einar Örn Benediktsson, who used to sing alongside Björk in the Sugarcubes and is now Reykjavik's head of culture and tourism. We dine on guillemot and lamb in a harbourside restaurant, the infamous whaling boats bobbing outside the window, while the pair explain their mission to transform political discourse.

"The human spirit has been crushed by small-minded people playing politics," says Einar Örn. "We have no agenda and are just fully engaged in trying to do our best. We have no party members and no idea about spin or political punchlines. When we don't know something, we admit ignorance."

Given the frivolity of their campaign and the fact the mayor is a famous comedian, best known for playing a bad-tempered Marxist on television, they have surprised people with the seriousness they have shown in running the city. They claim their campaign promises had serious undertones – the polar bear pledge, for example, was a satirical comment on attitudes to immigration and climate change, since four of the creatures have been shot in recent years after swimming into Icelandic waters.

They freely admit they have made mistakes, confronted with huge political problems in a city inhabited by nearly half the Icelandic people. They had to slash Reykjavik's spending by 10%, which involved cutting bus services and putting up charges for services, while Jón oversaw the sacking of 70 staff as he grappled with a mismanaged utility company with debts five times the size of the city budget.

Jón has found the role highly stressful, becoming ill as he struggled with complex issues. He left school at 16 after a troubled adolescence, during which he was a heavy glue sniffer and was sent to a special boarding school. Giving a mayoral speech at an award to a social worker, he burst into tears, wondering if he was cutting the sort of services that helped him as a teenager. He was relieved to find he wasn't.

He describes himself as an anarchist, inspired by Gandhi, Tolstoy, Bakunin and the British punk band, Crass. His radio shows have included crank calls to the CIA and the White House, but he claims to have known nothing of politics beyond what he had seen on The Wire. "I just love ******* with narrow-minded people who take themselves too seriously. I really like to irritate arrogant people, all those authoritarian people who want to control what we say and do."

He has banned religious groups from city schools, dressed in drag to mark gay pride, and had the city's sky-blue crest tattooed on his left forearm. After his summer holiday, he plans to paint his nails, wear lipstick and campaign for great apes to be given human rights. "I might try resigning on a really minor issue that I get wrong, since no one here has resigned for all the huge things that went wrong."

Such tactics infuriate the traditional parties, who deride them as jokers and amateurs. "Because of their lack of experience, the officials have gained power, which is not a good thing," said Kjartan Magnússon of the conservative Independence party. "Also they said they would never raise taxes, which persuaded lots of people to vote for them, then put them up. They're just another old-fashioned socialist party."

Jón was also attacked as a porn user after he got bored with the banality of the 400 interviews he has given since taking office and, asked by a French journalist to name his favourite website, joked that it was a porn site. The father of five, an emotional and open character, finds the smears upsetting.

Much of the opposition is in a newspaper edited by David Oddsson, an admirer of Margaret Thatcher who unleashed the bank boom while prime minister. The Best Party tactics are to stay silent under fire, remaining positive and courteous. ''It is a challenge, to be honest," admits Jón. "But if opponents say 'you are an a**hole', I ask them not to state it as fact, but as their opinion."

Now journalists have identified a creed called "Gnarrism", defined as politics by people opposed to politics. Meanwhile the party is attracting interest around Europe, travelling to Austria, France and Ireland to explain its tactics, with a trip to Frankfurt next. Its members' dark humour doesn't always translate: Einar Örn said Irish activists had looked baffled when advised to listen to Lady Gaga.

The Best Party's popularity has waned as it tackles tough issues, but still one in five voters backs it and Jón is viewed as the nation's "most honourable" politician. The big question is whether it now moves to the national stage. Gudfridur Lilja Grétarsdóttir, head of the Left Green parliamentary group, is among those hoping it does. "We needed something to shake up the system, since it's so corrupt," she said. "Who knows if this experiment will work, but at least there is hope of change in Iceland. Without [this party], there would be none."

I don't think it should necessarily be kept for her husband. But I do think the first time should be 'special' and a memory that you can treasure for the rest of your life. Even if that memory is only about 2-3 minutes long!! ; )

I personally think it's borderline crazy for both the man and the woman to save virginity for marriage. It makes no sense whatsoever besides religious views of purity and all that nonsense.

If you want a marriage to have over a 50% chance of lasting, have sex before the ring goes on. Otherwise, the stone-age should be left with the stones.

Lady Gaga 'sued after making money from Japan earthquake aid wristbands'

Lady Gaga has been sued for £3.1million after allegedly profiteering from her own charity wristband she sold to help the victims of the Japanese earthquake.

The singer is said to have grossly overcharged for shipping costs and wrongly put sales tax on what should have been a charitable donation.

She is also accused of retaining some of the money paid for the wristband itself despite assuring fans all the money would go to Japan.

Mail Online has contacted the star's representatives but there has been no reply as yet.

Gaga has been sued under her real name of Stefani Germanotta under charges normally used to fight racketeering.

Live Nation Merchandising, Universal Music and a number of Gaga’s business ventures have also been named too.

The lawsuit, filed at the U.S Federal Court in Detroit, states that they all used a ‘deceptive advertising campaign’ and a ‘pattern of racketeering’ to persuade the public to buy the $5 (£3.10) wristband from Gaga’s official website.

The court papers state they ‘misrepresented to individuals and to the public at large...that ‘all proceeds’ derived from the wristbands would be donated to the (Japan) Relief Effort’.

In reality, the lawsuit says, a portion of the cost of the wristband was held back and kept as profit.

It also claims that fans were charged £2.50 for shipping when the real cost was 31p - and Gaga and her associates kept the difference.

The lawsuit states that the Poker Face star ‘then used the inflated financials to solicit additional "donations" as evidence of the good they were doing.'

The allegation, if true, will be mortifying for Gaga who had made much of her strong ethics, notably on issues like gay rights.

She has also repeatedly spoken about how she identifies with those in society who are on the edges or have been excluded.

The wristband is still for sale on Gaga’s official merchandising website with the caption: ‘Little Monsters, show your support for Japan with this ‘We Pray For Japan’ wristband!

‘Choose your price to add an additional donation with your wristband.

All proceeds go directly to Japan relief efforts.’

Within 48 hours of its launch it raised £156,000, though it is not clear what the final total is.

The class action lawsuit has been brought by U.S. consumer attorneys 1-800-Law-Firm on behalf an unspecified number of individuals.

It was filed under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organization

(RICO) act, which has been used to try Catholic sex abuse cases and criminality by the Hells Angels Motorcycle club.

Gaga and the other defendants have 30 days to respond.

Ari Kresch, a lawyer with the company, said that it filed the lawsuit after being contacted by Gaga fans who felt they had been cheated.

‘Other stars will encourage you to donate to a legitimate charity like the Red Cross but Lady Gaga took it upon herself to collect the money and did not turn it over.

‘We don’t know the extent of Lady Gaga’s involvement but this was done by people representing her, this was done on her watch,’ he said.

Woman sprays police with breast milk

By Cynthia Johnston | Reuters

CHICAGO (Reuters) - A lactating U.S. woman was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct after she sprayed sheriff's deputies with breast milk as they tried to remove her from a vehicle, police said on Monday.

Ohio-resident Stephanie Robinette, 30, was arrested and charged with domestic violence and assault linked to a domestic dispute, as well as resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, according to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

It said Robinette's husband told authorities the pair had been attending a wedding when his wife got drunk and started a dispute. He said that she hit him multiple times before locking herself in her car outside a banquet facility on Saturday.

Sheriff Walter L. Davis III said that when police approached the car to speak to her, she yelled profanities and refused to get out.

"When deputies attempted to remove Robinette from the vehicle she advised the deputies that she was a breastfeeding mother and proceeded to remove her right breast from her dress and began spraying deputies and the vehicle with her breast milk," Davis said.

Robinette was later removed from the car and arrested after more deputies arrived on the scene.

"This is a prime example of how alcohol can make individuals do things they would not normally do," Davis said.

Water insect makes record noise with penis

By Ella Davies

Reporter, BBC Nature

A tiny water boatman is the loudest animal on Earth relative to its body size, a study has revealed.

Scientists recorded the aquatic animal "singing" at up to 99.2 decibels, the equivalent of listening to a loud orchestra play while sitting in the front row.

The insect makes the sound by rubbing its penis against its abdomen in a process known as "stridulation".

Researchers say the song is a courtship display performed to attract a mate.

Micronecta scholtzi are freshwater insects measuring just 2mm that are common across Europe.

In a study published in the journal PLoS One, scientists from France and Scotland discovered that the small animals make a mighty sound.

The team of biologists and engineering experts recorded the insects using specialist underwater microphones.

On average, the songs of M. scholtzi reached 78.9 decibels, comparable to a passing freight train.

"We were very surprised. We first thought that the sound was coming from larger aquatic species such as a Sigara species [of] lesser water boatmen," said engineering expert Dr James Windmill from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.

"When we identified without any doubt the sound source, we spent a lot of time making absolutely sure that our recordings of the sounds were calibrated correctly."

Dr Windmill explained that the reason the insects don't deafen us is down to the bug's underwater lifestyle.

99% of the sound is lost when transferring from water to air but despite this, the songs were still loud enough to be audible to the human ear.

"The song is so loud that a person walking along the bank can actually hear these tiny creatures singing from the bottom of the river," said Dr Windmill.

The majority of the loudest animals on Earth are also the biggest, with blue whale songs reaching 188 dB and elephant's rumbling calls measuring 117 dB.

Although remarkable acoustic signals are made by a range of invertebrates, including the miniature cricket and preying mantis, and by large mammals, none compare to M. scholtzi once body size is taken into account.

"If you scale the sound level they produce against their body size, Micronecta scholtzi are the loudest animals on Earth," said Dr Windmill.

Researchers believe that sexual selection could be the reason why the insects' songs reach such high amplitude.

"We assume that this could be the result of a runaway selection," biologist and co-author Dr Jerome Sueur from the Museum of Natural History, Paris, told the BBC.

"Males try to compete to have access to females and then try to produce a song as loud as possible potentially scrambling the song of competitors."

Dr Sueur explained that the competition could have exaggerated the volume of males' songs over time.

In many insects, the song volume is limited because predators would hear them, but observations suggest that M. scholtzi lack auditory predators.

Modifications

To produce the intense sound, the water boatmen "stridulate" by rubbing a ridge on their penis across the ridged surface of their abdomen.

"There is a least another one insect producing sound with its genitalia. This is a pyrallid moth, Syntonarcha iriastis, that uses highly modified genitalia to produce ultrasonic signals," explained Dr Sueur.

"Insects seem to be able to use any part of their body to generate sound. Some of them use their wings, others their legs, abdomen, head, wings, thorax etcetera."

What makes M. scholtzi extraordinary is that the area they use to create sound only measures about 50 micrometres across, roughly the width of a human hair.

"We really don't know how they make such a loud sound using such a small area," said Dr Windmill.

Without any obvious adaptations to amplify the sound, the question of how the animals physically make such a loud call remains a mystery.

"These very small bugs create sound at very high level, and it could be very useful for future ultrasonic systems to learn how they do that," said Dr Windmill.

England 4th in FIFA world rankings ... like WTF !!!!

What a brilliant month it's been for the England football team. Fabio Capello must be proud with the position his side have achieved in June's Fifa rankings published on Wednesday morning. A home 2-2 draw with Switzerland has pushed England to the heady heights of the fourth best-ranked team in world football.

They have been this high only twice before – in January 1998, when Glenn Hoddle's team had qualified for the 1998 World Cup after a tactically canny and tenacious draw with Italy in Rome, and in September 2006 after Steve McClaren's side began qualification for Euro 2008 with false-dawn victories over Andorra and Macedonia.

It seems a ludicrously lofty perch for a team that has failed to get into the final four in the past five World Cups and past three European Championships. But then the nuances of the Fifa system often throw up anomalies.

Nine year old girl carrying her own twin

Seriously...WTF?

A 9-year-old girl in Greece entered a hospital with stomach pains and left grieving a twin she never even knew existed. The girl, whose name has not been revealed, had a swollen belly and abdominal pains that doctors at Larissa General Hospital attributed to a tumor. After the growth was surgically removed, they discovered that it was actually the girl's embryonic twin.

"They could see on the right side that her belly was swollen, but they couldn't suspect that this tumor would hide an embryo," hospital director Iakovos Brouskelis said.

The embryo was a formed fetus measuring more than two inches long. There was no brain or umbilical cord, but there was a head, hair and eyes.

While cases of one twin absorbing the other in the womb is unusual, it isn't completely unheard of. Andreas Markou, head of the hospital's pediatric department, says it happens in about one of every 500,000 live births.

The girl made a complete recovery, but not surprisingly, her family wishes to remain anonymous.

Man fined after returning more than £10,000 in cash

You'd think that finding more than £10,000 in cash, in a bag next to a cash machine, and returning it to its rightful owners would be applauded. But for one man, all that it resulted in was a £300 fine.

Robert Adams, 54, saw the bag full of money next to a cash machine with Chase Bank's logo on the side. Instead of taking advantage, the resident of Arlington Heights, Illinois, returned it to the bank in question.

But he made a mistake, by giving police false information about exactly where he found it.

Adams found the large sum of cash on the night of 6 June while using an ATM inside the shop Walgreens. He had planned to meet a woman for a date, but when she failed to show decided to buy a drink before heading home.

Instead of handing in the money in the area where he found it, Adams took it to a police station nearer to his home where he said he felt more comfortable speaking to local police in familiar surroundings.

"I didn't want to go back into Walgreens, so I thought I would drive to the Chase Bank near my house and return it," he told the Southtown Star in the US.

But thinking it would result in fewer questions, Adams told the bank — and the police — that he'd found the money near his home not in the shop.

The error cost him $500 (£312).

Of course, leaving that sort of cash just lying about is a concern for any bank. So they, the security firm that lost the money and the police started to look into it. What they discovered was that Adams had lied about where he found the cash.

He was captured on CCTV picking up the money, leaving the shop and getting into his car, and then charged with lying in a police report — resulting in his fine.

"I accept the fine. I'm very sorry about this whole thing," Adams told the Chicago Tribune. He was never offered a reward for returning the cash.
