The BBC has seen the birth certificate of South African athlete Caster Semenya, which states that the new 800m world champion is female.

Ms Semanya, 18, has been told to take a gender test after several remarkable improvements in recent performances.

The case has provoked an angry reaction in South Africa, where many have said she has been unfairly treated.

A South African official said Ms Semenya almost snubbed her gold medal ceremony because of the test.

Visited by the BBC, Ms Semenya's mother told the BBC that the 18-year-old athlete is certainly female.

Rob, you'll better get ready for the next scammer attack. CLOSE THE PORTS!

And also there you can read this comment:

I've never met a Briton willing to take responsibility for the atrocities committed in the name of empire... but plenty of hypocrites!

I personally met nice South Africans!

I think we won't know the answer until the next 2-3 weeks.

The above poll has been set for 7 days, dunno if its possible to extend?

done.

:P

cool, thank you very a lot. the first news said, the result will be out in a week, but it seems to take longer

Why is there not a hermaphrodite , or intersexual, option in the poll?

It seems that it could be a more possible explanation/label than either male or female.

FIFA demand gender test for Liverpool?s Torres

Premiership footballer Fernando Torres has been asked to take a gender test to eliminate concerns he is a woman, according to football?s governing body FIFA.

FIFA says it demanded the test three weeks ago amid fears he should not be able to play in the all male? Premier League.

Michelle Platini, himself a suspected women, said the ?extremely complex, difficult? test results were not due for several weeks.

?It will take us a considerable amount of time to check if Mr, or Mrs, Torres does, or does not, have the male sexual reproductive organs.?

?This sort of test cannot be conducted quickly without medical specialists, there are several ways to cheat the traditional ?cup and cough? approach.?

Positive

Liverpool Football Club, said that they are ?completely sure? that Torres, 25, is a female but felt that she should be entitled to play in the all male league due to her popularity with team-mates Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard.

A source at Liverpool said, ?Jamie and Stevie have put in hours of hard work on the training ground with Torres and were both on the verge of securing a much sought after date?.

?We would not have signed Torres if she hadn?t been so pretty. She?s so graceful, with her flowing locks and smooth skin.?

?Some our fan base is made up of heterosexual males, and posters of Torres adorn the walls of many those fans?.

Withdrawal

FIFA stated: ?If it is proved that Torres is female, she will be withdrawn from all FIFA competitions and matches she was involved with will be forfeited to the opposition.?

The Spanish Foreign Minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, said ?we have no issues with Torres? gender. We may be filthy racists but you can?t accuse us of sexism?.

He added, ?We are however concerned that our Euro 2008 triumph might be written out of the history books because of a technicality?.

(definitely not from bbc.co.uk)

Someone did mention this earlier in the thread as the most likely explanation in the circumstances.....

I guess that s/he will have to run in her/his own event or will the IAAF make him/her alternate between mens and womens events?

Runner's gender mystery solvedJACQUELIN MAGNAY

September 11, 2009 .

WORLD champion 800 metre runner Caster Semenya has been revealed to have both male and female sexual organs, posing an ethical and political quandary for the world international athletics body, the IAAF, and South Africa.Extensive physical and emotional examinations of Semenya, 18, have shown the athlete is technically a hermaphrodite.

Medical reports indicate she has no ovaries, but rather has internal testes, producing amounts of testosterone considered abnormal for a woman. Late last night the IAAF was trying to contact Semenya to inform her of the medical results following exhaustive examinations involving blood tests, chromosome tests and a gynaecological exam she underwent after dominating the world titles in Berlin last month.

It is believed the IAAF wants to consider the results further before publishing details. One possibility is to allow Semenya to retain her gold medal, but award another gold medal to the second-placed athlete. After her stunning victory, Semenya was embroiled in worldwide controversy, but returned to South Africa as a hero. South African politicians condemned the scrutiny.

It is understood the IAAF had not been able to contact Semenya last night. Athletics South Africa president Leonard Chuene said he was unaware of the tests being completed.

Earlier the IAAF said it was likely Semenya would keep her medal because the case was not related to a drug matter. ''This is a medical issue and not a doping issue where she was deliberately cheating,'' said IAAF spokesman Nick Davies. ''These tests do not suggest any suspicion of deliberate misconduct but seek to assess the possibility of a potential medical condition which would give Semenya an unfair advantage.''

confused with this post LG, as BBC are still saying

'The testing process is unlikely to be concluded for two weeks but the IAAF - the governing body of world athletics - says Semenya can keep her medal.'

Who really knows at this stage. Time will tell.

It could be an OZ paper scoop just like last time, it could be a load of bollocks (internal!) or maybe the Beeb is being a bit more professional and waiting for the official announcement and also respecting his/her privacy by not publishing what could amount to speculation at this stage?

If it does end up being true I do sort of like the fact that it will challenge accepted notions of sex definitions in sports.

she/he should be elimiated from competition for sure. Looks like a guy, runs like a guy. It would be unfair to the lady's if a man competed in the same competition, guys are stronger, faster and more athlectic then women.

Which leads me to my next thought, being Thailand is pretty well known for transexuals/ ladyboys, that is, if a ladyboy went and got female organs and completed his sex change to a girl, how would someone feel if that person competed as a women in an athlectic competition? it would be unfair.
