Fun with a scammer

Sometimes when nigerians or senegalese people write to me, I reply hoping to start a dialogue with them in hopes of wasting their time so they don't actually scam someone. Usually, they never reply to my reply, but...I just got a reply!!

This one wasn't your typical scam letter about a huge bank account that someone wants to ship to your account for a share of the money...it was someone saying they are a Thai stuck in England, and they lost their wallet.

So I wanted to make a game on this thread. I'll show you what we've written so far, and whoever posts the best reply wins! I'll send the winning reply through to the scammer, and when "she" replies, I'll post that reply, and we do it again, comprende?

Here's the dialogue so far from beginning to end:

SCAMMER:

"Subject: I need your help

From: [email protected]

To: [email protected]

I will appreciate whatever you can afford to help me with and I'll Refund the money back to you as soon as i return. Please kindly help me to send the money through Western union with my details below.

Thanks so much

Your reply will be greatly appreciated.

Rob:

"Hello Kannika,

I'm really sorry to hear about your misplaced wallet! I've done that before and it can get annoying.

I have to apologize as I don't quite remember you through your name...did we meet in Chiang Mai?

Cheers,

Rob."

SCAMMER:

"Rob,

Yes we meet at Chiang Mai, Can you be of help to me?"

Rob:

"Yes, sure. But 3,000 USD is a lot for me right now...the economy is hurting.

Where are you now?"

SCAMMER:

"In England and i will appreciate any amount you can afford to loan me."

Rob??

Just a note of interest.

The flats at that address in Kensington sell for anything from 1 million GBP to over 2 million GBP PER FLAT!!!

http://www.houseprices.co.uk/bina-gardens-london-sw5/11/

And she has the postcode wrong; that address should end in 0LD not 0LA.

There is no hotel at that address...

but anyway...

Dear Kannika

Thanks for your reply. I can't exactly recall which event in Chiang Mai I could have met you at.

I do remember attending an event at the British Council there on Bumrungraj Road in Chiang Mai.. There were quite a few representatives of the Thai health sector. Could it have been there?

If we agree to arrange something, I am hesitant about using Western Union. However, I do have a friend who runs a business in that area of London. It's on Courtfield Road beside the Gloucester Road tube station. (not far from your hotel).

If I made an arrangement with him and was able to loan you say 1000 USD, could you collect the cash in person?

Rob

Dear Khannika

My memory isn't so good anymore, so I don't remember meeting you...

However, as you seem to be in real trouble, I would like to help you out.

I called my friend, Mr Tbuli Ngawen, who is a business man based in England. He has promised to provide you with a ticket to Bangkok and some spending money - about $1500. All you need to do is deliver a small package to me here in Bangkok.

I will meet you at Suvarnabhumi and give you the money in exchange for the package.

If this is acceptable, maybe you would be interested in doing a few similar trips for us?

Rob

That's true she is on facebook . let's add her in our friends list. Some people faked well. They spend time on preparing things. Yes, since she sounds so convincing, she should show a few pictures of "herself" so people will believe her more, send her money, what she told you might be real, Rob.

The way this scam works is that there is some Nigerian guy sitting in an internet cafe somewhere in England. He hacked into the e-mail account of this Thai woman and sends this message to everyone in her address book. One or two of her acquaintances (not close friends because her friends know that she is in Bangkok) might be foolish enough to believe the story and send some money. This scam was tried on a friend of mine here in Thailand twice recently. One of the e-mails purportedly came from his Thai doctor at Bumrungrad. Would a doctor at Bumrungrad really write to one of his patients asking for money? Unlikely.

Anyway, my proposed solution is to write a response to this person in Thai. If (s)he is a Nigerian, as I suspect is the case, then (s)he won't know what to make of this. (S)he'll probably write back and say, "My Thai reading glasses were stolen too, so please write again in English!"

Another possibility would be to ask them for a phone number in England where you can call them. They'll say that their mobile phone was stolen as well - and that there is no other number at which they can be reached. They don't want to talk to you because this would show that they are a big Nigerian guy rather than a little Thai woman.

In response:

Dear Kannika,

I have been in the same situation you are in 2 years ago.

I do remember you, and have contacted the Thai Embassy in London to vouch for you to get temporary travel documents. I have purchased you an airplane ticket to leave on Thai Airways on May 10th at 12:15am on flight TH203, the eariest date I could reserve a seat for you. Now If you could send me the address, and manager's name of your hotel, I will cover your hotel bills when you check out for your plane flight back to Thailand on the 10th. I can so understand your desire to return home to Thailand.

Please go to the Thai Embassy on the 7th, all your temporary documentation will be ready. You are lucky that you contacted me, as my Uncle is the Thai Ambassator in London, and he has agreed to process you with speed for your return to Thailand.

I will have a limo meet you at the airport on your return, and we can meet to have dinner. I'm always very willing to help a fellow Thai that is in need.

Yours truly.

Winnah Winnah, Chicken Dinnahhh!

I really liked EB's as well, but I think this one will get another reply for sure.

Also, "she" addressed the first email to herself and BCC'd me (and probably 100 others) on the same email. Definitely a scammer in my mind.

Just a word of caution. Kannika is a real person whose email address has been compromised. This has happened to other Thai friends of mine. So you shouldn't really be posting her name, email and personal details on a public forum like this when in all honesty, she probably doesn't know her account has been compromised.

EDIT: This thread is the second result in Google for "Kannika Bangsainoi" now.

"Her" reply to kool breeze's reply:

"Dear Rob,

Can you help with the funds? so i can pay the hotel i sent you the address in my first email.

Hope to read back from you soon"

I'm thinking we would have gotten a response to EB's post considering how quickly "she" sent this reply.

This thread is obviously about a spammer, and it's known that Kannika is not directly behind this.

People that freely give out their email address passwords to sites that will spam their friends and family won't learn the easy way. I don't know how many times I've told people NOT to share their email addys and passwords with any person or unkown company, yet I still get the same email and MSN spam almost everyday.

(It's not too late.)

Dear Kannika (?)

Of course, I'd be happy to help out with the hotel bill... please give me the details of their account and I will transfer the money directly into their account so Western Union don't get commission.

If you don't have the account details, please give me details of the hotel again and I will call the manager personally and pay over the phone by credit card.

I hope your nightmare is soon over.

Rob

It would make more sense to try and contact the person in question and let them know someone is corresponding using their email address, rather than posting it up here for all to see. People are referring to the spammer as "her" And someone said:

"Well she is on Facebook Rob, and there is a doctor of that name. Send her the money."

She's a doctor in a non-native-English-speaking country. If I were here, I wouldn't want this posted on a public forum like this with people addressing replies to "Kannika".
