SweetieBabie
Hi So - No So. High-Society = Hi-So = äÎâ« Sometimes i find myself puzzled over the loosely use of this term by several people, must say that their understanding is slighting different off from one another, especially from mine. As i consider myself a chameleon, people i tend to hang out with are from the rags to the riches, although i am no Hi-So, but as long as social status don't come between friendships, it's fine by me. This include the royalty descended Hi-So (few),the Nouveau rich heirs, the wannabes, and the No-So. Most of the time is by choice and sometimes not. Against the odds i find that the genuine Hi-So are ones pleasant to hang with, and the Nouveau riches are the ones i feel contempt. The word 'Hi So' could also be used as in a term of slang as well. ?Hi-So? as in ?You look/are so Hi-So today.? = You are rather fancy today. But it don't actually mean they are actually one. What excludes from the real ?Hi-So? and the wannabes ? Do bank account V.S. social status relevant ? What is the the possession of certain characteristics of ?Hi-So? in your own definition ? and how would you define someone who is ?Hi-So wannabe? ? PeeMarc
i think this exists in just about every country, even though it may not have anything to do with royalty or royal blood. There is still a fair amount of 'class' struggle/structure in societies. For me, i come from a quite poor family history, and my parents worked extremely hard to raise us to middle class. I was well educated and taught well about manners and such. I was taught to "be able and comfortable to talk with Kings, but never to forget or deny the soil i come from." What i despite to most are people believe they are "better" than another simply because of their name, their school, their money or their privileges. "we all have to put our trousers on one leg at a time" my dad used to say. I agree with you that often the ones with real status, talent or fame are often quite humble, generous and nice people. But it is the "try-so" people who i always hate and feel like slapping in their face. The ones who are so desperate to be "higher" than others. trocks69
have no time to associate with anyone from a hi-so background. i came from poor people and have worked my ass of to get to where i am now. my friends come from all economic backgrounds the only thing i require from them is to be geniunely nice people with out airs or pretense. hi-so = waste of time/not worth the air they breath

digitalcat
I've met some... I think they fit your description exactly. The ones that are staus wanna bees are pleasant to be around... they constantly have to go to expensive places, buy overpriced things and brag about their hi-so life. On the other and I had a friend that the only reason I suspected was hi-so only because he went to a really expensive school. It wasn't until I got to his "house" (one of many as I found out later) that I realized how wealthy his family was.
Rob
When I use hi-so in quotation marks, as I did in a journal comment yesterday, it's meant sarcastically. Real hi-so, in my eye, are those who--by virtue of fame, fortune, physical beauty, and/or power--may or may not feel that the fame, etc. entitles them to a higher status than people they might see as being "less than" themselves. "Hi-so" or hi-so wannabe, in my eye, are those who try to put on an appearance of having one of the aforementioned factors for the purpose of claiming an entitlement of higher status, which they feel gives them the right to marginalize others according to personal whim. My work during the time I spent in New York put me in regular contact with many famous people who were at the pinnacle of success and many wannabes as well. In my experience, almost all of those who were already wealthy, successful, etc. were some of the nicest, most ordinary people to talk to. And the wannabes were generally ill-tempered, high-handed snobs. In the context of TF, the "hi-so" folks would be laughable except for the fact that they represent the antithesis of what the site is about. Their disingenuousness, ostentation, and marginalizing of some members is baffling, especially when one considers how unattractive some of them are. eagle
I see people all the time who have a real nice car nice cloths, a nice house and not a dime to their name. To some its just their life then some try to act like they are more then they are. I know that there is status in a car. Go from driving a small old beat up car and then get into an expensive sports car and you see the heads turn. Ah life.......
Crustyjuggler
Hi-So here seem a despicable selfish lot to be honest. With all that wealth and power they seldom pump anything back into the country, the greed is insatiable. I believe the gap between wealthy and poor is one of the largest in the world, 12x that of Japan. Although i doubt that's news to anyone. But never fear, foreign NGOs are here...... mopping up they **** the wealthy turn a blind eye to.

maidai
Hi So, so its about social status and/or wealth. I know some ppl of nobility/Royal blood who are not rich, but get respect everywhere they go, ppl bow their head to them. They are not necassary Hi Society but of High status. I know a lot of new money, but no one gives them respect, because money alone doesnt earn you respect. The Real Hi So i know are the most normal ppl one could ever meet, if you met them on the street, you would not even know their status. Most of the time its old money that displays class, vs the new money that flaunts their wealth. Thai society, I dont care if someone thinks they dont treat someone differently because of their social status, once a situation come before them, their cultural instincts kick in and they will find themselves showing a little more respect to those of high social status. Im not talking the new money, but old money or old family connections. my grandfather was someone of High Status, it carrys on even though much of his legacy is gone. For example, i can almost go anywhere in the US where there is a Thai family, and when they ask me who i am, my last name attracks their attention, you then find the older generation who are more fimiliar with certain families become a little more friendly towards you, because you no longer become an indivisual but someones grandson or son, while the younger generation has no connection to that past and treats you like anyone else. In Thailand, i know many families who will not let their child get married to just anyone, they have to come from certain families. Even someone who is rich, and self made, their family background is still not fit for some parents.
GoodKarma
People have the power to create their own happiness or to mold their destiny...well about the status thing...that is all in their mind. people on the inside will be looking out - wanting to get out people on the outside will be looking in - wanting to get inside 8) ............the smart person will look elsewhere.............

beej
Its such a petty over used boring term spouted by the poor to label the rich in a bad, mindless bland and unthinkably rubbish way that works strangely in both their favors. The rich already know what they are and like to be reminded, and the poor like to pain themselves with their troubled lives.
