Sometimes when i speak Thai to people they answer me in English! I suppose it means they've understood what i've said.

It also confuses people when i say that the Thai language menu is ok!

I dont understand why thai people are still so shocked when we speak some thai.

The other day I was extending my driving licenses, i was in a room with 15 Thais, we all had to complete a small parcours with reaction and eye tests. When it was my turn at the color wheel, the instructor pointed at the different colors and when i started "daeng... luang... khiaow.. daeng..." all 15 people immediately turned around and looked at me, I admit such the sudden mass attention makes me a bit uncomfortable lol

And he wasn't even charged farang price?

a) they don't expect to hear any thai word from you (foreigner)

they might not catch up what you just saying

c) Gep Tung (or Dung) is informal... unlike Kid Ngan (duey) krab/ka or check the bill, please.

d) last but not least... how clear you can pronounce or speak Thai words/ sentences

The French are rude and hate the Yanks right? not necessarily or at least I must not be on their hate list.

1st of all I want to make it clear that this is a life story event that happen while going to school in France. and I am not poking fun at the french or Yanks.

well if you were around me I come off clearly American. I love those stars n stripes I regularly even wear an American flag stick pen. I believe that communicating with another person in their language or even trying to is not only engaging but flattering. does this sound familiar "assimilation" anyway when I first arrived I would only communicate in English and trust me I am nicer to my cat than the treatment that I received. I'm sure dogs get better treatment as well.

well to make a long story short eventually for every service that I used I began to use my french occasionally I got ill treatment you will always have someone that is a jerk no matter what nationality but for the most part the rudeness disappeared.

when my American friends would visit we would go out and I would order in french. my US friends would communicate in English and get the same rough treatment and these waiters were young and they clearly new English. one time a restaurant even brought us deserts on the house. many a time I would get free food I would ask and the waiter would say complements of the manager etc. or my plate would appear to have more food on it than my American visitors.

i always get better treatment when i speak a local language or at least try.

am pretty fluent in spanish and i speak a little mandrin, bahasa, and kadazan.

plus the local girls just love it. is my best reason for learning a language or at least a little bit
