Ever since sms came along, I've seen it have some devastating effects, as well as some good ones.

Here in Thailand, where people like to be non-confrontational and avoid 'absolutes', sms seems to be very popular for all sorts of communication. Since living here, I've sometimes been guilty of using sms for what I believe is wrong.

But, really, should sms be used instead of a simple courtesy phone call or actual face to face dialog?

Are there some things that should be 'out of bounds' in sms?

Whats your view?

i actually like sms. it's less intrusive, especially if the question or subject is answerable by a simple yes or no or okay whatever. i hate getting phone calls (especially work-related). lol.

so... i am assuming that you voted it acceptable to end a relationship by sms? hmmm....brutal

the old fashion way of avoiding someone was to break up by a paper note.

then it was break up on answering machine.

next.. break up by email.

now sms

I think people will be impersonal, cold void of human personality no matter what the technology is around. You can't really blame the technology the real issues are peoples coward-ness or chicken-ness. :? :? :(

It depends on ppl you are communicating with. Some normally use SMS, some don't and not even checking if they got any. So I say there is no exactly answer for this.

I use it to confirm/cancel an appointment, with ppl I regulary exchange SMS with (both work and non-work).

I use it to say sorry, to describe my feeling after fighting on MSN or in real to my beloved ones.

I don't use it for breaking up, yet.

i text all of the time.. But I don't use it for break-up or dinner cancellation. I think those big deal situations need a call or even face to face conmunication. but for in general stuff, i think a phone call would interrupt if the receiver is somehow in a situation which he/she can't answer it e.g. meeting, bathroom, whatsoever.. so sms is better.

FYI: Dtac got a promotion for sms -- a domestic message / 0.16 satang

maybe not straight out breaking up. lol. start with... "i think we should talk, let me know when'

but if you get one of those messages you know exactly what's coming so isn't it the same thing?

Does anyone else wake up after a night on the piss, check their phone and start cringing at the texts you sent the night before, can't remember sending or why you thought it would be a good idea to send them?

Predictive text can also be a killer when drunk...even when you close one eye to see the screen you don't notice the mistakes!!

I love SMS ....seriously.... I use it to send my thoughts to someone during the meeting :P something funny to my friends when sitting in McDonald's or when seeing a pretty clear blue sky...etc

I love writing love letters and SMS is just a mini version of it (to me)

I only hate it when someone esp. my staff text it 5 mins before ( or even after ) the meeting/event to say

'im sick cant come'

'my mom is sick'

'my cat is dead'

or

'my neighbor just saw a woman with 4 legs'

Seriously...only cowards do that !!!!!!!!!!

I believe i had started a similar thread big while ago about SMS and modern relationship. i can't bother going back looking.

SMS is perfect work as a Non-personal environment communication. Like a company sends announcement to multiple receiver employees or school/students. It is brief, quick, effective and convenient.

It is also perfect for sending short note for something small matters like if you are going to be late at meeting or if you are unable to pick up the phone and that you will give them a call later or even sending small thoughtful wishes.

However, SMS is unacceptable for anything at personal level. It is spineless and coward.

It takes too much time to be sending sms back and forth anyway. If you want to speak to me, call me, don't text me.
