Well when I pointed out to someone that he had been awarded the prize for being an American President, in office for six months or so who actually hadnt declared war on anyone.

He responded that it was more a consolation prize - rather like its award to Gorbachev - in that it represented an achievement for years of hard work driving your economy to the stage that it was in no position to invade anyone.

Anyway anything that keeps a US President concentrating on which color to paint the oval office or whether Starck bathroom ware or Neorest is much better than him wanting to know 'can I press this button to see what it will do?'

Whether or not he's actually achieving anything, at least he's trying, and, seeing as no one else is actually achieving anything either, he's probably the best of a bad bunch.

In the most politically corrupt, profit orientated society on earth, he still appears to be trying to hold to his values.

Good call.

I keep hearing he isn't doing anything but he at least has health care good or bad in the front of things not in the back. Also the auto industry is making cars that get great gas mileage and solar is surging. Repos are just trying desperately to make him look bad. He is also doing the go green thing even with the Mess Bush left him with. He has half repaired the US reputaion in the world and given hope to billions around the world. I'd say he has done much more then he is given credit for. Now would the Bush lovers like to enlighten us as to what Bush did ?

Here's one thing he's doing right...

U.S. President Barack Obama waves as he arrives at the 13th Annual National Dinner of the Human Right Campaign.

WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama pledged to end the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military in a speech Saturday, but acknowledged to a cheering crowd that the policy changes he promised on the campaign trail are not coming as quickly as they expected.

"I will end "don't ask-don't tell,'" Mr. Obama said at the annual dinner of the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-civil-rights advocacy group. Mr. Obama reaffirmed his commitment to end the ban, but did not give a timetable or the specifics that some activists have called for.

The law was passed by Congress in 1993 and signed by President Bill Clinton, who also promised to repeal the ban on homosexuals in the military but was blunted by opposition in the military and Congress.

you guys have fun with all the anti-Ameician demonizing and all that

Most politically corrupt, profit driven society

yet, Europe is in more debt from their greedy ventures

and then there is China...

Let's not forget Russia

OK now...blah blah blah...what the **** ever

You guys love your glass houses. Maybe that's why you invested so heavily in that LDR with Eastern Europe...lol

You left minded individuals built Obama up. Now you are complaining that he has been recognized by a left leaning global award committee.

The people have spoken and this is not the first time that the Nobel Committee has recognized persons for their efforts. They awarded that South African Apartheid fighter dude in the 60s. Took 35 plus years to complete that mission.

That's all for now.

He was nominated for this prize only a few weeks into his Presidency, it stinks.

Yes he was nominated a few weeks into his presidency BUT he is a BLACK man who is president of the United States Of America. That in itself deserves a Nobel Peace prize for the symbolism of peace and transformation. It was no ordinary man ,and one who is a great orator, to become who he is and his character and potential were known before the election began. You don't become the first Black president of a slave nation like the US with out having some **** together. I would imagine that the ones who nominated him are more then pleased at what he has done in but his first year and the course he is carving into the future. And then he pushed Bush out of there. Smells like victory to me !

It is also seen as political bias to the left. It is seen as self-congratulatory by the left.

Yes, the world is glad to finally be rid of Bush, but I think this hurts the credibility of the Nobel Committee.

you're aware that the "Nobel Committee" in the case of the Nobel Peace Prize is a panel chosen by... Norway's Parliament?

are you accusing the parliament of a socialist country of being left-leaning? brace yourself for the lawsuits.

BUT

there were 204 other nominations. most of the people eligible to nominate someone are politicos. i'm surprised he won, but not at all surprised he was nominated. incidentally, past nominees include Stalin, Mussolini, and Hitler. none of them won.

oh, and Hank Kissinger won for ending a war he was instrumental in escalating and widening (all those undetonated bombs in Laos and Cambodia? Hank's. to be fair to Hank though, there were NVA in Laos and Cambodia he was trying to hit, but bombing's a messy business).

Still agree with the assertion that Hank and co should be prosecuted when he was so pivatol in an administration which committed crimes under international law. Then, lied about it to the american people and ensured that Laos had more bombs dropped on it in a few years than all the bombs of the WWII combined. (Let us also not forget many of those bombing runs originated from airfields at Udon, Ubon and U Tapeo.) Oh and that little matter of the bombing of Cambodia creating fertile conditions for the Khmer Rouge to come to power.

At the very least he deserves a good spanking for the next few lifetimes.

just bear in mind that allegations that the CIA engineered Lon Nol's 1970 coup have NOT been proven, k?

I agree with LG on this one.

We kept China in business in their dealings with the Khmer Rouge. Supporting one Communist monstrosity in supplying another communist devil to harass a lesser nationalist communist demon.

But I guess that all depends on one's perspective.

f*cking insane.

from some perspectives, Kissinger as the guy who said "hey! let's stop propping up a Catholic administration in a Buddhist country and let 'em sort it out for themselves, now that we've bombed the region into a bloody pulp" deserved a Nobel Peace Prize.

and Gandhi didn't.

obviously these perspectives were prevalent on the Nobel Peace Prize committee during the years in question.
