4. The name of the big black beetle 'meang da' (often seen in street stalls where they are cooked for eating), is also the Thai slang term for a 'pimp'. The reason is that after the male beetle copulates with the female, he then crawls on her back, hooks himself on with his claws, and she must carry him around everywhere.

18 Filthy rich, tax dodging, drug-dealer-executing fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra originally wanted to buy Fulham from conspiracy-theory-touting, passport-begging shopkeeper Mohammed Al Fayed. When THAT failed he tried to buy Liverpool FC, but was thwarted when people realised he wanted to use Thai taxpayers' money.

He then bought, second rate, not-quite-United Manchester City.

23. The Thai slang word for foreigner "farang" is an abbreviation of "farangset" which represents the thai pronunciation of Francais, French for French. The first Western foreigners arriving in Thailand were French coming over from Cambodia and Vietnam. Asked where they are from they responded "francais". Now every white foreigner here is "French"...

The traditional 'wai' originated in India and travelled to Thailand around the same time as Buddhism. Prior to this, most Thais greeted each other by creating a 'v' symbol with the first two fingers, raising it to the mouth then wiggling a tongue through it.
