The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2009 to US President

Barak Obama.

The Nobel Peace Prize is an international prize which is awarded annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee according to guidelines laid down in Alfred Nobel's will. The Peace Prize is one of five prizes that have been awarded annually since 1901 under the auspices of the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm for outstanding contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. Starting in 1969, a Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel has also been awarded.

Whereas the other prizes are awarded by specialist committees based in Sweden, the Peace Prize is awarded by a committee appointed by the Norwegian Storting. According to Nobel's will, the Peace Prize is to go to whoever "shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". The prize includes a medal, a personal diploma, and a large sum of prize money (currently 10 million Swedish crowns).

The Nobel Peace Prize has been called "the world's most prestigious prize". The Prize is awarded at a ceremony in the Oslo City Hall on December 10, the date on which Alfred Nobel died.

Someone's taken the piss, right fellas?! :?

I'd hoped they'd give it to Morgan Tsvangirai for sticking his neck out against Uncle Bob for over a decade and, after numerous attempts to let him sniff the daisies from below, being roughed up and dragged through the courts on trumped up charges, he's got the patience of a saint trying to work with that murderous c*nt together. Now if that doesn't deserve a Nobel Peace Prize than what does.

On the other hand they have given it to the war criminal Kissinger too, so it kinda figures.

To those who ask themselves why Obama got awarded:

http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laureates/2009/press.html

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future.

His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.

For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those attitudes for which Obama is now the world's leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama's appeal that "Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges."

I like how Obama was humble to say that he didn't deserve to be in the company of other winners.

This will, however, deepen his political mandate and influence on the world stage as a peace maker. This may come in handy with situations with Iran and North Korea.

It is also seen as political bias to the left. It is seen as self-congratulatory by the left.

Yes, the world is glad to finally be rid of Bush, but I think this hurts the credibility of the Nobel Committee.

Obama response:

?I knew it was going to be a busy day,? Mr. Axelrod said, ?and that was before I knew that the boss had won the Nobel Peace Prize.?

One questioner in the audience asked Mr. Axelrod to share the president?s initial, unvarnished reaction when he learned about winning the Nobel Prize. Mr. Axelrod said that the White House press secretary, Robert Gibbs, woke Mr. Obama with the news.

?What are you talking about?? Mr. Obama said, according to Mr. Axelrod. ?Is this a joke??
