Why Drink Water?

Water intoxification is rare except among endurance athletes such as marathon runners.

And it's not the water itself that kills you, it's the flushing out of too much sodium which your body needs.

The sodium balance is the initiating factor, but is the resulting cell damage, especially in the brain, that proves fatal.

This is why there are so many 'specialist' drinks for athletes containing electrolytes to maintain the sodium balance.

But it was actually quite a common occurrence during the height of the rave scene due to poor harm reduction information.

Both the recent fatalities I am aware of were from outside the athletics world.

My, aren't we being pedantic. That's like saying, its not the cigarettes that killed him, it was the cancer. Yes, true, but are you going to go around saying smoking can't kill you?

One death I read about had to do with a water drinking contest.

If the others were part of the drug world, well, what do you expect.

wasn't actually being pedantic Mr Sensitive, was just adding to what you had said.

And yes, water drinking contest (if I remember rightly there was a catchphrase for the contest - 'hold your wee for a wii') is one of the 2 I am aware of. And yes, the other was drugs related (and with better harm reduction info would have been easily avoidable) though the 'what do you expect' comment perhaps balances my pedanticism with its stereotyping and patronising tone.

been drinking too much water Nicky??

Too much water makes the brain swell; When the brain swells, it is inside a bony box so has nowhere to go. The pressure increases in the skull and you may get a headache. As the brain is squeezed it compresses vital regions regulating functions such as breathing."

Eventually these functions will be impaired and you are likely to stop breathing and die. Warning signs included confusion and headaches.

Those warning signs are a little ambiguous - sounds like a normal Saturday night to me...

are you sure about these syptoms? these are the syptoms for de-hydration. as nicky says, if your urine is yellow and smelly, you need more water.

if you have a dull throbbibg headache and you are not sweating, you need water. an average person in a normal climate needs to drink at least 2 litres of water a day.if its hot and humid, make it 4 litres.

its best to have 1 glass (at least) with your meals cos it helps digestion. coffee and tea stops the body from processing water because of the caffeine in it. de-caf isn't as bad.

drinking soft drink just loads you up with sugar and don't mention diet soft drinks thanks. if you believe diet drinks are good for you, you probably believe smoking is good for you also.

Tea has caffeine which in small doses isn't harmful but also other ingredients which are good for health and it also counts towards the recommended daily water intake which is 8 glasses.

Beverages containing caffeine should not be considered part of your daily water, since caffeine is a diuretic and will actually flush fluids from your system, but do they flush as much as the drink itself contains? There's no clear answer to that.

think your 5'2" just dropped a little.

Yes.

At the onset of this condition fluid outside the cells has an excessively low amount of solutes (such as sodium and other electrolytes) in comparison to that inside the cells, the fluid shifts through osmosis into the cells in order to balance its concentration. This causes the cells to swell. In the brain this swelling increases intracranial pressure (ICP). It is this increase in pressure which leads to the first observable symptoms of water intoxication: headache, personality changes, changes in behavior, confusion, irritability, and drowsiness. These are sometimes followed by difficulty breathing during exertion, muscle weakness, twitching, or cramping, nausea, vomiting, thirst, and a dulled ability to perceive and interpret sensory information. As the condition persists papillary and vital signs may result including bradycardia and widened pulse pressure. The cells in the brain may swell to the point where blood flow is interrupted resulting in cerebral edema. Swelled brain cells may also apply pressure to the brain stem causing central nervous system dysfunction. Both cerebral edema and interference with the central nervous system are dangerous and could result in seizures, brain damage, coma, or even death.

(this from good ole wiki)

In fact, as I flippantly pointed out earlier, many of the symptoms of water intoxification are similar to alchol intoxification.

Bit of a generalisation there. Yellow and smelly CAN signal dehydration but also other things such as your body offloading excess vitamin c.

The latest new conventional wisdom from the field of sports medicine holds that you should drink daily half your body weight in ounces of water. That is, if you weigh 120 pounds, you should drink 60 ounces of water every day, or seven and a half cups. If you weigh 180 pounds, you should drink 90 ounces of water daily, or eleven cups and another few sips.

Outwith sports medicine, government health recommendations are usually 1.2 litres in a climate like the UK and anything up to the 4 litres you mentioned in a very hot climate. And again, like alcohol, many factors can influence this need, from body mass, to altitude to pregnancy.

I am amazed people don't drink it. It is the ultimate fat burner and I actually feel a bit ill if I don't drink loads. It is more or less 80% of what I drink.

It is the single most important ingredient to life.

Don't eat survive for weeks.

Don't ingest water, die within days.

Well... you can survive pretty well if you eat soup...

For once you have missed soemthing.

Soup allows ingestion of water. You can survive but will look a bit ill. Soup is 90% water anyway.

No woman no cry, no water you die

Check the thread... the question is do we need to drink 2.5 litres of water.

And my answer was (and still is) that we can get most of that from our food.

not really bob. just about everything you read suggests you need to drink water on top of everything else. and in hot and humid places, you need extra salt and extra water.

Although the symptoms are similar in both dehydration and Hyponatremia, there are some differences. With hyponatremia (too much water) the person is more likely to vomit repeatedly than someone suffering from dehydration is. Seizures are more likely also.

depending on foodstuffs (another variable) the average amount of water we get from food is around 1 litre a day, so depending on the other variables (climate, body mass etc) there still is a need for some topping up of fluids.

But you'd be pretty close to bang on back in the UK Dave, with about a 1.2 litre requirement daily here.

Tips to Prevent Hyponatremia

(1) Switch to a saltier diet in anticipation of High Endurance activity, whether it’s running a marathon or a long road march.

(2) Eat pretzels over the last half of a long race or march. HUH???? HOW DO YOU CARRY PRETZELS IN A RACE???????

(3) Favor sport drinks over water and drink 5 to 8 ounces every 15 to 20 minutes.

(4) Young, healthy and very physically active people need salt. THE EXCEPTIONS: those with high blood pressures or kidney disease.

(5) Replace the fluid you’re losing while you exercise. The best thing to drink if you want to work hard and recover quickly isn’t water. It’s a sport drink that can replenish Electrolytes and Nutrients lost through sweat.
