Riding in Bangkok!!!

Question

I'm sure some of you know that I have this:

07022008102.jpg

But, I almost exclusively use one of these:

Yamaha+Mio+ZR+new+scooter+high+price.png

(Exactly like this one. Reg A Quarter to 7 if you see me let on.)

To get to work and back and around the city. To be honest, it makes getting about a breeze. Running and maintenance costs are pennies and a small fraction of what a big bike costs.

Apart from the near death experiences, I love riding around Bangkok.

Anyone else riding around Bangkok?

Anecdotes?

Funnily enough, I was watching a similar video this morning, where the guy was riding through BKK on a mountain bike. I was also bored then.

I like the look of that new Honda scooter, the PCX 125i. I have a Honda Phantom at the moment, but am thinking of buying one of these new scooters.

They claim economy of 50km/litre. Don't know what that is in mpg, but its a lot.

I was bored before I watched that clip...

Now I'm suicidal.

:)

I fell off the back of a motorcycle taxi on Phan Ngan with a box of records if that counts as an (admittedly non Bangkok) anecdote.

Yea some are a bit lively on the old throttle out there, one drove just as sat I down, luckily Im tall enough that I could stand up as he did. Otherwise, it wouldve been another farang eating dirt.

Hopefully you were ok...more importantly, hope the records were okay.lol

was holding the bag in front of me (100 vinyl size) and yes, he did the throttle thang, the bike moved forward (at velocity), I sort of stayed where I was, then gravity took over!! Pretty badly scraped back, but at least the tunes were ok!!

(and ok, the fact that it was leaving the Backyard after 36 hours of partying, buckets, spliffs and mushroom shakes maybe, just maybe, contributed to the fall)

I have several...

1) You know my bike is painted all over with the Union Jack flag? Well, the first day I had it done, I picked it up from the shop with a Thai friend of mine. He said, "Now everyone will know where you come from..."

We stopped at the first set of traffic lights and a group of girls shouted, "Woohoo! America!"

Since then it's happened dozens of times with America, France, Australia and (unbelievably yesterday) with Germany!

2) I got stopped by a policeman on a random check... everything was legit on my bike. Finally he got desperate and said, "Too many lights... 1000 baht."

3) Two days ago I hit a farang guy with my bike.... I was riding down my soi and people were chucking water about. Some guy ran into the road to throw a bucketful at some girl. I was riding behind him, but then he did a U-turn and ran back into my path. I braked and skidded. By the time I hit him I wasn't going too fast but he gave me an astounded look and a bit of verbal. I flipped up my visor and said, "You're playing in the ******* road like you're 15 years old! Get out of the ******* way."

And then I rode through him... I hate Songkran in Bangkok.

This is why I don't carry weapons on my bike - I know I'd have used them by now.

I had 2 bikes up to last month.

one offroad 2 stroke suzuki rmx 250 that i just sold because it has no place in BKK

and my 200cc phantom

Traveled Thailand UP, DOWN and ACROSS without an incident until yesterday.

I can't believe the drunk **** hit me and I had to pay him. Could have been worse than 1500 baht I guess.

Next on the menu is 600cc steed. Then I can sell the phantom and have a long trip to cambodia.

It's a nice looking bike that's for sure. 72,000 I think?

The mileage probably wouldn't be quite that high given the Bangkok urban cycle. Running/maintenance costs might be higher than say a Mio, Fino, Click or the Suzuki blade thing, which would filter easier too.

Though I do prefer the Nouvo Elegance 135. (About 55,000?)

The Honda has this "stop start" system, whereby the engine switches itself off if the bike is stopped for more than a certain time (3 secs I think).

It is supposed to increase fuel economy, but it could prove to be a real pain, especially somewhere like BKK. I have read though, that it is not too bad, once you get used to it.

Also, I think that the wider tyres would be safer on the potholed roads of Samui.

I see so many people come off those Clicks and Waves, due to the bad roads.

Am gonna hire one soon, and see how it feels.

I love to ride (motorbike!) in BKK long time ago when I first was practicing on my dad motor-bike, I had uncountable (not so serious) accident . If I will buy one I prefer a big motor-bike with big wheels and big engine.

Even I didn't own one but every time I was away on islands, I have always rent it to explore around. Very much fun, indeed esp when the wind with fresh air touch on my face.

of the many accidents I have had on bikes in Thailand, the most colorful were when drunk slammed into me from behind and lay there in a puddle of mess. The cops saw it. everybody saw it. then the cops explained he was drunk. the final logic was that since he was drunk we all finally agreed that you can't get money from a drunk so just pay to fix your stuff yourself.

Another time I got T-boned by a mom with her son on their honda dream. I was on my 125 dirtbike in CNX. She was passing in the oncoming traffic through a red light and I was in the green when she hit me from the right directly into my ankle and leg. we all agreed that since I was rich and she was not it was an opportunity for me to "make merit" and show my magnanimous ness by paying for both our fixes.

This was my previous bike

Clip_16.jpg

Honda X4 1300

I left it parked in the office car park one day; returned to it at 5pm to find that the front brake calipers had been stolen. Luckily, I noticed the dripping brake fluid before I set off.

The security have no responsilibty for the vehicles left in their care; but some negotiations with the building owners got 50% of the replacement cost of 13,500 baht for the set.

I can't believe that no git noticed someone removing my brakes!!!

I am kicking around the idea of getting a Suzuki GSXR-750 as i have had several in the past, but Suzuki doesn't sell that model here. Anyone know how I can get one here?

Thanks.

This was mine a few years ago.

Clip_13.jpg

Great fun; weighed next to nothing and very quick. I paid 75,000 at a shop off Lat Prao.

You can find them; you just have to keep an eye out. Look on mocyc dot com for bike classifieds (be wary of course) and Craigs List where many farang post their ads.

EDIT: Though, if you're loaded, go to Red Baron on Ramkamhaeng. Lots of late/new imports between 300 - 700,000.

I really want a scooter in bkk but i'm ashamed to say i have never ridden a motorcycle of any kind in my life

Anyone wanna show me the basics?

Sure... let me know when. I've been riding here for 6 years and never had a 'real' accident.

Plus there's a perfect place for learning right near my apartment - The Tobacco Monopoly - quiet, private roads.

Here's a thought.

Anyone up for a bit of a ride around Bangkok? Sukhumvit area, Rama 1, Siam Square, Rama 4 and all round there? Maybe pop in somewhere for a beer or two? (Not that I know many places at all.)

Maybe a Sunday after or one evening?

Mios, Finos, Clicks, Nouvos and etc?

I'll post an event if there's any interest.

I am all in for that. let me at least buy a scooter first...quick...need some advice on a hot scooter...don't know **** about scooters...

just until I can find the GSXR I want.

That would be a lot of fun.
