watched "hunger" last night .... based on the hunger strike in maze prison northern ireland in 1981 .... what a f**king brutal and depressing movie. definitely not one for light entertainment !!!

Yeah, watched this at the weekend too mate. It is brutal AND depressing, but the acting and direction are excellent, and I think it really captures the mood of the time...

I once got a really stiff kicking when I was 16 for wearing a Bobby Sands badge from 3 neanderthals with Red Hand badges...

bast*rds

hmmmm ... it wasn't as good as i expected it to be .... and i reckon u would need to know some of the background to enjoy/understand the movie !!

anyway grim f**king times ... let's hope we're never back there again !!!

Agree totally - it's one of those movies that probably has a very narrow target audience, though sure all the ex-NORAID idiots in the states will troop along like the good little An Phoblacht readers they are.

But I don't think, despite the recent actions of some real minority a**holes, that things will ever be that bad again. Belfast is even on the current Lonely Planet Top 5 cities to see list!!

It is truly a changed place. I played a few gigs over in NI in the 90's and the gigs themselves were oases of non-bigotry (perhaps methinks E should have been given to all parties in the Troubles and we would have had peace earlier) but we were always hesitant to go trawling off to afterparties the way we would have on the mainland. Did attend a farm party near Portrush where a couple of Republican heavies turned up to collect 'permission' money!!!

The Provo's (and Loyalist's) war on drugs was a joke. What it actually meant was 'war on drugs that we haven't supplied'.

I can remember this guy Oisin from the NI scene who used to score his E's in Scotland. He was always paranoid going home cos known 'faces' from the rave scene were regularly stopped and searched...

But respect to all the old NI scene for keeping it going despite the threats and provocation!!

Slumdog Millionaire.

Not sure if it deserved all the Oscars it got though but have not yet watched the other contenders.

Agreed. It was a great movie, but surely there had to have been something better...who knows? I haven't been following the movie scene at all.

1. Twilight - When you can live forever what do you live for?

2. Slumdog Millionaire - Who wants to be a millionaire?

3. Milk - His life changed history. His courage changed lives.

4. The Reader - Behind the mystery lies a truth that will make you question everything you know.

5. Changeling - To find her son, she did what no one else dared.

I think the whole attraction of Slumdog was the feelgood factor at a time when the world is in a pretty low place. It cannot compare to Oscar winning films like The Departed, but it hit the mark bang on for raising people's feelings when the credit crunch is biting...

actually i think it compares favorably to a lot of best-picture winners, and certainly there was nothing else this year that was so clearly better it should have won instead.

i liked the departed just fine but it is a rather garish film with a convoluted plot (inherited from "Infernal Affairs," of which it is more or less a remake) and is most definitely NOT in a different class of filmmaking altogether from Slumdog Millionaire. i haven't seen ALL the best picture contenders but from what i've seen it was deserved.

I think I have just found my new favourite movie.

The story of two convicts sent to a prison in French Guiana and their desperate attempts to escape. Starring Dustin Hoffman and the late Steve McQueen, this tale is a sad story that got me really feeling for the main characters. Excellent acting, great scenery, I don't know how I have never seen this movie before...

I'm going to Carrefour to by a big steak, mushrooms and onions fried in olive oil, a baguette and a bottle of something with grapes in it and I'm watching it again....Brilliant!

SICKO by Michael Moore. it's a documentary, in fact. It's about American health care business. Very interesting and it's somewhat sad. Moore compares American health care system to universal care in Canada, the U.K. and France.

An insurance company in US says something like "we don't refuse to help people, we refuse payment".
