Swine Flu or now called Influenza (H1N1) is caused by a novel flu virus that resulted from the re assortment of 4 viruses from pigs, humans and birds. There is no vaccine yet to protect humans from this virus. But there are existing and recommended medicines that are effective in treating this virus.

Up to this moment, there is a confirmed case each in Hong Kong and South Korea - the first in Asia. Thailand is still safe in swine flu.

So the Thai government made this whole political mess, allowed scam artists to practice at the airport and other important tourist destinations, and give foreign business owners no protection so that tourists wouldn't come and spread these viruses...GENIUS!

There are confirmed cases of the virus in Thailand to date, May 4, 2009.

I firmly believe Thailand is prepared for an outbreak of larger proportions.

The ISO standards here are far higher than Mexico as well and our medical capabilities here are highly superior to many countries.

It is best to practice safe travel, especially when in public places, use common sense; such as maintaining personal hygiene, keeping your hands clean and not traveling in taxis's (avoid close proximity to anyone coughing etc. )

There is no need for any panic or hysteria. Most people with healthy immune systems can overcome this virus without antiviral medications..

For a while there I wasn't sure what we would do without our resident Doctor!

Thanks, Mike! :D

Hey Doc!!! Welcome back stranger!! Hope all is well and that the beer remains chilled.

Now that the 'pandemic' seems to have peaked in its source country, I do think people are being awful swift to criticise the level of threat reported by the WHO, but had they downplayed it in the beginning, and it had turned out a serious pandemic with perhaps 2 or 3 million minimum fatalities, would that not have been a whole lot worst?

better safe than sorry...

No Swine flu but Thailand is a seriously dangerous country to visit ranking 7th in the world according to the daily Telegraph. Iraq and Afghanistan still retain the top spots.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/travelnews/3533883/20-of-the-worlds-most-dangerous-places.html

Also be aware that the FCO (Foreign and Commonwealth office) ranks Thailand as amongst 'Countries the FCO advises against all travel to parts of' along with Iraq and Afghanistan.

I must say I hadnt noticed this and will lock my car in the future when I park.

Damn that looks bad. We're mixed in with some pretty dangerous countries there. Puts things in perspective.

just don't park next to a gas truck if there are a bunch of Thai dudes in red shirts standing around it, and you should be alright.

yeah but if u read the report it is only related to certain areas in thailand .... and not tourist areas or destinations. let's face it if u use common sense thailand is a relatively safe place to travel to .... although many travellers here do seem to leave their common sense (if they ever had any) at immigration when they get here !!
