primetime
Today Starbucks announced that they will cut artificial trans fats from food and drinks in its continental US, Alaska, and Canada stores by the end of the year. Obviously they can stop harming the health of Americans and Canadians, so why don't they help out other citizens of the world? The answer is undoubtedly the all mighty buck, baht, euro, etc.
khun_lung
Their coffee isn't that good and overpriced in Thailand. I prefer Black Canyon which is a local chain.

The Punisher
Isn't any company that advertises that they are caring because a small percerntage of their coffee is 'guaranteed fair trade' actually saying that the other vast majority of their coffee is not fair trade? (and quite possibly still from plantations in Africa that uses child slave labour)
JackyB
Starbucks doesn't sell coffee.

frits
and at Starbucks in BKK they are playing Christmas songs in the beginning of november. But in favour I can say of them: some of their seats are comfortable. You can relax and read a newspaper.

koolbreez
It's interesting that starbucks imports all there coffee. Thai coffee beans are to good for them, They refuse to pay a fair market price, so they continue to increase their buying from Africa where they continue to rip off the farmer. HappyJellyfish
Hey, isn't SB a great example of the infatuation between consumerism & franchise capitalism: Stupidity & Greed. I don't drink coffe nor eat donuts so the only thing I know about SB is that in NYC they actually charged rescue workers, voluteers and victims big $$$ for drinking water on 9/11/'01. After a huge public outcry the SB boss in Seattle sent the NYFD a refund check for US$178.- (onehundredseventyeight USD and not a cent more). HappyJellyfish
Yeah crazy place where the value of the cup is more than the actual coffea they put in it...That is so interesting because Starbucks in Europe does definately not signal those values and most people try not to reveal that they actually go there now and then... I guess it is the same with Mcdonalds...I mean my humble US-prejudiced angle on things definately took a little turn when I tried the Diner version of a Cheeseburger with homemade fries and what else you have...yummi Yeah it's some kind of brand-name mass hysteria. Dangerous stuff. Same kind of mentaly that will blindly follow the swastika and the hammer & sickle. Best to patronize street vendors and hole-in-the-wall places. I know one here that is hard to find, has no sign, does not advertise and is always full of happy guests munching on their inexpensive (THB 40-150) homemade Thai-European food from 11.oo to 22.oo. Run by a German/Thai family. If one patronizes these globalized food & beverage chains, the $$$$ made go overseas, the local workers & the coffee growers get ruthlessly exploited, local family businesses bankrupted, and the rainforests denuded to make room for mono-culture (like f. i. in Brazil & Argentina where the beef for Hamburger chains comes from). MisterMatlock
Buy a coffee maker and save yourself some money. For the price of two large "iced coffees", you can buy yourself 30-40 cups at home. Also good for people like me that need enough caffeine to send the space shuttle into space.
shortyg
I am British so I bluddy well drink tea and lets not hear any more nonsense about this new damn fangled coffee stuff, blimey outrageous talk if i ever I heard it. baboe
I never drink coffee so I cannot comment on the quality of SB coffee... BUT... any place that charges $$$ for WiFi SUCKS majorly!!!! I really don't get it, offering free WiFi could attract more customers, why do they charge for it then??? Even I would go to SB if they would have free WiFi, even if I don't drink coffee. I'm sure I could find something else there to drink/eat.
inamorato25
OK, I'll be the odd man out here... I love Starbucks. Is their coffee the best on the planet? No. Is it the worst? Certainly not. I tend to drink either brewed coffee or just straight up espresso, and the espresso, at least, is as good as you'll get in any other chain. And although it's expensive, you can sit there and work on your computer for as long as you like and nobody busts your chops. 8) And for a guy who writes a lot, the combination of coffee, the subdued, earthy design trends, and the long hours with no hassle are nice. And if nothing else, I respect any company that can take a simple product like a cup of coffee and build an empire out of it. Yeah, capitalism!!
ling_dtua_khaao
I used to hate Starbucks, just a knee-jerk reaction to seeing them everywhere. I also hated their prices, but now in fact their prices are the same as other specialty coffee shops, at least here in Toronto, both chains and independents. So, I make my lattes at home more often, and screw all the shops. If you buy yourself even a $150 espresso/latte maker you can make some pretty decent drinks with a little learning, and you'll save yourself a bundle before long - then you can spend your hard-earned scratch on really top notch coffee/latte/espresso instead, if you've found a place you really like. Like Mike says, their coffee's certainly not the worst. I like that dark roast taste. Some prefer a different taste. Variety makes the world go round. I still hate the "grande" "vente" "talle" thing. Just call it small medium and large for **** sake. I still can't keep them straight and always just order the size in my language. If I ask for "medium" and the clerk replies, "grande?" (or whatever), I just repeat, "medium." Here's an old Onion story on Starbucks: http://www.theonion.com/content/node/28657 --Ling
