But I think when we were kids we had a different idea of entertainment - remember the little Jawas that kidnapped R2D2? And R2D2 was kind of stupid... but we accepted him. Later George introduced Ewoks and Yoda... He has a history of using cutesy 'Muppet' type characters for his younger audience. Jar Jar Binks was just his most annoying.
