steevolution
proof positive that Thailand is getting soft: Purcell unfortunately is free to return to Australia....yet another great pic of Purcell being well Purcell!Australian freed from jail after pleading guilty to breaching Thai laws during street protests AN Australian arrested during violent street protests in Thailand is to be freed after pleading guilty to breaching the kingdom's emergency laws. Conor David Purcell, 30, will be released because he has already served his sentence of three months, reduced to six weeks because he admitted the charges, a court ruled. “After consideration of his action the court found that he is guilty but because he is a foreigner he may not have understood the law,†Judge Somchart Lertlikhitworakul said. Purcell will be taken from prison to an immigration facility and is expected to be deported to Australia. “I feel wonderful really as it is over,†he said after the hearing. He was arrested in April and charged with violating an emergency decree put in place by Thai authorities in response to violent two-month protests by the anti-government “Red Shirts†movement. The street rallies - which descended into several outbreaks of bloodshed and were broken up in a deadly army assault - left 91 people dead, mostly civilians, and nearly 1,900 injured. Unrest paralysed much of the capital in April and May, while militant demonstrators set dozens of buildings ablaze including the stock exchange and Central World department store after the crackdown. The court ruling follows a similar decision last month on Briton Jeff Savage, another foreigner involved in the protests. Thai authorities have used their emergency powers to arrest hundreds of suspects, including many top Red Shirts. Seventeen anti-government protest leaders denied terrorism charges on Monday and will stand trial. steevolution
weird ****: 1) the political anal-ysis on TF is as good as is available anywhere, with actually less dross to sift thru. 2) the strangest thing about the whole thing for me has been how people in the street seem to desperately want to forget that there was blood in the streets just a short while ago... what is real, what is not real... did it really happen... did i just see what i thought i saw... [questions i constantly ask myself in this here Big an Nasty BKK-- but then i never tire of the asking] 3) please don't close down the clubs. don't touch the clubs/clubbin! as my bank account has just now begun to recover to where i can once again start to hit em hard d8-D without those pumpin discos, Thai is just an insufferable shopping complex plopped down in the middle of a buffalo wallow (or at least it's eevolution in that direction is rapidly gaining speed). ps the night Seh Deng was shot, those taxis and tuktuks and milling motocys at the corner of Lumpini Park and as far as the eye could see, parked six deep in either direction... i don't believe they were there because they were being paid. they might be ignorant, but when has the rabble been anything but ignorant? you think the massacrees/mob at the Boston Massacre were sophisticated urbanites? you can call me StEevolution. pps a little bird told me Piant was first in line to offer Purcell a job... as an English teacher. he'll be working under the Dutch ex-junkie. file this under "faces only mothers (and rapacious bi-lingual school admins) can love"

English_Bob
1) We try to be succinct in our analysis - we call a spade a spade. And we call a violent pig-ignorant thug with a molotov cocktail and a red shirt... well, you get the picture. 2) Thais have an incredibly short collective memory - Thaksin was involved in scandal after scandal - Tak Bai, Krue Seh, luggage scanners, Fulham footbal club, war on drugs, assets concealment, bribing the judiciary, mishandling SARs and Bird Flu, Liverpool FC... any one of those should have finished him off. But Thais like to let go and move on. Ever broken up with a Thai girl REALLY badly... I mean, screaming and crying and hysterical hatred? And I can guarantee 3 months later, you got a phone call from her as though all is well. 3) Bank accounts HAVE begun to bounce back - but my 12 staff are trying to pay back loans they incurred when tips and service charge dropped to almost nothing... they're not really into the clubbing scene. The night Seh Daeng got shot? Of course there were thousands of taxis there - it was the ultimate spectacle - the championship of rubber-neckin'. And as an added bonus there was a chance of some good old fashioned gang violence. I doubt they sat around discussing the disadvantages of a coalition government. You can't get a taxi driver to do jack **** without some financial incentive - so maybe these guys weren't picking up brown envelopes that night, but they fully believe that if/when Uncle Thaksin comes back they're getting a payoff. Want to know who is to blame for the dead reds? The people who promised a peaceful demonstration and then brought in a lunatic general and his secret army. On that final day, if the Red Shirts had been sitting in front of Ratchaprasong stage, holding hands and singing songs, not one person would have died. LakeGeneve
4 more pages to go - keep them coming - i just can't wait! 10 more pages to 300 and then a party at your place Karnie! If we get to 500 beej throws a full spread party...... Expect the Dems to do very well in the 2nd round of District Elections today and the PT opportunists to get slammed. The interesting question is if New Politics can win a clutch of seats - only a couple seem possible. A couple more defections from PT to BMJ highlight yet again that the PT is not as strong electorally as some would say with a few PT MPs see the future (money) elsewhere , http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/politics/193452/jatuporn-slams-political-prostitutes, which is perhaps why the BMJ had another call from the grenade lobby at King Power with the M79 on Thursday night. (So common in BKK now that no TFers bother to comment, nor will they if another bomb goes off tonight after the election results). Another view is that the King Power explosion was a great excuse for the govt to ensure that the Emergency Decree in BKK is maintained and provides a good pre-election reminder for voters before today as to what was going on a few months ago. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/local/193302/king-power-blast-means-decree-stays

koolbreez
Thaksin is reported to be in a neigboring country, but not any of the ones bordering Thailand, so you can bet the money is flowing in buying votes. Most likely he is in Singapore, as the other countries don't want anything to do with him anymore. Cambodia is no longer his friend, China dissed him years ago, and Vietnam doesn't need his money. Not sure about Hong Kong, but I think I remember them turning on him recently...lolol. He is close by though, with his mercenaries still in operation. Seh Daing's were neutralized, but not Thaksin's. The outcome, and the aftermath is a little scary if you happen to be in the wrong place after the votes are tallied.

I was quite surprised to read that Thaksin was reportedly in RSA last week and allegedly had a pic with Mandela! (Have not seen it yet). Thankfully, no bombs two weeks ago on election night after the PT got absolutely slammed at the district elections. PT is in a real mess at the moment, which is a good thing hence the offer for cooperation with the govt from some quarters. Of course, there have been a few explosions since then and it seems CRES is expecting many more in the coming period given the deployment of soldiers and extra police in BKK. Dear Mr Saksith Saiyasombut, * There was no official meeting between Mr Thaksin and Mr Mandela. Mr Thaksin paid Mr Mandela a courtesy call when he was visiting the country. * We do not have photographs or documents as no business was discussed and the courtesy call was during Mr Mandela’s private time. The Foundation did not take any photographs. * Yes it was a private courtesy call. LakeGeneve
Couple of large explosions gone off in Pratunam over the past hour.... best avoid that area for a while if you're out. Three small explosions in 4 days last weekend and then this weekend gets off to a flying start. The theft of RPGs from Lopburi Army base 10 days ago means we can expect more to come. Explosion in Pratunam area, Post Online news 2/10/2010 at 10:40 AM A hand grenade exploded on the rooftop of a three-storey commercial building which houses Krung Thai Bank and a food shop at the mouth of Soi 32 on Phetchaburi road in Ratchathewi district late Friday night. Nobody was hurt. Pol Maj-Gen Sumeth Ruangsawat,, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police, Pol Maj-Gen Wichai Sangprapai, Pol Col Kittiphan Junthakan, Phayathai police chief, forensic police, and ordnance explosive disposal officers from the army's Ordnance Department rushed to the scene on receiving a report on the explosion which occurred at about 11.30pm. On the building's rooftop police recovered the lever and fragments of a grenade which had exploded and a grenade which failed to explode. Pol Maj-Gen Sumeth said the two Russian-made RDG-5 grenades were believed have been thrown from a building nearby, but only one of them exploded. The other grenade was destroyed by OED officers. Police suspected the grenade attack might be intended to create disturbance or motivated by personal conflict. It is becoming so common that people don't even bother to comment anymore.

LakeGeneve
When all this sh*t will stop?*sigh I thought Krispy Kreme was the answer...I guess I was wrong. Perhaps if there was more opportunity for Free Speech, there would be less motivation for tossing hand grenades. Free speech is a huge problem in Thailand but it has been for decades whether there was a military appointed govt or civilian one. Remember that it was not much better under Thaksin with all of the overt intimidation of the media and self imposed censorship. Ironically Thailand still has a freer press than say Singapore and Malaysia. Granted this govt has taken it to a whole different level but that primarily seems to be technology based given the huge number of web sites that are blocked (120K + - more than china). The govt has banned some red publications and radio stations. There is also an unheathy degree of imtimidation taking place but it is not some draconian overt environment given the sympathies of many state officials. One also has to recognise that some radio stations and publications have been basically inciting systemic acts of violence. Do the measures limiting freedom of speech contribute to a sense of unfairness , injustice and mariginalisation for many red supporters? Undoubtedly. However, I think bombs would still being thrown even if the status of freedom of the press and free speech was more heathy. Security officals would most likely argue that a more freerer press in the current political climate would result in more bombings given some of the violent rhectoric used by some. And we do have to acknoledge that freedom of asembly insofar as conducting peaceful rallies is still be respected as it should. Let's face it, there are some nasty people around hellbent on getting their way and they will readily engage in extreme violence. Sadly, there is an inability in this country to conduct meaningful debate whilst respecting basic rights and the govt is not making that process easier in this current period but they are still allowing people to express themselves to a large degree. PS. I thought Arjan Thitinan's Op Ed in the Post last week on the issue was a good read
LakeGeneve
Also, just to add on the issue of free speech for red supporters. When there are ugly incidents such as the one in Chiang Mai last year where red supporters from the 51 group violently stopped a gay parade from going ahead it does not show the leadership of this red group to be well versed in the principles of free speech or to have a sense of tolerance for other groups. That was a very sad day for your city Bruce, esp. given that Chiang Mai has been previously been renowed for its cultural diversity and pluralistic society. A reminder for those who are not aware fo what happened; http://www.bangkokpost.com/blogs/index.php/2009/02/24/rak-chiang-mai-51-a-pride-or-a-disgrace-?blog=
