I hear so many bad things about them and also some good things about the people in BROWN. Nice to hear some opinions about the people in BROWN. The people in BROWN are exactly that.... people. Some are good, some are bad. I guess a lot depends on your POV. When I pay a 'bad' cop 200 baht for a 500 baht ticket... I'm pretty happy. When 'bad' cops beat the crap out of some yaba dealing scumbag... I'm pretty happy. When a 'good' cop refuse a bribe and sends me to the station... I'm pissed off. When 'bad' cops allow Santika to run without a proper entertainment license and indirectly cause the deaths of dozens of partygoers, I'm angry. When 'good' cops stop me selling alcohol on election days, I'm also angry. Still, I haven't been mugged, carjacked, burgled or conned during 7 years in Thailand, so somebody must be doing something right...
Admin_2
I just don't like how it's well known that they will turn a blind eye to a lot of things if it involves too much work or if they don't see any personal benefit coming out of it. For example, if someone tries to rob or pickpocket you, but you manage to escape without harm and loss, telling police would get you no where. They might say that you are lucky, say mai pben rai, and bid you farewell, but the criminal doesn't even get a slap on the wrist. EB does have a good point in that I rarely see any violence or robberies, though I'm not sure if its the police that are responsible or if it's just Thai culture. About criminals on the newspaper yes... p'CiaranM was right about it. The Nation, and Bangkok Post aren't newspapers for that kinda news.. If you see Thairath or Daily News or Kom Chad Luek everyday you could see blood shade, violence, robbery... any kinda criminals. However, nothing interest for expat life in Thailand. I remember once I came back from school, one police lost card games, so he killed a woman who was a winner... (she was a cop's wife) so horrble... grezzzy_greer
I really do think the Royal Thai Police do a good job overall - they get dreadful pay, and yet work in teribly uncomfortable conditions - I mean that - overall I have a great deal of respect for them. The police here do have a lot to contend with, and the reality is that police in many other places are not that much better than here - how about going into a major city airport and being beaten to death (a case of mistaken identity I might add) and this happens right in front of HUNDREDS of horrified onlookers - where were the police - why no proper security? Our guys are not better nor worse, they are humans, and they do what they can..

SweetieBabie
Old news, but worth a read Fat Thai Police Ordered to Reduce Weight BANGKOK, Thailand - Thai policemen with waistlines larger than 40 inches have been ordered to reduce their weight in order to look good when they direct traffic, the police department announced Tuesday. Recent medical examinations of 4,150 police officers in Bangkok found that 49 percent have high cholesterol and are overweight, which is "an obstacle" in directing traffic, said a statement from the Metropolitan Police Bureau. Eighty-eight of the overweight officers whose waistlines ranged between 40 and 49 inches were ordered to join the "Smart Police," a one-month weight-loss program. Participants will have to eat according to doctors' instructions and meet for daily exercise and evening meals at the Bangkok hospital sponsoring the program. Those who do not show progress will also undergo acupuncture, a Chinese medical practice believed to help cure many ills, including obesity. "We hope this will help create a better image of traffic police in the public's eyes," said police Maj. Gen. Montri Chamroon, explaining why the police force wants them to "look smart." It was not announced what would be done with officers who failed to reduce their girth. Source: Associated Press/AP Online
