I would have to agree with pan - there has to be a little of rudness in people in all of the above nationalities...rudness seems to be an universal international thing....I'm not sure if one stands out more rude than the others...... I think I have come across all of these people too...

p.s. garfield - you didn't mention any nomadic tribes or sort...just kidding 8)

@PeeMarc

More about behaviour that is generally perceived as being impolite. such as never saying please or thankyou, pushing to the front of queues, gobbing on the sidewalk, not giving your seat to an oldster, and not addressing Ms Attwood as your majesty

Well on that note... chinese all the way.. I spent 2 years in HK and 1 year on the mainland.. no please or thank you, spitting in the street and spitting food onto the table cloth. I remember the adverts on TV with the government trying to instill good manners on the people before the start of the olympic games... hilarious stuff.

However, it is just the culture and the way it's been for thousands of years but i found it kinda gross from a western prospective. It's certainly not an Asian trait, Thailand's people in my honest opinion are far more respectful and well mannered than most western cultures, with politeness built into every spoken sentence.

edited: Just to add about China, i rarely encountered the aforementioned traits with the younger Chinese people in HK, some would even tell me how embarrassed and ashamed they felt about the behavior of the mainland in comparison.

I voted Chinese...amazing how almost every choice has one vote at this point!

Well let's face it the West will get a bad wrap from Thai people when you think of the average tourist waving the flag. Same as the average perception of Thailand in the west, that every female is a ***** looking for fat hubby..

complete bollox

I also think the Chinese - unless you count Thais who live and work in Patong (those guys are ******* crazy) - I didn't realise until I moved to Asia, the Chinese are oblivious to everyone around them, pushing, shoving, shouting, spitting and eating like pigs!!!

But I disagree that it's been this way for thousands of years. I am sure in the times of the Emperors there were rules of etiquette.

I believe this behaviour is descended from Mao's cultural revolution. Anyone who was perceived as educated, refined or bourgoise was executed or sent for re-education. In all 70 million people died in camps, on forced marches or from malnutrition.

This Chinese generation are descended from those times, when the only way to survive was to be a dirt eating pig farmer. And the way to show that was to be ill-mannered and disgusting.
