zeusbheld
It was interesting that with the number of redshirts I talked to, and shared food with, only one could tell me what Democracy was. The rest had no clue, but their leaders told them that was what they were there for, so they believed them, because they were thier leaders, and the ones that payed them to be their. Again, it was all about money plain, and simple. firstly, asking them to explain what "democracy" is, is over-intellectualizing, don't you think? no wait, *i* am the one who thinks too much, glad you set me straight on that. if you hadn't straightened me out with your luminous wisdom, i might still think that the right question, at least from the Thai gov't's point of view, is not what principle is at stake, nor how well the red rank and file understand what they're agitating for... but rather, how committed are the red rank to their cause, not how well they understand it, if at all. if the problem is exactly as you say, then the solution should equally plain and simple, right? after all, someone who can't articulate what they're angry about isn't angry, right? and of course, the vast majority are only angry about Takky's money! that's right, you explained that, sure enough. thanks for clearing that up. and of course there's absolutely, positively nothing in human nature that would make one expect people to support the side they've chosen, their 'team,' long after they've forgotten what they're supposed to be fighting for. thanks for clearing all of that up. The retoric spewed forth by well meaning journalists was just that, retoric that they heard from the stage. sorry, my bad. i didn't realize how much smarter you are than so many of the rest of the foreign press, who were obviously hoodwinked by the eloquent shysters on the stage! you alone, along with the rest of the brain trust known as the TF Stink Tank, saw through the bullshit that was spewed on the red stage to the truth. This is not a fight about equal rights. Equal rights will never happen in Thailand. The main religion will not allow that to ever happen. So again this is all about money, and one man's loss. this whole mess was catalyzed by one man and his money, ok. fine. i get that. but do you really think, now that the whole thing has been set in motion, that you solve the Takky problem and you've solved the whole thing? people won't be pissed off any more? Thai society won't be polarized to the point of having an innate potential for violence? hey, that approach worked for Rumsfeld. i'm sure history will vindicate *your* analysis the way it has already vindicated his 'analysis' of Iraq... I'm sure you have talked to your poor Thai friends, and they have explained to you in detail what this is all about. this may shock you but there actually are Thais out there with brains. no, seriously. even more shocking, not all of them are cheering the government on. not all reds are poor, illiterate or even fans of Takky. no need to find out what so many people are pissed off about (and yeah i'm sure they're *all* there for *exactly* the same reason, that's very true to human nature... But, have you ever asked them how much money they made if they went to the demonstrations? I think not....lolol. D'OH!!!! HOW DID I MISS THAT ONE??? it's a very important question, because the various factions that make up the reds obviously have no support at all beyond the people who actually went to the demonstrations hoping to get shot at, and certainly could never win an election without Takky paying for the votes... so Abhisit and co. have nothing to worry about. glad that's sorted. thanks! PS: you didn't need to add the self-congratulatory lolol at the end. smug arrogance shines through every word of your dumbing down of the situation just fine without it. zeusbheld
you're the poster boy for What Whitey Thinks, aren't you... put whitey in charge and he'd back catholics in vietnam. or convince himself (and yeah i do mean HIMself) that Iraq is a brief liberation away from being a model democracy. oh wait... if they hadn't been getting paid how many ppl would have spent 2 months on the bkk streets ?? oh wait ..... that many !!!! you should stick to beating the bishop instead of beating straw man. a better question would be, if they're not getting paid anymore, or never were out on the streets, or not even getting paid to vote at all, does that mean they'll vote for Abhisit instead of some batshit-crazy red leftover? koolbreez
That guy's so full of sh*t.....lololol. He tries so hard to downplay the outright buying of votes to the point of ligitimizing a bought election....lolol. Does he think for a moment that a certain faction is simply tired of the corruption, and will not ever again accept a bought election. He doesn't even bring to light that the demonstrations just happened to start the day after the courts found that Thaksin gained 1.4 billion US from corruption, and abuse of power, and took that money away from him. He fails to accept the fact that the current government tried to negotiate with the redshirts, but that was shot down by Thaksin because it did not include his exonoration. He also strongly thinks that Thaksin will go away by just ignoring him.....lolol. That has been proven many times to not work. Even to the point of Thaksin trying to start a war with Cambodia. Thaksin has no plans of going away, or he personally wouldn't have hired some of the top human rights lawyers in the world. The best course of action this current government can take is to bring Thaksin back to Thailand to face the remaining charges against him, especially the one dealing with the loans to Myanmar, and get him in prison where he belongs. Until that happens this government will never be allowed to govern, as has been happening while Thaksin is allowed to operate freely from countries with no extradition treaties with Thailand. Thaksin has done as much as he possibly can to disrupt, and discredit the current government, even to the point of ordering the killing of inocent people again. Again someone tries to make more out of this than the actual simplicity of the whole situation really is, going back to before the coup when the term "square face" became popular in the description of Thaksin....lolol. A typical western trait, make more out of the situation than what actually exists....lolol.
LakeGeneve
^You make some good points on the article KB but I think your ignoring some useful insights and you seem to be simplifying a range of diverse yet intersecting dynamics by emphasising that nearly everyhting is attributable to just Thaksin. Many informed Thai commentators have stated they believe that this has gone beyond just the machinations and influence of Thaksin. Even if he somehow disappeared this dynamic will not suddenly go away. I agree with that view. I don't think the govt really wants him to be returned to Thailand as it will only provide an intense focus on him, give him his matyr platform and a forum to push his views. I think he would love nothing better than to be back in Thailand incarcerated with thousands of supporters rallying outside. Also, whilst I agree there is a tendency to make some issues more complex than they need to be - not just by westerners but Thais also - it has to be acknowledged that there ARE complex issues and factors involved in this ongoing power struggle which has many layers to it. One of the problems for those overseas to understand what is going on has been the constant inability of many in the international press to give adequate insight into the range of complex political, socio-economic, financial self interest, cultural identity and succession issues involved in the larger picture. For example, the misnomer of the over used narrative of a 'classic class struggle' taking place has been both superficial and inaccurate though it patently is an element in what is going on. Interesting to compare the reporting in the domestic and international press today on the extension of the SOE is extended for another 3 months (lifted in 5 provinces).
