SweetieBabie
Definitely stay away from Nana. Let's see... most TF events seem to be somewhere around: Gullivers (Soi 5) Absolute 7 (Soi 7/1) Bed Supperclub (Soi 11) Bully's Pub (right next to Soi Nana) Aura restaurant (Soi Nana) Elefin Coffee (Soi 1) Q Bar (Soi 11) yes... have wondered that myself. Some real low-end bars there... especially Gullivers, Bullys and the very bulldozer-able, sh*t hole Larry's Dive. Real class. well come on Neo and Marc .... post come classy events we can all sign up to !!! That's right.

I actually like Gullivers for it's restaurant portion...can fit a big group, seating is good, its close to the BTS, and the food is par for the course. Granted, some of their clients are not of the highest social strata... Larry's Dive could be a great place. It has the space and great food, but management doesn't seem to care at all about it. Staff really sucks and can't speak any English. Last time I went there, I ordered a cheeseburger and she came back with a freakin pasta dish!

I was just pointing out that although the Nana area gets slagged off, most of us eat drink and be merry there. So maybe it's not such a terrible area to stay in, as long as you don't bump into FLGlenn too often.

PJack
Hey everyone, I will be moving to Thailand next month for ½ a year to relax and enjoy the country & culture before starting my MBA back in the States.I want to find an apartment to lease. I?m wondering what some of the different areas are and the pros and cons about living there. I know no one can tell me that this or that place would be good for me, but I was hoping that I could get some insight about the different areas. I?ve heard a few areas (Phra Ka Nong, Nana, etc) but I don?t know where to start when it comes to choosing a neighborhood. For example, I know that Nana is near the center of the business/foreign community and there are a number of bars/restaurants there; but are there are a lot of opportunities to study Thai and meet Thai people and learn about the culture? What insight do I need before I choose a place? I will be staying anywhere from 3-6month, and wld like to find a balance between comfort/amenities and price and convenience. Thanks! if all you want is thai culture, muay thai, good food, some entertainment, and dont want to spend a fortune, go to Chiang Mai or Phuket. CM is about half the cost of living in Bangkok. They have plenty of muay thai shops and you cant escape the culture. There are loads of locals who would enjoy making friends.

Gfreeg
Thanks to everyone for the input. So...to summarize: Phra ka nong & Ari - good areas to live and in the 15k/Mo range. Stay away from Nana. Chang mai & the islands are all areas that I plan on visiting while in Thailand, however, BKK seems like a good place to base at. Someone also mentioned serviced apartments, this seems like a good option for the short-term visitor. However, i am a little concerned with the cost for someone staying up to 6 months... Does anyone have any experience/recommendations as for the serviced apts/areas and how much do studios/1bed rooms run in a place like that in BKK? I wld like to keep my costs under control. Thanks everyone!
Gfreeg
If you want to live in a nice area of Bangkok with a few whities and some nice Thai's I'd suggest either: Ari, Chidlom, Prom Pong, These are 3 really nice areas though quite up market you would be able to get an ok 1 bed for around 15,000.Don't f*cking stay anywhere near Nana. Agreed, but after looking in these places myself earlier this year expect to pay a little over 15000k and more like 18-22000, especially in Ari. Ratchada is also ok and runs parallel with the MRT. Ratchada had scores of nightlife and entertainment which is certainly more Thai style. Although you can find really nice apartments for good prices the streets are generally lower class and lack the warmth you would probably receive in the slightly more expensive areas above. However, you will pick up a nice big studio for 10,000 with a kitchen. You might have better luck searching for a service apartment if your staying for only 3-6 months. Condo leases tend start at a year with 2 months security deposit, 6 month leases can be obtained but expect to pay a little more rental. Hey, I know I'll pbly come across as a dumbass asking this of veteran BKK expats, but where is Ratchada? On the map I see Ratchadamri & Ratchadapisek, which one r u referring to? Thx! friendlyCat
another factor for Bkk is if you are willing to walk 10-12 minutes to get to the BTS or metro. You could also ride a motorcycle taxi....but the prices go down for places that are a bit further away. Again, for me it would depend on just how much I am going to be out and about every day in town....or not. The more you are in and out of your apartment, the more significant that extra 12 minute walk each way can become. It will keep you in good shape, but the walk is usually boring, dodging sidewalk craters, traffic, and motorcycles on the sidewalk. Anyway, you might look at upper Sukhumvit, around soi 35, or Ratchadaphisek Soi 7---10. There are places that meet your criteria. I think that many places want a one year lease, but you might make a deal for 6 months, paying a bit more if they have vacancies. Often negotiable. Guest SFJoseph108
I'm looking too and what I've been doing is going to a different neighborhood every day. So far I like Thong Lo - there are a lot of westerners there and the streets are lined with trees. It's quite nice and slightly less hectic. I avoid the tourist areas because people treat you very differently there. Walk around Nana and everyone assumes you're looking for a prostitute... I have met people paying 6,000. I'm staying next to service apartments starting at 60,000, so the range is wide and I have no idea what to spend, either.

Unfortunately rental prices in Thong Lo have shot up over 100% in the first quarter of 2011.......Property experts put this down to the recent rush of people moving into the area since CiaranM moved to On Nut.
