101 Great Things about Living in Thailand

Question

While I have sometimes found the forum about the protests etc interesting and sometimes informative, I am getting really tired and bored with so much negative **** about the country and people, and sometimes the hatred in words expressed.... not just in forums... but in day to day life here too.

Sure, I have been as guilty of being negative myself and saying things from my own anger or frustration that I later come to regret.

I also just had a good buddy, who has lived here 6 years, get so affected by all the **** lately that he has left and gone back to him home country.

In the end, being negative just draws more negative and focuses attention away for the many, many wonderful things this country and people have. As an expat living here and in Asia for many years, Thailand is my home of choice. I still cant think of a better country (for me) in which to live.

So please, if you have something good to say about living here, or a story to tell, put it here. (or are dramatic and negative forums more popular?

1. Where else would I find better or more delicious food than Thailand? If I left, I would miss all my favourite dishes that I can get anywhere on the street or small restaurant.

2. I love the Thai sense of sanuk and people so easy to laugh.

3. If you live here for a while, you cannot avoid being touched deeply by 'nam jai' at some unexpected times.

I could go on and fill 101 reasons myself but...

whats yours?

- 7-11 everywhere and all the time. No need to run out of anything... ever."

And if you get tired of 7-11, walk to the Family Mart next door. Or the D-Mart next to that or the Fresh Mart down the street. Why not try the 108 Shop or the V.Shop around the corner. Don't like those? Go to the local Lotus Express. And finally, if all else fails, try the Mini Big C :!:

Something about "Mini" and Big C being together in the same name

- 150 baht seats in plush cinemas inside every shopping mall.

- No political correctness... "Hey Fatty... here's your lunch."

- 7-11 everywhere and all the time. No need to run out of anything... ever.

- Laundry services.

- Traffic jam? No problem, just let me ride on the pavement for a while.

- Phone numbers -

"Hi, excuse me... I don't know you. I've never spoken to you before. But you look quite hot. Can I have your number please?"

"Sure... it's 08..."

That last one raised a tickle............ Hard to find a good girl, but who cares?

Pedophile living heavens.

Not as much as it used to be though. There have been huge strides forward in the last 10-15 years. The UK police have trained the RTP, NGOs have more assistance and awareness programmes than ever before, and legislation in the home countries of tourists who visit Thailand, such as the UK Sexual Offences Act 2003, means that perpetrators can be prosecuted in their home country if identified as having committed offences while on 'holiday'.

Of course, one child sex offence is one too many, but we will never attain that ideal state. And the majority of children abused in Thailand now have either been trafficked from neighbouring countries or from the hill tribes, so it means the NGOs and RTP know what areas to target.

And to a great extent, the ex pat communities in areas renowned for child sex 'tourism' are providing the first source of information on suspicious activity.

So, if you look at the situation in, say, 1995, and the situation now, perhaps the term 'heaven' or even 'haven' is no longer as appropriate.
