Hazo
I've been doing a fair bit of research to live in Bangkok. I stumbled across this 100k word guide: http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/living.html It looks terribly old, but I did see references to 2006, so must only be a few years old. I will warn you, that page is more than harsh on the eyes. If anyone manages to get through it, would love to hear your thoughts on how reliable the information is. People either love him or hate him. He's not always right and even contradicts himself at times. I like his views and don't understand why the haters love to hate him SO much. It's almost a passion to hate him when it comes to some people. Regardless, his site is quite popular, especially his weekly column.

He's managed to build up quite a following over the years. I used to regularly read Mango Sauce (still there http://www.mangosauce.com/) which I found better and quite well written, but sadly it didn't last. Stickman has his own audience and he knows it and writes to that audience. He's been here a very long time. If you like his outlook, you can learn a lot form him. Personally, he doesn't appeal to me. As for the article, I always wished Stickman would drop that horrible black background. It makes it SO hard to read. There has been endless research done over the years to show that reversed type on a dark background severely hinders both reading and comprehension. But try reading long copy like that. Its almost impossible. Yeah I agree with that. It's taken me several days just to get to the transport section. I simply cannot read for long periods of time on a site like this. I look at websites all day long as part of my job, but I just can't read this. As for the content itself, I find it pretty well written. I think the information is pretty spot on (as a noob reading), but his style definitely is different to mine. You'd expect that though with the age difference. Just wanted to check the site wasn't some rambler that didn't know what he was talking about. I'll probably finish reading most of the articles on there, as I find they are preparing me quite well. Anyone else have any other similar type of guides they think would be helpful? 0 English_Bob
Stickman's site is the best - no doubt about it... I've been reading it for over 8 years. He does a weekly column about Thailand and Bangkok. He covers the nightlife and much more besides. His site warned me of several dangers and scams before I arrived. He gives good advice about work and accommodation, travel, visas and shopping. There's another site by The Big Mango guys... looks better than Stick's, but just isn't anywhere near as large. I don't find that he contradicts himself... but I find his opinions and tastes have changed over time... just as mine have over the past 8 years. 0 Hazo
He definitely has great advice on there. I still can't understand how people hate him. Perhaps I haven't read enough yet. 0 drlovelife8
Sickman and big mango are very entertaining, the stories can get a bit repetitive but his sight does loads more than that. The big mango site is hilariuos at times. Neither are to be taken as factual all the time but when they are right.... THEY REALLY ARE RIGHT
0 PeeMarc
I just finished reading Stickman long "living and working in Bangkok". **** that was tough going indeed. http://www.stickmanbangkok.com/living.html But anyway, as a resident of Bangkok, I would say that overall, Stickman has pretty much all the good advice and observations on that page you could possibly want. Beyond what he tells you there, you will need to actually be here. No amount of study or facts can possibly be the same as actually being here and seeing and experiencing for yourself. My only other advice I would give you is that you need to start getting to know and build good relationships with a good range of quality Thai people as soon as you get here. This take a lot of time and endless patience (sometimes years), but it will reward you in the long run. You can hang out with all the Westerners you like, but really, it is Thai people who can help you (or hinder you) the most with so many things. Good luck. Just finished reading that guide myself. Will definitely be making an effort to make Thai friends, after all it is Thailand. I feel I've got a basic understanding of what to expect after reading that page. I just didn't wan to arrive as an ignorant tourist. There is a diverse range of good info about living in Thailand and Bangkok on the stickman site. He has some insightful and knowledgable info to share. He also has his fair share of crap. I don't mind that he occasionally contradicts himself .....who doesn't? We have had this discussion before EB but what I find appalling is that he has grave and overt misgiving about the sex industry which expresses from time to time, yet his site is primarily concerned with updating info and by default promoting the farang orientated part of the sex industry!!! He advices which bars have the most beautiful women, their numbers, who has the best arse etc. He gives very specific info. I suspect that his site is used as primary source of updated info for a whole group of guys who plan their sex tours to thailand. He regularly publishes letters from guys who have the most appalling views of thai women and discuss activities which would make Khun Sue go postal & shoot every farang male. Granted that he generally makes brief critical comments in response to some of those letters. Dr Love's sexual politics seem stauchly feminist in comparison to some of those guys. Let's be frank, that part of the site helps to reinforce a narrow sterotype of thailand. It caters for some of the gutter types of men who flock to thailand and who really have highly appalling views of thai women. (Just read some of the contributions in the letters section). I don't believe in censorship but Stickman could expunge most of the focus on sexual services and it would still be a good site with lots of info. If he truely has the misgivings about the industry that he has expressed he could be a lot more critical of the industry.

While there is alot of detailed, good background info on his site...the seamy side kinda discolors the site as an objective reasource.... This site is obviously a "commerical product" and the "hit" numbers are what will buoy marketing the site to advertisers--- therefore the "hook" to pull in the sex tourist. Plus, I wonder about the kick-back amounts (THB) he may pull in by promoting the next hotest pub, hotel, or featured location... All that being said I would simply say "let the buyer beware" and not read tthe site as if it is "the Bible". ( for a different angle try the "Not Stickman" website-- BTW its author has a real hard-on for Stickman  )

Which would I guess be fairly normal for any site owner who depends on an income stream from advertisers. (Your view Rob?) The Not Stickman site is really weird, I have only looked at it a few times. The guy live in the Northeast, city along the Mekong somewhere; has a lighting business apparently. Anyway, he had (I thought) nice posts on living in Thailand outside of Bkk, smaller community, and alittle different culture... seem as though he could laugh at himself too.
