Overprice ...

If you think Starbucks is expensive, let's try Baan Rai Coffee... It's local band and taste is local.

It's not about price, I'd support a local brand any day. The money (hopefully) doesn't make some fat rich foreigner fatter and richer and may even help the local coffee growers.

I'm pleased to support local brand kha.. many restuarant / cafe' have reasonable price. At least give good service.. but this place (I'm not talking about Ekkamai brance only na) isn't that good. They should have standard taste, do you know what i mean?

And Taxi from Suwannabumi, any body think it's quite pricy?

meter?

I don't think they turn meter on ja... 400 baht from there to the city is quite expensive.

How 'bout taxi in Bangkok city? They always thought I was a chinese tourist... asked me to pay 200 baht just MBK to Ratchada, insane!!!

When i arrive at the airport i just head straight for the Taxi booth outside, you tell them where you want to go, you get a ticket and then led to a registered taxi car and its metered everytime. They even have a complaints nmber if you are un-happy with the service..

So simple to use and ive never had to wait longer than 10 mins. Compare that to the Uk....Edinburgh airport to my home would cost at least 50 pounds (2500) baht and takes around 30 mins

Bangkok needs an IKEA, shops like home pro and SB furniture are REALLY taking the piss.

yeah but there are all those little rat-piss roadside stalls that sell furniture made from ACTUAL WOOD (not laminate). the ones that cell that cheap two-tone cyprus wood will even get their guy to custom-make stuff for dirt-cheap. great stuff if you like the look and don't mind the wood warping a little. design-wise it works for rough-hewn, rustic looking furniture.

never, ever EVER have anything built at homepro or those places. got talked into doing my desk there instead of using hte cheap isaan restaurant-ish cyprus. well, the desk fell apart. and that stupid desk cost as much as 3 bookshelves, a table, 2 night stands and a kitchen counter made from the cheap cyprus.

there are probably still a few custom furniture makers up by jatujak that work in hardwoods like teak if you want something fancy (i almost did teak bookshelves once. they would have been expensive but good value for teak; it's just that it was overkill for bookshelves. sadly, most of these guys are going out of business for lack of demand. people actually seem to LIKE that SB crap, even at the same price. God knows why.

Tell them to turn on the meter. If they don't just get out. Pretty soon they'll be saying "yes yes meter meter!" bcoz they don't want to wait another 30 minutes in line.

It's usually about 200 baht to central Bangkok plus tolls and the 50 baht airport charge, which is close to 400 baht total

I can't remember the last time I actually lined up at arrivals to catch a taxi, maybe over 10 yrs ago? I always go up to departure level where there are loads of taxis waiting that minute for a fare after dropping someone off. I'm in a taxi and out of the airport in no time, both at SBIA and DM.

No line, no 50 baht charge and I've never had any hassles about meter or not - the mere suggestion would mean they lose the fare to another taxi.I really do not understand why anyone who lives in BKK would go and waste time down at the chaos that is arrivals and wait in line for a taxi while getting hassled by touts.

Starbucks and bottled water. I can't figure out who the most intelligent person ever was - the guy who invented Starbucks and got people to pay 5 dollars for a cup of coffee, or the guy to put water in a bottle and got people to pay a dollar or more

you have a point in terms of countries where you can drink the tap water. which of course, you can do in Thailand if you enjoy diarrhea and sore throats. and typically those water filters at apartment buildings never get cleaned.

also, here it costs 13 baht for a big bottle. in the US bottled water is silly, but in Thailand it's decent value for money.

Using the Klong water are we?

One of the sad things is that a lot of money has been spent in the last 20 yrs to make most of Bangkok tap water potable and safe. Yet everyone still has established patterns of buying bottled water (guilty as charged).

Given that some 1 billion people in the world don't have access to drinking water it really is a crime that in countries with high quality tap water people still go and waste money & resources on drinking water in a bottle.

I live in Bangkok and I haven't got access to *high quality* drinking water. I drink bottled. Drink that **** at your own peril!

Try this for an experiment.

Put water out of the tap into your clothes iron. When it gets hot and nearly turns to steam does the water turn brown? Mine does! So I even use bottled water for ironing my clothes...Drink that...You gotta be crazy.

Mate, you must live in shitsville, suggest you move. Even a few of the slums have good clean water supply. It has been 10 years since I have seen brown water come out of a tap in any residence in BKK.

I do use tap water for the iron but then rarely do I put on a maid outfit and do ironing!

BTW, I didn't characterise BKK water as 'high quality', just potable. High quality was a ref to other - read '1st world' - countries and the perversity of buying bottled water in those places when many in the world have no potable water.

May be it's underground water? possibly?

Shitsville...Not quite. MinBuri.

The water does not come out of the tap brown, when I put it in my iron and it heats up, it goes brown. It's not the iron doing it, when I use bottled water it has NEVER happened!

All I'm saying is...as long as I live in Thailand I will never knowingly drink tap water.

Back to the OP.

Over priced...Cashew nuts...

whatever they've spent to make BKK tap water drinkable, it ain't there yet. i *do* use it to brush my teeth and fairly often have a sore throat from that. not a major health risk, but i tend to expect a higher standard of "potable and safe" from my drinking water.

Given that some 1 billion people in the world don't have access to drinking water it really is a crime that in countries with high quality tap water people still go and waste money & resources on drinking water in a bottle.

if they've spent lots of money on bkk tap water, they need to either spend more, or more wisely.

Nope, just dilapidated water pipes between waterworks and water-tap.

The groundwater level is beneath water pipes.

btw.. never drink tab water if it's chlorinated. It's a good sign for deficient piping and water treatment.

Sounds weird but seems like you've just rust in your tab water. Sorry, don't know how to explain it in english... it's just brown after ironing because most of the water is evaporated but you've still the same amount "rust".

I have always been doing that in the past years but guess what! recently there are some taxis on the 4th floor are getting sneakier and dont want to turn on meter anymore! Last time I flew back after beach trip and just hopped in a taxi on 4th then after took off from the airport after a while, there was no sign he would turn on a meter, i asked him whats up. he said well, its 300 baht to go to Sukhumvit! I told him to piss off and took me back to airport as i would no way paying that money! (yes im skint  ) he tried to argue its a normal price?? I guess my very dark skin at that time got him an idea that i came to BKK for the first time or something??

***So WHY is this happening***

We all agree on something, **** is getting more expensive to the point of being over priced beyond belief here, so whats the cause, who's to blame and where the **** is all of the money going?

I'm not a cheap Charlie by any stretch of the imagination but I'm starting to question the prices of almost EVERYTHING I buy, with the exception of street food, 7-11, public transport.

This trumped up economy is going to feel the world economic recession/depression like a massive back hand slap to the face from one of NANAs most un desirables without a doubt, which sucks for me as I've bought a new apartment over the past 12 months and could see it halved in value over night, though I wouldn't be overly bothered if I could see the pound at 70+ to the pound exchange again!

So WHY,WHO,and WHERE THE FUCKS IT ALL GOING?

Hookers

never overprice... since it's "pleasure"

maybe u need to do the price research

just because something is "pleasure" doesn't mean it can never be overpriced .... in fact i would have thought the more "pleasure" something/somebody gives the more likely it is to be overpriced !!!

allowing for usual market rules such as supply and demand etc !!!
