Admin_2
Reports are sketchy, but there was a shooting yesterday on Kao Sarn Road opposite the Burger King. There was a quarrel between a married couple, guy takes out a gun, others get involved, and now there are 3 dead Thais and one injured Swedish woman. If you see Thais in an altercation, STAY AWAY. Anyone hear about this one the news (channel 3 ran a sketchy report) that can provide more detail?

Admin_2
All of this is really putting things in perspective. I'm not leaving here anytime soon, but wondering what friends and family back home now think! Thailand (reportedly) is now more dangerous than both Nigeria and Pakistan! No way is it more dangerous than Nigeria, I spent a fair bit of time there and I wouldn't go to some areas for serious fear of death/mugging/shooting/stabbing, I'd go to every area of Thailand at any time of the day, yup lads, even Katoey's Paradise at 2:10am! Just a few days ago it was 7th! That seventh place ranking comes from late last year and it was ranked by the British paper the Telegraph. I'm not sure why the Telegraph thinks it's an expert on such matters. The Telegraph correspondent here is the same guy who wrote the story about a murder in Chiang Mai where allegedly an ethnic person broke a light bulb during his escape, and he labeled it a bizarre ritual cult murder. So that should tell you something about the quality of his reports, and the quality of the paper's "rankings". Thailand isn't as safe as some would have you believe. But more dangerous, or even as dangerous as Pakistan? You would have to be retarded to believe that.

What sort of sloppy criteria are they supposedly using to arrive at such a ranking? Just a bunch of guff to sell a few more papers to a readership which dreams of getting out of long English winter and hitting Thai beaches! Where does the UK rate in these stats? http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_percap-crime-murders-per-capita Thailand 63 million now I thought? Two things, the stats are a little out of date. SOURCE: Seventh United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems, covering the period 1998 - 2000 (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Centre for International Crime Prevention) Using crime stats as a comparative practice between multiple jurisdictions is fraught with danger. It can be very misleading given that domestic criminal definitions are not internationalyl standardised, the large degree of diff in professionalism of the criminal justice systems, quality of record keeping, the distinction between prevelance of crime as opposed to reporting being measured differently in diff jurisdictions, and social-cultural factors to name some issues. Total crime may be a more effective litmus test than murders as it goes more towards perceptions of dangers and actual potential exposure to criminal activity. Thailand would be 20th in absolute numbers using this test. http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri-crime-total-crimes And 47 per capita. Doesnt look so dangerous now eh? http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_percap-crime-total-crimes-per-capita But again the comparitive problems remain and the data is from a 2002 report. Stramash
If you see Thais in an altercation, STAY AWAY. A very sensible bit of advice Rob. I remember my first visit to Pha Ngan; it was a couple of days after the full moon and the majority of people had left the island. We'd come into Haad Riin for the ferry and decided to have something to eat before. Right outside the restuarant a young Thai couple started having a very loud argument and the bf started slapping the gf. I wanted to dive in as the white knight, but my gf held me back. 2 minutes later an Aussie guy jumped in instead and started hitting the bf.Seemingly from out of nowhere 4 other Thai guys appeared and kicked the living sh*t out of the Aussie. He was left with a broken arm and a fractured eye socket and I was left with a valuable lesson but without the pain! The Telegraph is full of crap (to summarise Lo) Thailand does not appear on any other 'danger' lists other than this. I don't think anyone who lives or has spent time in Thailand would ever place it in the same ball park as Pakistan, Sudan, Iraq, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Iraq or Afghanistan.(to name but a few) However, I would not rate these countries as prime tourist (or in fact tourist at all) destinations and cannot find any listing on this. But even removing non-tourist destinations, I would still be more hesitant about travel in Egypt or India than I would in Thailand.

It's not worth creating trouble with the thai/asian men, they are cowardly streaks of piss but they'll happily band together to outnumber a foreigner. That said, BKK is a town where if you look for trouble you will inevitably find it but if you go about your way and stay out of other peoples affairs you will be pretty safe at any time. I would prefer to take my chances in downtown BKK in the early hours of the morning than any major city in the US or UK, where you will almost certainly get some kind of ****. Only two times i got some **** in bkk, both occasions from dumb English tourists. I was minding my own business both times..
English_Bob
Phuket is the Wild West. I've been down here 3 months now. 4 separate farang murders. A farang who complained about party noise was shot in the leg and beaten with wooden sticks. A kid was shot in the head playing video games (tragic accident - video shop owner pulling the trigger ona gun he thought was empty. wtf?) My friend's boyfriend was shot 12 times by 2 Thais in February (while she was in the car with his 4 year old daughter). Outside their house at 4pm... The next door neighbours' door still has a bullet hole in it! Another friend and her farang boyfriend was carjacked by a 14 year old kid with a gun he stole from a farang English teacher (wtf again?). When a policeman rode by on a motorbike, the kid shot him twice! He was finally arrested and his biggest concern was if he would be on the news. And on Saturday at 6.30pm on my way home from work I saw a guy bashing another guy's head in with a rock in daylight at the side of a busy road while Thai people stopped their cars to watch! There was a 4 year old boy (somehow related) crying buckets of tears. I stepped in (reluctantly) and stopped the guy (no violence - only talking). The guy, weeping on the ground was mid 30's, possibly mentally retarded (who can tell after a guy's head has been bashed in?) His whole face and body was covered in blood. I truly believe if I hadn't stopped, the other guy would have killed him. Like I said... the Wild West, only worse! Oh and some bastard broke into my apartment (while I was sleeping!) and stole mine and Digital Cat's laptops. Local police did **** ALL of course
English_Bob
Oh and I also saw a bunch of 5 or 6 Thai guys beating three unconcious, naked bodies with four foot wooden poles on the main street in Chiang Mai at 9pm while 200 locals watched. (I didn't stop that time!)

Did the police later arrive and arrest the guy? I thought the taxi guys were the worst threat in Patong? Big credit to you for intervening Dave as it is so rare.
