Where are Bangkok's Riskiest areas?

Lat Phrao 101: RISKIEST area

By The Nation

Published on November 30, 2009

Second on the list is Lat Phrao 107, followed by Soi Supapong, Sukhumvit 105 and Soi Phaholyothin 52, police say

The riskiest area in Bangkok is Soi Lat Phrao 101, according to a list compiled by the Metropolitan Police Bureau.

"We have prepared the list based on crime statistics, surroundings and tip-offs from people," Police spokesman Lt-General Pongsapat Pongcha-roen said yesterday.

Soi Lat Phrao 101 and a community there see the highest number of crimes compared with other areas in the capital.

Coming second on the list is Soi Lat Phrao 107.

"These two sois are under the jurisdiction of Lat Phrao Police Station," Pongsapat said.

To boost safety in the areas, Pongsapat said the station's patrolmen in collaboration with Bang Kapi District Office's city police would regularly conduct joint patrols there.

Close watch

"Also, closed-circuit security cameras will be installed at the mouth, in the middle of and at the end of the sois," Pongsapat said.

He added that taxi-motorcycle drivers and scrap workers in the areas would also be trained to watch over the areas and help police prevent crimes.

Ranked third on the list of Bangkok's riskiest areas is Soi Supapong.

Next are Soi Sukhumvit 105 (La Salle), Soi Phaholyothin 52, Sanam Luang, the Victory Monument, Soi Onnut 44, |Soi Chalermphrakiat 14 (connecting Soi Premrutai) and Ram-Intra Market respectively.

Earlier, police identified 5,365 areas in Bangkok as risky spots. "But after we introduced more safety measures in those areas, the number of crimes there have dropped," Pongsa-pat said.

He said police would continue to work hard in a bid to ensure public safety.

"Our crime-prevention measures will soon cover areas outside Bangkok too," Pong-sapat added.

These areas (101, 105 etc) are just like any other big city fringe area in the world where life seems to revolve around big shopping malls and little else. They are neither country feel nor inner city feel and are so spread out, with their 'new living' ghettos and are quite dysfunctional. Most of the crime seems to be from youth who have nothing to do, no interest in anything, not much opportunity or much motivation beyond getting drunk and/or drug f**ked. There is also a lot of crime from taxi drivers taking people (particularly young girls) home to these places at night.

That last sentence is a terrible thing. The content I mean, the sentence structure is fine. :D

"A high-flying businesswoman has been shot dead in what police believe is a killing motivated by conflicts related to her multi-million-baht business.

Sunatthi: Her killer lay in wait

Sunatthi Neungchamnong, head of the Prime Nature Group that runs several upscale real estate development projects, died from her injuries at hospital last night following the shooting in Prawet district in Bangkok.

Sunatthi - who was married to Pol Maj Gen Piyachart Neungchamnong, a former deputy city police chief - was shot about 5.20pm while driving her BMW on Soi 11 on Sukhaphiban 2 Road, Metropolitan Police Bureau 4 deputy chief Arnat Kledmani said.

She had just left Prime Nature Villa, one of her luxury housing projects, in Soi 11 and was about to reach the main road when she was shot.

She was shot in the chest and shoulder. A 38-calibre bullet was found in the woman's car, Pol Col Arnat said.

Witnesses said the gunman was waiting for Sunatthi to arrive. They said he fired about three times.

The gunman, in his 20s and about 170cm tall, wore a grey shirt and a cap, a witness said.

After shooting Sunatthi, the gunman hopped on to a motorcycle ridden by another man and the pair fled. The motorcycle was green and did not have a licence plate.

Sunatthi returned to Bangkok from another real estate construction site in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Hua Hin on Friday.

The most likely motive of the killing was probably conflicts related to her real estate business, police said.

After the shooting, a woman who identified herself as Sunatthi's secretary approached her car. She tried to retrieve belongings but was stopped by police, which sparked a quarrel.

Sunatthi's family and others involved in the business will be called in for questioning."

I have to say i'm certainly more anxious when walking past a group of coppers than a mob of young Thai men for instance..

That's how sad this f*cking city is.... The presence of police is actually more intimidating!!!

They need more of them plastic mannequin esq coppers that are scattered about BKK im presuming to slow traffic or maybe they are there to stop the pigeons from eating the farmers seeds thus affecting this years harvest, i quite like them really.

Funny that the area known as Happy Land is just near soi 107!

I guess it is not a coincidence that there are exactly 5,365 police stations, police posts and police traffic posts in Greater Bangkok!
